The 3rd generation Apple TV launched in March of 2012 and supports 1080p video. Thanks to a recent software update, it also now supported Bluetooth keyboards. Other than that, it's very similar to the 2nd Generation Apple TV, which launched in September of 2010 and supported only 720p video.

The tiny box packs a wallop, however, with easy HDMI connectivity for your living room LCD or Plasma HD TV, and super simple, rent-only access to the iTunes Store, streaming-only access to your home iTunes library, and Internet access to podcasts, YouTube, Netflix, and other "channels" including news and sports like MLB. With AirPlay you can also stream media and mirror the screen right from your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad!

I love my Apple TV, but what I'd love even more is a healthy dose of regional content on it. AirPlay is OK, but I see it more a means to an end in certain circumstances, not an integral part of my experience. When I'm relaxing watching TV, I don't want to have to reach for my iPhone or iPad, or even my Mac in order to put something on there to watch.

The Apple TV has been updated to software version 5.1.2, with fixes for a number of security bugs, but the big news in this update is the Hulu Plus app, Which has been completely redesigned.

Updated Apple TV taken apart, reveals tiny A5 system-on-a-chip

Earlier this year Apple updated the Apple TV with new internals. There was no press release and no public statement of any kind, just a slightly updated model trickling its way into inventory. Well, MacRumors got their hands on one, took it apart and found what looks to be an even smaller version of the Apple A5 system-on-a-chip. Eric Slivka reports:

Apple seeking new blood to lead ‘High Priority’ next gen Apple TV development

Apple has posted a recruitment ad on its own site for a Software Engineering Manager specifically for the Apple TV team. It appears that Apple may be getting ready to move the Apple TV from the hobby stage into a full blown can’t do without living room necessity. According to the ad, Apple is seeking someone to deliver the next generation features for Apple TV.

Earlier today a financial analyst "reported" that Apple would be holding an Apple TV SDK event sometime in March. We didn't link to it because financial analysts have a lousy track record when it comes to Apple predictions, and whomever they're writing for, it's not media and it's not customers, and I couldn't think of a timely enough way to poke fun at it. However, Jim Dalrymple of The Loop, who has an excellent track record on sorting accurate rumors from nonsensical rubbish, has weighed in.

HBO Go adds AirPlay support

HBO Go has been updated to version 2.0, bringing support for Apple's AirPlay feature to the app. HBO Go users can now stream video from any device running iOS 6 to any Apple TV that’s been updated to software version 5.1.1 or later.

A5 chip in AppleTV! Wow, just wow! My mid-2012 AppleTV is fast and reliable as it is. Why would it need anymore power than that??? (the billion dollar question)
