Audi confirmed as latest CarPlay partner for 2015 launch

Carplay

Audi has confirmed it will be adding support for Apple's CarPlay vehicle technology to some of its models, with plans for a launch sometime in 2015.

Audi says that the addition of CarPlay will happen thanks to "intensive dialog between the Audi development lab in Silicon Valley and Apple" and added that major features of CarPlay will be "integrated into the Audi Multi Media Interface." Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member for Technical Development at Audi, stated:

User friendliness and low distraction are important parameters for integrating these functions. Data security also plays a vital role. We are separating the vehicle-related functions from the infotainment features, thereby securing the data against unauthorized access. The customer has to give express consent for the use of data generated in the vehicle.

Audi joins Honda, Hyundai, Volvo, Mercedes Benz and Ferrari as supporters of CarPlay. Audi will also support the newly announced Android Auto technology from Google. What do you think of Audi jumping in with Apple on this venture?

There always has to be someone right.....

I can't wait for CarPlay to come to 3rd Party companies, like Alpine. I will jerk out the thing Toyota put in there as fast as I can get something with Car Play in it.

Hopefully more auto manufacturers will support all of these various platforms, including CarPlay & Android Auto...
A car will likely last much longer than any mobile device, and even within family & friend circles, there could always be people using different mobile technology, be it iOS, Android, or WP. Hopefully in time everyone will get to just plug in their phones without worrying about compatibility, etc.

I agree. Though from a car manufacturers perspective they may not. So far Android has 40 some odd car companies on board, how many does apple have?

I think customers of those other 19 cars. I also think Android auto looks better and is better because anyone can add Android Auto to their existing app by adding some code. In fact one app in google play store will be able to work on the watch, phone, tablet, car, and TV. That is pretty cool. I do think in the end it will be best for every car company to support both. There is no reason to force customers to choose a car that only works with their iPhone limiting what cars they can buy. You shouldn't have to switch to Android if you don't want to.
