The argument for AirPlay as Apple's gaming console (and Apple TV SDK)

If there's an Apple TV software developer kit (SDK) at Apple - something they intend to release to the public, akin to the existing iPhone and iPad SDK - then it's currently sitting the winter out up on blocks in the Cupertino driveway. Long rumored, it hasn't been announced to date, and it's unclear exactly what form it would take if that ever changes. (Partnership only? Games and entertainment only?). What has been released by Apple, and continues to be improved in both iOS and OS X is AirPlay. It uses your existing Apple devices to power the apps, and your Apple TV to stream the results to your big screen TV. And soon, it'll work with MFi game controllers. Is that enough? Kyle Richter argues it may well be, and more:

Amazon didn't 'confirm' an Apple TV refresh in Germany, but it will let you have a cut price one in the UK!

There may well be an Apple TV refresh headed our way as part of the October 22 event in California, but an Amazon Germany listing didn't just confirm it. But, at least here in the UK, Amazon will sell you one right now at well below the regular £99 asking price! The story stems from a changed availability date on Amazon.de to October 23 in the listing for the current generation Apple TV. The current generation product, with current generation product specs.

What would you like to see in a next-gen Apple TV? [Poll]

What would you like to see in a next-gen Apple TV?

The Apple TV was last updated back in the spring of 2012, gaining support for 1080p video. Flash forward 18 months and a lot of people are asking if Apple is going to update it again this year, this month, at the October 22 event. So, we're asking - what would you want to see in a 3rd generation update?

4K video (2160p) is on the horizon, but there's not a lot of content for it yet, and not many people have the download speeds or bandwidth to really make use of it yet. H.265 could help there, but it still seems more like the future than the present. A FaceTime camera would be interesting for families and conference rooms alike, but could it be integrated in a manner that fits Apple's demands for function and form? More channels are always possible, including networks and more sports, including NFL. Apple has added channels without hardware updates in the past, however, and could easily do so again. A software developer kit (SDK) and an Apple TV App Store could be interesting, and would require new hardware, but it would interfere with Apple's existing channel partner program, and doesn't seem to be getting a lot of attention lately. Cable passthrough, DVR functionality, and other traditional TV technology seem not only plagued by regionalism, but smack of the past and not the future. And built-in Blu-Ray still seems a bag of hurt.

So what do you think? If Apple takes the Apple TV to version 3, what should the bullet points be? Vote up top and give me the details in the comments below!

Apple TV Software 6.0 update now available - again!

The Apple TV Software 6.0 update has once again been made available by Apple. To get it, go to Settings > General > Software update on your Apple TV. For those keeping track at home, Apple apparently pulled the original update after it caused installation issues for what seemed like a significant number of people. Sounds like they've been working hard to fix it since then, and this then is the fix.

How to fix a bricked or failed-to-update Apple TV by restoring with iTunes

If you own a 2nd or 3rd generation Apple TV and you've been experiencing problems with it or it just doesn't seem to do anything at all, you can restore it in iTunes in pretty much the same way you can any other iPhone, iPad, or iPod. Recently, Apple pulled the Apple TV 6.0 software update after reports of it bricking user's Apple TV's started trickling in. If that's something you went through, the only way to get it back in working order is to restore it using iTunes.

Here's how:

Apple TV Software 6.0 update goes missing, possibly pulled due to bricking issues

Last week Apple not only released iOS 7 for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, but also Software Update 6.0 for the Apple TV. For some people it went smoothly, those in the U.S. got iTunes Radio support, and those everywhere got support for Shared Photo Streams, and an AirPlay update that lets you play your content on other people's Apple TV's. For others, it was ruinous, bricked their Apple TV's and forced a generation completely unfamiliar with the process to find or buy a Micro-USB cable and connect to iTunes on their Windows or Mac PC and restore that way. Now the update appears to have been pulled.

Where's iTunes Extras for the Apple TV?

Back on September 9, 2009, Apple introduced iTunes Extras, an HTML5-based way for studios to include digital versions of director's commentary tracks, behind the scenes videos, and the other kinds of bonus material commonly found on DVD and Blu-Ray. The original OS X 10.4 Tiger-based Apple TV was updated to support iTunes Extras, and it's musical cousin, iTunes LP. Then, on September 1, 2010, Apple announced an all-new, all-streaming, all-iOS second generation Apple TV, and... iTunes Extras didn't survive the transition. Not only that, they didn't get added back with subsequent software updates. On March 7, 2012, Apple announced the third generation, 1080p Apple TV, and still no iTunes Extras. Now, some 4 years later, iTunes Extras on Apple TV are still MIA.
