Apple TV receives minor software update

Apple TV receives minor software update

Following the release of iOS 7.0.4 earlier today, Apple has also released an update for the Apple TV. There don't appear to any major additions or changes in this update, so it appears to be a minor, possibly bug fixing release.

Manually download the update on your Apple TV by navigating to Settings > General > Software Updates > Update Software. If you see anything new or if this fixes any bugs you were having, shout out in the comments below!

Apple TV receives minor software update

Thank you Apple I'm about to update it right after I watch this movie

It takes a lot of work to prepare updates and pushing them out for free seems to be an Apple trademark

You do realize that most other companies do free update not just Apple, originally they used to charge everyone to do updates back when the first iPhone 2g and 3 came out.

What? Apple never charged for any update. I've owned every iPhone... Never been charged a nickel for an upgrade.

I could upgrade yours though, if you'd like...

$29.99

You are right. Apple never charged for iOS updates for the iPhone. But they did charge for iOS updates for the iPod touch. (When it was still called iPhone OS, before iOS 4.0, which was the first free update for the iPod touch).

I thought the comment said "...originally they used to charge everyone to do updates back when the first iPhone 2g and 3 came out."

That, for some reason, had me assuming we were talking about iPhone updates.

My bad.

DarkMx2000's comment was about iPhones, Claude Gohier indicated a possible reason for confusion about whether Apple ever charged for updates. That was, Apple did charge for iPod updates originally, but never for iPhone updates.

Hopefully this update will work, as the last one failed for me three times! Fingers crossed.

My iMac is a 2008 model - No Airplay for this guy. The lack of available connection options restricts me from mirroring the screen too. I feel like Apple will one day bring this around, It's only a matter of time.
:D

One bug that it seems to have fixed, at least for me, was that the Apple TV in the Bedroom which uses Wi-Fi rather than ethernet cable wouldn't play anything from my purchased music after I signed up for Music Match (which I had done just to get rid of the Advertising on iRadio). Everything else worked but it would keep dropping the stream and saying that the connection to iTunes was lost.

It seems, at least for now, to have been fixed. Though I had resigned myself to using airplay and my iPhone or Mac to listen to the music in that part of the house instead.

I'm curious to see what the next big update for the Apple TV will look like. I'd imagine they would bring it's UI more in line with iOS 7. I would like to see them let you plug headphones into your iDevice and route the audio from your tv through the remote app so you can listen privately.

Never owned an Apple TV but not sure if it's too late in the game to make a purchase, I'd love to integrate it into my Apple ecosystem at home! Or should I hold out for the possibility of a full fledged TV next year?

Buy it, absolutely! It's only $99, and I use mine more than I use my TWCable box!! HBO-GO is exponentially better on AppleTV than the on-demand version on cable. Plus, Netflix, etc, etc.

Not to mention Airplay! I could go on and on... I honestly can't recommend it enough, if like me, you've got multiple iOS devices and a lot of music and movies, etc.

I have Apple TV. Had it for a few years now. Eventually it is going to be replaced w a roku. I don't hate Apple TV. But it is certainly lacking for content compared to roku, searching for anything in any app is cumbersome (though the same may be true for roku; I haven't used one yet). But I've yet to talk to a single person I know that has preferred Apple TV over roku after experience w them both.

I'm waiting on new hardware. I know the moment I buy the current one they'll update it. I don't need anything big to make me want to buy it, any sort of spec bump and I'll grab one.

I found where you can actually name each Apple TV device... I never noticed that before, but it doesn't mean it wasn't there!

My first generation AppleTV, unlike many computers and computer-like devices I've had over the years, has yet to suffer performance degradation with any software update. Kudos to the developers for a solid product.

Yeah I am super exited to get one and all of those features, plus airplay is so amazing! I already have a great TV so just the set top box Apple TV is what I want, just never know when they might dish out a spec bump.

I hope it fixes the bug that I have: AirPlay only works when it feels like it. I cannot find any rhyme or reason with it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's frustrating

Just updated. Apple TV crashed shortly after. Not sure if it was related. Working ok now.

The only visual difference I see is the removal of the "Apple Events" app. I think the previous update allowed for customizable subtitles, (found under Accessibility options).

I've been wanting an Apple TV. I have a Vivo smart tv, a Roku 2 XS and a Chromecast. Would anyone recommend the Apple TV still, or is there no good reason to need one with everything I already have?

It's only better if you have a jail broken Apple TV 2 and unlock its real potential! Once you do that, nothing compares!

I wish they would as more channels. I'm surprised ABC isn't there yet. Disney and ESPN are there. They are all part of the same family right?

I kept putting off buying an Apple TV but I think I will dive in this year. That of course will mean that a new one will be released!

I always wait a least a week to update to make sure the bug fixes don't break something else. We use our Apple TVs as our only source of programming so I read the reviews and comments before I update. Not so with my husband. He updated and crashed our 2nd Apple TV when version 6 came out a couple of months back. Thankfully, we got it back up. So I'll just read all these other fine people's comments first. Thanks guys.

I love Apple TV! I wish they would get serious about it and bring it to its full potential. It's a great product. I have a young daughter and Having her favorite movies at the touch of a button is priceless. I never have to worry about scratched DVDs again.

Anyone still have to manually update even after they've turned on Automatic Updates on the Apple TV? Not sure why it's the case for me. I come home hours or a day later and it still never pulls down the update on its own.

I really hope that the next gen Apple TV will have a full iOS so that more apps can be in it. It's come a long way since the first gen but if Apple is really wanting to get into the living room. It's got to be better.
Google still seems to be struggling at it.

Ugh. Still doesn't fix the PhotoStream bug, which is: The AppleTV (ver. 3) only seems to show the same random 247 photos from my 1000-photo collection currently streamed to every other iOS device without a problem. Also, my AppleTV randomly defaults back to the NatGeo wallpapers when it still shows my photo stream in the settings. These problems have been persistent for the past year...

Just added the most recent update today to my Apple TV and now the APPS and wording are now appearing off the screen, it seems that the screen has gotten larger. Is anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it?
