AT&T details iPhone 4 launch, subsidies, iPhone 3GS discounts

AT&T is getting into the iPhone 4 fun today by (hopefully!) clarifying where things stand from their pricing and availability point of view. Here's the timeline:

  • Monday, June 7 – 16GB 3GS and 32GB 3GS price drop
  • Tuesday, June 15 – iPhone 4 and new 3GS 8GB pre-order sales begin
  • Thursday, June 24 – iPhone 4 and new 8GB 3GS launch in all 2200+ AT&T stores, eComm (consumer and business)
  • Customers who purchased iPhone between May 7th and May 14th will have an extension through Sunday June 14th to receive Price Protection (get credit for price difference).
  • Customers who purchased iPhone between May 7th and May 21st will have an extension through June 21st to preorder iPhone 4 in an AT&T store.
  • Any existing iPhone customer eligible for an upgrade between today and the end of this year will be eligible for our best pricing for iPhone 4, $199 and $299, with a two year term commitment.
  • Customers can verify upgrade eligibility at or by dialing *639#. (ABS customers can dial *639# or visit the Premier site,
  • Our upgrade tools already reflects this new timeframe.

So how about it US TiPb faithful, will this help soften the blow of those new tiered, capped data rates?

Let's hope that Rogers follows suit!

what does this mean? "Customers who purchased iPhone between May 7th and May 21st will have an extension through June 21st to preorder iPhone 4 in an AT&T store."
family member just bought iphone 3gs last week. what can they do?

dloveprod says:

I think I might have to wait til Sept when i think they will allow me to upgrade for the 299 price again, I don't wanna do the 499

My dad bought a phone May 10th according to this: “Customers who purchased iPhone between May 7th and May 21st will have an extension through June 21st to preorder iPhone 4 in an AT&T store.” He can trade in for a 4g or get some money back?

ThisBrian says:

Dionte have you checked to make sure your eligible, I have had mine less than a year and it's eligible.

Art VanBuren says:

if youre upgrade date is September, then you DO qualify NOW !
ChrisJ, this means your family who bought the iPhone for a HIGHER price will qualify for a refund on the price difference .

icebike says:

It will soften the blow ONLY if the upgrade does not terminate my existing "unlimited" plan, which is the case according to prior reports.
I do not see these caps as remaining where they are, when Apple has to limit their one single MAJOR feature (FaceTime) to WiFi, no doubt due to these caps.

Joel says:

"to PREORDER iPhone 4 in an AT&T store."

Freiteez says:

my wife got hers 2/2009...i got mine 12/2008 im eligible for the upgrade but she

Art Deco says:

@Frieteez: She should be eligible for the upgrade since she'd otherwise be eligible in August of this year (Upgrade eligibility is 18 months, not the full 24-month contract). As I understand it, if you bought an iPhone at any time prior to June 30, 2009, you'll be eligible for a iPhone4 upgrade.

ChrisJ says:

i see ad on right for power mat. it will not work with ip4 will it? need new cases for phone?

Janey says:

I got an iPhone 3GS in November to replace an Android phone (I think Android sucks rocks) - I don't seem to qualify for an upgrade yet. But I can always sell the 3GS on craigslist and then I'll break even on the early upgrade price.

Joel says:

TO Freiteez
She should be i got my 7/2009 and I am eligible. as long as you bought 12/09 and back you should be eligible

omar says:

Maintenance is going on at this is probably for the Iphone 4 cant wait to get mine!

- wasn't it if a customer's contract is up in 2010 they are eligible to upgrade??? (not if the customer's eligibility date is in 2010?) - I'm eligible in October - my date has not moved... and my contract is up in late Feb 2011.

Sizzlechest69 says:

Does that mean that if we bought the iPhone 3GS on launch last year, we arren't eligible for the upgrade?

solu says:

I am getting one @599 without an upgrade and keep my Unlimited data plan. Jailbreak it and then use video chat over AT&T 3G.

Rob says:

Ahhhhh! WTF!!! My eligability is 1/15/2011! I missed it by 15 days! Att is going to get an earfull.

Dyvim says:

Upgrade date: Feb, 2011. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
But we're on a family plan- think I'll just use my wife's eligibility and have AT&T swap 'em. But that means going to the AT&T store instead of pre-ordering with for home delivery. Ewwwww...

dustinae says:

anyone else notice the att website is down?

ChrisJ says:

yes, att is down and so is cingular. they are adding my new phone to site. i buy tonight and rite full review, yes?

booby says:

I upgraded to the 3GS when it came out...pre-ordered for it. Does that mean I'm eligible? I can't wait for ATT to fix their site to find out.

Bryan says:

I got mine last June 23rd. Called the ugrade number today and they say I "may" be eligible 2/23/11. They say I can pay a discounted price plus $18 for an upgrade now. Anyone know exactly what this is about?

bergman says:

ATT said that we can keep our unlimited data plans. We will not be required to switch to one of the capped plans even upon upgrade. I think that they are in a hurry to get as many customers as possible "locked in" to 2 year contracts before an Apple Verizon deal is announced. I'm sensing that they have a limited window of exclusivity with the iPhone 4. I really prefer GSM for so many technical and practical reasons, but at least in my area Verizon is outspending ATT on network build out and upgrades.

Rothko says:

O2 have put on there Twitter feed something about an Early upgrade period tonight

Muero says:

What about multiple iPhones on a family plan? Both say they're upgrade-eligible, but does AT&T really let you get two subsidies on a single contract, or only one phone gets the subsidy?

johnzero says:

Delicious... try to get on the ATT wireless site, and you get this message...
"Due to a system upgrade the site is temporarily unavailable, please try again later. For immediate assistance please contact customer service at 1-800-331-0500."

Rich V. says:

Am I the only one that finds all this kinda odd? They let the upgrade clock slide 6 months, the pricing drops, the disconnect fees increase, and the data pricing gets tiered. Could it be that after Sept 2010 we will see a NEW CARRIER??????????

Chris says:

@Bryan Yes, you pay the discounted price+75+18

Chris says:

As you are a valued customer we can make an exception to offer you a substantial discount from the retail cost of the phone, which is equal to the standard 2 year discounted pricing + $75. This substantially discounted price also requires a two year contract renewal and an $18 upgrade processing fee which will be applied to your bill. To complete an exception upgrade, please contact customer service at 1-800-331-0500 or at 611 from your mobile phone. Please note that an exception upgrade is not available for an iPhone purchase.

matthew23 says:

I don't get why when I bought my phone on launch day last year (3GS) it says my upgade date is 2/20/11??? I thought everyone who bought one on launch day last year was eligible for the upgrade price???

matthew23 says:

whoops - I guess I am in the same boat as Bryan above. So does that mean, if I want to get the 32gb iPhone 4, my price will be $299+75+18=$392.00 (and I sign for 2 years)?

Matt says:

What about the No Commitment plan? How does that work. 599USD, No signing up, no activation at store, locked to AT&T?

Pete says:

I'm cancelling my ATT and get a new plan if I have to pay full price for the new iphone 4. Thank god I use Google voice. ATT can take iphone number back.

Joe says:

I just purchased an iphone 3gs on May 29th. Will I be able to trade it in for the iphone 4 or get a refund on the price difference?

OmariJames says:

i realized that I upgraded to the 3GS on someone else's line last year on launch date. I'm gonna use theirs to upgrade. IDK why my line isn't ready for the upgrade and I haven't used my line to upgrade since the 3G.

jared52 says:

Yeah, this is clear as mud. I got my 3GS mid-Dec 2009 and when I do the *639#, I get a message that ATT "can offer (me) an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee." Do I get the standard upgrade or the "early upgrade"?

Teddy says:

So if I read this right. If I bought an iPhone last week I can pre-order the iPhone 4G next Tuesday?

Dragonsoul says:

Does anyone knows how much u need to pay to reserve an iPhone 4? I understand if u pay it all would b a pre-order, but just to reserve one?

Chris says:

I just got off the phone with AT&T and as im talking to him he just got noticed of the Early Upgrade Fee, for the 16gb its $399 blah im just opening up a new line

John says:

@Rob mine is at 01/08/2011 .. Missed it by 8 days .. this sucks.

Dean says:

UGH! I just bought my phone May 1 this year. It sucks because I cannot get out of it at all. Just thinking that if I had waited a few more days I could get the newer iPhone :( Missed it by 7 days

Chris says:

@dead just pat the EFT LOL

Leon says:

I bought a 3GS on June 3rd this year from an AT&T store. Will I be able to upgrade? Thanks

StuarT says:

I got my iPhone 3GS May 9, 2010. I am talking it in for a return tomorrow, and then I will get the iPhone 4. Or am I elegible for this? Can I do my plan?

AlecF says:

is there a way we can find out what day we bought our iphone 3GS? because i think i bought mine before july 1st last year, but not exactly sure. because if i did i would be able to upgrade right? so i just want to see what day i bought it to see if i COULD upgrade

For the millionth time, if you have unlimited data you are never going to lose it, unless you change your plan to add tethering.
And to the people that just bought their 3G[S] 2 weeks or 2 days ago? What FN rock do you live under?? This phone has been talked about and pictures have been leaked for months now. Holy friggin crap!! Type in "New iPhone" before you pay $300 for a phone. Google is your friend

those it mean i could get the iphone 4 at 199 for the 16 g

Dan says:

lime = correct.
if you feel the need you can attempt to purchase a 3gs right now on the site and when you pick the plan it gives you the option to keep your unlimited plan or pick a new one.
people need to stop and read

Chadizze says:

So I bought 3GS on launch last year. I would LOVE to have the phone so I called AT&T. I did the whole checking upgrade date and all that. I got back a txt sayin I can upgrade but I wasn't sure what they meant, in detail. So I called and she told me I was eligible and would have to pay the $18 upgrade fee. But she didn't have pricing on the iPhone? What? That's the WHOLE reason I called! Too see what I woul have to pay to upgrade. I know the price of the phone but didn't know what they would charge. She told me to look at Apple website for the price. Really?

StuarT says:

@Lime there were rumors of the iPhone 4 being on Verizon, which seemed likely. That's why we bought it then.
