Apple updates its iPad 2 Smart Covers, kills off the orange one

Apple has updated its iPad 2 line of Smart Covers, killing off the orange polyurethane version and replacing it with a much more tasteful dark gray version. It has also improved the other colors in the polyurethane range, which it claims are now more vibrant -- they all now come with a color matched microfiber lining too. The leather versions haven't been changed except with the addition of the color matched microfiber lining.

The Smart Covers are available in the Apple Store and are still priced at $39 for the Polyurethane model and $69 for the Leather version.

I bought one of these, and I got rid of it within 2 days. Doesn't provide any real protection for the ipad. Just a gimmick IMO. I got a real case that lets me protect it from real daily usage/wear an tear.

Definition of cover:
Noun: A thing that lies on, over, or around something, esp. in order to protect or conceal it.
Is it the "smart" part? Is it "too smart" to protect?

Ian Eberle says:

The main purpose of the Smart Cover is to unlock and lock the iPad, while protecting THE SCREEN. Apple assumes everyone is careful with their products.

Carioca says:

Apple assumes, heh? How nice of them, that must be why I have to use my iPhone 4 inside a case at all times.
Hehe, it's funny how people go out of their way to justify everything Apple does.

kingweb says:

They put it out as a replacement for the ipad 1 black case that was excellent. It is NOT a replacement. Apple makes great products, but they need a lesson in practical and real life usage with some of their devices/accessories. iPhone 4 as an example with the rediculous glass back. You can't use the phone in a normal way without having a case. Otherwise the glass will break. You can toss a blackberry on a bed or table. You cannot do that with any apple device. They are too concerned with looks, and not function.

Johaen8 says:

I've had my iPhone 4 since day one without a case. I toss it on the bed all the time. I've even dropped it from waste high a couple times. No cracks, no major scratches.

fastlane says:

I've never had my iPhone 4 in a case. Apple could put it in a box and sell it as brand new and nobody would know the difference. It's in mint condition. I don't treat my valuable possessions like a jackass.

Katapaltes says:

"Much more tasteful dark gray"? It's certainly more boring and more conservative, but not more tasteful.
