I love my accessories, and while I don’t have as many cases as some of the ladies in our forums (you know who you are!), I have racked up quite a large collection of “stuff.” I’m going to begin my list of most used iPhone and iPad accessories with my favorite accessory that goes with everything, and then one for each of my treasured Apple gadgets.

Kinies Classic Single Strap Shoulder bag / Cross Body Messenger

A while back I went looking for a bag to carry everything I wanted to carry. Computer bags are too small, and I didn’t want a backpack. I finally found what I thought was perfect on Etsy. I bought the first bag in red and loved it. The Kinies Classic comes in a variety of colours and two sizes. After carefully checking the measurements, I bought the first bag in red and loved it – the mini. It was wonderful. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought that if the small red one was good, the large purple one would be better.

I can fit my MacBook Air, my iPad, my iPhone, my Kindle, my MiFi, a pair of headphones, a flip videocam, a 1 TB usb drive, a screwdriver, scissors, sync/charge cables and power adapters for everything, and a minimum of the other things that women normally carry in a purse – wallet, lip balm, hand sanitizer, and aspirin. I keep the Mac and iPad in the large center pocket, but pretty much everything else has its own pocket. Obviously, not something for men, but if you are a lady geek – can’t live without it. GelaSkin

As I’ve just explained, I carry my MacBook Air in my purse. While it is pretty safe in the center pocket of my bag, I wanted to make sure it wasn’t going to get banged up if I threw something else in there. So I got a custom GelaSkin for the cover. Not only does it give me awesome protection, but people always stop me to tell me how cool it is. (Incidentally, it is a design done on the iPhone using the Brushes app.)

X-Stand for iPad Tablet

It took me a minute to get used to using an iPad, but now that I am used to it, I always want it in sight and accessible. Nothing beats the XStand from Brookstone. It holds your iPad up just high enough and swivels 360 degrees around, as well as tilting flat, and even straight back. It comes with a shiny black or red base, and is as beautiful as it is functional. Because it sits up off the base, you can even keep it charging while it sits in the stand. You can also put it in the stand with a variety of cases. (Here’s my review if you want to know more.)

The Little Black Book for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S

I’ve been through a lot of cases for my iPhone, but despite the fact that I originally thought of the Little Black Book case as a novelty, I keep returning to it as my daily driver. It’s beautiful and protective. Pad and Quill has created a first class case with the Little Black Book – and at first glance, no one ever realizes it’s even an iPhone. (Here’s my review if you want to know more.)

It has taken me so long to write up my most used apps of 2011 because – how was I supposed to choose just five apps? However, I’ve managed to narrow it down. My first home screen page is dedicated to my most used apps. This list isn’t in any particular, so here we go!

1Password

I live and breathe this app 24/7. I can’t live without it. My entire life is stored within it. It’s way more than a password manager to me. 1Password has the best customer support and it’s a well designed, easy to use app.

Echofon Pro for Twitter

I love Twitter but trying to keep up with my timeline was killing me. It wasn’t bad when I was only using Twitter via my iPhone. Then I added my iMac to the mix and it got a tad bit more complicated. And, well, I was completely done for once I got an iPad. Echofon is my Twitter app of choice. Echofon had tweet syncing long before other apps and Tweet Marker. Tweet syncing is my number one priority when it comes to any Twitter client. But that’s not the only thing I love about Echofon. It’s a universal app and it’s inline photo/video preview is topnotch! It’s not the prettiest Twitter app but it is one of the most function. I’ll take function over pretty any day of the week. The Mac app is full of awesome too.

Downcast

Oh how I love this app! This is app is AMAZING! It doesn’t get the credit it deserves either. This app does so much. You can customize it as little or as much as you like because it has a TON of features and settings. I’m pretty hardcore when it comes to my podcasts because I’m subscribed to so many. I like to be as efficient as possible so I love how I have control over every feed individually. This app is universal and the iCloud syncing rocks.

iBooks

I still adore this app. The latest update has fixed everything I didn’t like when I made iBooks my Pick of the Week many months ago. ‘Nuff said!

Reeder

What can I say about this app that hasn’t already been said by Rene, Ally, Andrew, and Chris? So I’ll just say, “Ditto” but I’ll also say the Mac version rocks too.

If you look at my iPhone and iPad home screens, you see almost nothing in common. You might think they were owned by two different people. I use them very differently, so have different top apps for each. For the purpose of this year’s most-used apps list, I’m limiting myself to the overall top 5 in no particular order. (It’s enough I was able to limit to five!)

Holiday Alarm

Holiday Alarm is dependable enough to wake me every morning for school. It wakes me with the iPod tune of my choice – without my having to remember to make it the active app before going to bed at night. It’s programmable, so you don’t have to worry about being woken up on national holidays, and you can add in (or remove) additional holidays as fits your personal schedule. I love how I can set it once so that it will wake me early the 2nd weekend of every month for drill. Can’t ask for more.

Bejeweled Blitz

Bejewled has been my favorite game since the Palm days. It just gets better, and the latest update is just the Blitz version that pits you against your Facebook friends. A universal app, I play it more now on my iPad than iPhone, but haven’t removed it from my iPhone!

DataVault

Ever get to the bank to deposit a check, only to discover that not only do you not have a savings deposit slip, but don’t remember what your account number is? I hate to admit the number of times this has happened to me. Or the number of times I show up in someone’s classroom to fix their computer, to discover that the latest master password has slipped my remembery. I don’t worry about it with DataVault. It remembers everything for me, and syncs to both my Mac and Windows desktop. Did I mention that the next update will have iCloud support so that my iPad and iPhone will sync to each other automagically?

Flipboard

Flipboard was made for the iPad, and while I’m not crazy about it on the small screen of the iPhone, I now get 90% of my news from my Flipboard sources. It’s beautiful, it’s timely, and it’s always with me.

PhotoSync

I like having total control over my photos, whether they originated on my iPhone, or I loaded them to a computer from a digital SLR camera. PhotoSync gives me that control, and more. I can transfer photos and video from/to my iPhone, iPad, desktop easily and quickly. So much more than my Photo Stream!

Well, following up on our original iPad review, we asked a bunch of Smartphone Experts and TiPb editors and writers what they thought of iOS 4.2.1.

iOS 4.2 is a big deal. If you have been using 3.2 for iPad, then the new version updates your iPad with a bunch of new features that make it seem “new”. For starters, the multitasking we have gotten used to on iPhone is now available on iPad as part of the update. Multitasking has really improved my workflow. I do a lot of app switching from email to web, Evernote to Pages and more. Being able to almost instantaneously switch apps is a great productivity enhancer and goes along way towards making the iPad a producing device rather than a consuming one.

The other features such as Folders, AirPlay and AirPrint are very nice bonus items (especially folders), but for me, multitasking makes all the difference in the world on iPad.

There are some snafus like the 256MB sometimes hindering performance with apps, but I take it in stride as overall this is the best mobile OS to date.

I have an issue with the way Apple markets their products. It seems too overdrawn sometimes. Whether it’s the Beatles coming to iTunes being called a day we’ll never forget or iOS 4.2.1 being called a whole new magical iPad, it just sets expectations far too high and leads to disappointment when reality never quite matches up with the distortion field.

I do think iOS 4.2.1 for iPad is great. It increases functionality a lot. Since I already had iOS 4 on my iPhone I was happy to get it on my iPad but also frustrated it took so long to get it. I love multitasking, folders, the integrated inbox, but some of it still feels unfinished. I wish I could delete folders without having to take all the apps out first. I like that I can find in Safari pages but it’s annoying that only one instance of the search term is highlighted at a time, unlike desktop Safari which gets it right.

But overall they did a pretty good job with it.

iOS 4.2.1 has brought my iPad to a whole new level of awesomeness. After 4.0 dropped for the iPhone and iPod Touch, I found myself readily using those devices a lot more than my iPad. I’m now back to using my iPad a lot more under iOS 4.2.1. The biggest addition to me would be folders and multitasking. It was much needed and makes the user experience much more enjoyable. I got so used to folders on my iPhone 4 that scrolling through pages and pages of apps on the iPad became daunting. I also found myself double tapping my home button on the iPad expecting a multitasking tray to pop up. Every time it didn’t, I died a little inside. Now that it actually does, my iPad is becoming something I use on a daily basis again instead of something I was only picking up to browse the web casually and play full screen games.

I’m also extremely excited to try out AirPlay and AirPrint. An AppleTV is on my Christmas list and I’m currently looking at purchasing a new wireless printer as our printer died a month or so ago. I hadn’t gotten around to replacing it just yet but AirPrint has made me decide to jump to a wireless model. I’m sure AirPlay will be a feature we will implement quite often in our house. Overall, iOS 4.2.1 was just what the iPad needed to bridge the gap between people calling in a large iPod and it actually being a capable tablet. Hopefully we will see improvements to take the functionality even further on the 2nd iteration of the iPad.

While many folks are in love with the new Airplay features, it’s never been a concern for me. That said, I’m pleased as punch to finally have real folders on my iPad, as well as multitasking. Overall, some great additions to iOS can be found in 4.2.1 for iPad users but for me it’s still pretty much the same device as before. (nothing wrong with that) Just now, I can keep things better organized.

When I purchased my iPad on launch day several months ago I thought I was just buying it as a device to test out and use occasionally since it didn’t seem to really fit any need. My iPad is now my constant travel companion and serves in the role of hotel room surfing machine, portable television, airplane seat movie player, gaming machine, and universal ebook reader. I was looking forward to the advantages gained in the iOS 4.2 update and my iPad has turned into an even more useful device with the update.

I find the multitasking/task switching functionality to be a major bonus as I can now jump between Twitter, Safari, Mail, Angry Birds, and more effortlessly. I also had 5 pages of application shortcuts and LOVE having folders that have allowed me to reduce my main home screen to a single page with customized folders.

Many family members are considering the iPad as a Christmas present and some are even thinking of using it as their home computer with basic needs for email, web surfing, and photo viewing. I think the iOS 4.2 update makes this an even easier recommendation.

iOS 4.2.1 is the grand unification update, the software that brings iPhone, iPod touch, and for the first time, iPad all onto the same version number and at the same time. Yes, it’s the one firmware to rule them all.

While it wasn’t critical for Apple to get all devices on the same iOS build, it was increasingly critical to get iPad onto the 4.x branch with multitasking. And the other features. After iPhone 4 with iOS 4 came out iPad went from being magical to being strangely obsolete. It just couldn’t do what we expected it to do, what we’d learned from our iPhone or iPod touch to expect it to do.

My usage of iPad post-iPhone 4 actually went down considerably for that reason. When the first iOS 4.2 beta came out, however, it shot right back up. I’ll never know what would have happened if iOS 4 had come to iPad in June, whether iPhone 4 hardware alone would have wooed me away for a while but I doubt it. You just get used to double clicking the Home Button and looking at a unified inbox and it’s hard to go back.

Now I don’t have to. Now iOS doesn’t have to. Now we’re all moving forward again, in the same direction, hopefully in lock step for a long time to come.

Like I said in the walkthrough:

iOS 4.2 on iPad is a revelation. It’s the way iPad is meant to be. That’s not to say it’s perfect or has every feature on every geek’s wish list — it certainly doesn’t — but it has enough new functionality to make iPad much more valuable.

Like with iOS 4 on iPhone, multitasking and folders extend the existing UI in a way that gives power users what they need, but keeps casual users either grounded in familiar metaphor, and feature-phone types blissfully unaware it’s even there.

AirPrint addresses an important bit of functionality for home and business alike, and AirPlay has the potential to turn the TV video scene upside down.

Sure, non-obtrusive notifications, and glanceable, lock-screen widgets — and hey, AirEasyFileTransfer — would be grand, but iOS 5 beta is only [3] months or so away…

I’m not as “seasoned” as other users, but from my perspective I’d say same old same old. While folders definitely add to the organization of things, there not much there in my opinion that keeping apps on separate pages can’t accomplish. I suppose you could say I’m a “low level” iPad user, so I VERY rarely use multitasking and Airplay/print not at all. Multitasking is great for killing apps, but honestly doesn’t offer that much more for me in terms of how I use the device. I’m a simple guy so really just having things work is fine by me. I do like the folders and think they definitely help keep things more organized and where I need them, but I can totally live without them.

The ABC app for the iPad has come up with a nice little update for those of you who are into tracking elections as they are happening. It’s not always easy to keep track of who is winning in each race through television or radio but now with the ABC app for iPad it will not only make tracking the election easier and more mobile, but will allow you to run through what-if scenarios for the races.

The states will change in color to represent whether it has gone Republican or Democrat, and it tracks the Senate races as well as the House of Representatives. So now you can watch whatever you want to on election night as still follow your favorite political party or candidate and see how they are doing on an important night. Best of all is that this app is free and not only can you track your election results all in one place, you can also continue to watch your favorite ABC shows as well.

PizzaExpress, a UK-based pizzeria, is adding iPod/iPhone docks into some of their seating areas as part of their “next-gen” restaurant upgrade.

PizzaExpress has started the roll out in their restaurant in Richmond, London. They call their new dining concept “Living Lab”, inviting the british public to try out all the new features before a full roll out nationwide.

Included in the line of the new features, are new ‘parabolic booths’, which are domes hung from the ceiling that deflect background noises, so not only can you enjoy a peaceful conversation, but you can play your iPod/iPhone music undisturbed, while not disturbing anyone else.

Sprint CEO, Dan Hesse, says his company has seen an increase in the demand for their 3G and 4G Overdrive wireless hotspot devices since the launch of the iPad. He also noted that most iPads sold are the WiFi only model and they have become increasingly reliant upon devices such as their Overdrive to have connectivity on the go.

When the iPad launch back in April, Sprint released a 4G case that could not only carry the iPad but also had a pocket for their Overdrive wireless hotspot to allow users to be totally mobile anywhere they want.

Not only has Sprint targeted iPad users but they have also featured the iPhone in a commercial they used to show off the features of the Overdrive wireless hotspot and point out its speeds are up to 10 times faster than AT&T’s 3G speeds.

The iPad that has 3G capabilities is not compatible with Sprint’s network and Sprint is still seeing increased sales thanks to Apple’s immensely popular tablet. With the iPad being sold by Verizon now, will Apple also work out a deal to have Sprint carry the device? Are you using Sprint’s Overdrive device bundled with your WiFi only iPad? As for Mrs. Bush herself, she currently owns a Kindle, but hopes to get an iPad for her birthday.

Barron’s is reporting that OmniVision will supply the CMOS sensors for two cameras in the next generation iPad 2 — a 5MP camera on the back and a VGA quality camera on the front.

OmniVision (OVTI) will supply CMOS image sensors for a second-generation Apple (AAPL) iPad that will launch in the calendar first quarter of 2011

A second generation iPad 2 would most likely be introduced early 2011, perhaps in April like the original. With cameras would come FaceTime support. Now that Apple has opened up FaceTime to the iPod touch and Mac, we could be looking at a huge surge related to mobile video calling.

In addition, Barron’s went on to suggest that the iPhone could sell up to 23 million units within Q1 2011 based on build orders, and pointed to the increasingly likely Verizon iPhone selling over 6m units alone. This could make the 14.1 million iPhone units last quarter seem rather puny by comparison.

The IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker claims that Apple’s record Q3 this year was exactly what it needed to bypass RIM and take over the fourth spot on their list of global mobile phone vendors. Apple is currently still behind, Nokia, Samsung and LG according to a report from Business Wire. Apple has been a dominant force in mobile phones since the introduction of the original iPhone 3 years ago but has never been able to sneak into the top 5 list of global mobile phone vendors. Their arrival into the top 5 knocked out Sony Ericsson devices the first time since IDC started this survey back in 2004.

IDC senior research analyst had some interesting thoughts on this achievement by Apple:

The entrance of Apple to the top 5 vendor ranking underscores the increased importance of smartphones to the overall market. Moreover, the mobile phone makers that are delivering popular smartphone models are among the fastest growing firms.

Apple has clearly dominated in terms of growth year-over-year as well, shooting up just over 90% while the next closest competitor, RIM, grew just under 46%. Nokia and Samsung are still a considerable amount ahead of Apple as far as market share goes but LG is slowly declining which could allow for Apple to eventually slide into the number 3 position.

With Cydia currently not giving new users the ability to save their SHSH blobs it seemed like a good time to go over how to save your SHS blobs with an alternative, TinyUmbrella. An SHSH blob or ECID SHSH is basically a unique signature which is checked against Apple servers whenever you decide to restore the firmware on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Once a new firmware is released, Apple stops signing the older firmware, hence making it impossible to restore back to the older firmware from iTunes. So, YOU MUST SAVE YOUR SHSH WHILE APPLE IS CURRENTLY SIGNING THEM.

Now to “why is it important to save your SHSH blobs”: The creator of Cydia has setup a new server which basically mimics Apple’s verification server and can save your older signature (SHSH blob) so that you can downgrade or restore back to the older firmware. This is important because if you don’t have your SHSH blob saved, and accidently update to new firmware, you’ll loose your jailbreak and furthermore, you wont be able to downgrade back to older firmware to re-jailbreak your device.

Now while Cydia will probably once again start letting you save your SHSH blobs on the server automatically by using the “Make my life easier” button, a utility has been released which allows for both saving blobs on the server and locally and also for restoring older firmware via iTunes. You can also use TinyUmbrella to save your SHSH without being Jailbroken and for the currently signed firmware even if your iDevice is using a lower firmware. Instructions for saving your SHSH

1. Download and run TinyUmbrella and make sure your iDevice is detected.
2. Check “Advanced Options.”
3. Under “Device / Version,” select the firmware version you want to Save (You can only restore to versions that have SHSH saved).
4. Click on “Save my SHSH.”
5. Repeat to save other firmware hashes if you wish.
6. Now, click on “Display SHSHs.” It should listed all hashes you have saved on your computer for all your iDevices.

Instructions for restoring:

(Make sure you have saved your SHSH blob locally using method above. If not, repeat the method above for the firmware you wish to restore to.)

1. Backup iDevice in iTunes and then close iTunes.
2. Open TinyUmbrella and make sure you dont get any errors on startup or else you will need to make sure that port 80 is open and that your host file is not set to Read-Only.
3. Click on Start “TSS server,”
4. Download firmware you wish to restore to from here: iPhone/iPodTouch
5. Open Itunes and use the Shift/Option + Restore method to choose the firmware file you wish to restore to (Upgrade button cannot be used)
6. After your firmware is restored you might get a 1004 error. Not to worry, simply click “Kick Device out of Recovery” if you get it.
7. Restore Settings from Backup in iTunes and sync.

Apple has shown an increasing interest as of late in creating stainless steel devices that are more durable to everyday wear and tear, and have been experimenting with an external coating of nitride to make this possible.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has published information relating to Apple’s latest invention of a new application which they call “Nitriding Stainless Steel for Consumer Electronic Products.” This describes a cost-effective system that would include placing a layer of nitride on top of the stainless steel exterior to help it wear better over time. The application reads:

In addition to providing a durable, hard surface that is both scratch and impact resistant, the nitride layer allows for the natural surface color and texture of the underlying stainless steel to remain visible to the user. It is this natural surface color and texture of the stainless steel that adds to the aesthetically pleasing appearance of the consumer electronic product, thereby enhancing the user’s overall experience.

This concept would allow the look and feel of the stainless stell to be maintained while at the same time providing greater protection against scratches and other wear and tear that devices face on a day to day basis. It’s also desireable because it is non-magnetic and would be less likely to inhibit 3G wireless signals as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. We all know this is rather important after the infamous antennagate Apple faced with the release of the iPhone 4.

It looks like hackers have had their hands on the iOS 4.2 beta 3 for iPad long enough to jailbreak it. Last night, well-known iOS hacker @iH8sn0w tweeted a picture of an iPad running MobileTerminal, a jailbreak app giving the user full access to the terminal command line interface. From iH8sn0w:

Yay! iPad 4.2 b3 jailbroken — Weird that MobileTerminal runs in simulator

Going along with Apple’s normal beta schedule, it would seem they missed the beta 4 release window this past Tuesday. This could signal that Apple may skip beta 4 altogether and go straight to a GM build sometime next week. (Maybe that’s connected to the stealth developer summit Apple is rumored to be holding in Cupertino next week?)

So what does this all mean? Once Apple releases iOS 4.2 there will likely be a jailbreak available shortly (if not immediately). No need to worry about having to wait before you upgrade to if you’re a dedicated jailbreaker!

As previously announced, Verizon and AT&T have started selling the iPad today. AT&T is selling iPad Wi-Fi + 3G at the standard pricing for both device and data plan. Verizon is offering the wifi-only iPad bundled with their own Verizon MiFi, for more flexible, if less integrated 3G connectivity.

Once again, the bundle prices are:

• 16GB iPad and MiFi – $629.99
• 32GB iPad and MiFi – $729.99
• 64GB iPad and MiFi – $829.99

Data Prices (per/month):

• 1GB – $20
• 3GB – $35
• 5GB – $50

Since the AT&T iPad is pretty much what we’ve had all along, we’re more interested in asking if anyone will be opting instead for a Verizon iPad + MiFi this holiday season?

A new reports suggest that 54% of all video online is now HTML5 compatible (mostly H.264), which means it’s iPad, iPhone and iPod touch compatible as well. Here are some of the discoveries from MeFeedia:

• 54% of web video is now available for playback in HTML5, with H.264 being the dominant video format. Mobile is driving HTML5 video adoption. HTML5 video is the most common format for mobiles, including iPhone and iPad.
• Publishers and platforms now offer iframe embeds, allowing them to switch players dynamically depending on the access device.
• Alongside mobile growth, we expect that most video sites will follow this trend.

This is awesome news for iOS users, and signals a dramatic shift in online video playback from just 10% penetration in January of this year. Looking at the numbers a bit further, HTML5 video has more than doubled in numbers since May at just 26%, and further suggests a rapidly growing trend of major online outlets integrating HTML5 video into their sites.

Although Flash is still the dominant video playback method, could HTML5 video soon be overtaking Adobe in the streaming video space, and will it be driven mostly by iOS devices? Daring Fireball points to an interview between Robert Scoble and Starbucks CIO Stephen Gillett, where Starbucks chose to go HTML5 rather than Flash simply to support iOS devices.

Does knowing this make you miss Flash on the iPhone any less, or do you still want your Flash video and want it now?

In the past Cydia has given the option to “Make my life easier” which automatically saved SHSH blobs on the Cydia server, but since the release of limera1n and greenpois0n, this option has disappeared and your saved SHSH blobs are not shown on the Cydia front page. The Cydia server is still up and running, and any SHSH blob that you saved previously is still saved. Also TinyUmbrella, which uses the Cydia server, still works perfectly and should be used to make sure your 4.1 SHSH blobs have been saved.

My guess is that with the huge flood of jailbreaks and Cydia downloads during the past couple weeks, Saurik decided to turn this feature off for the time being in order to save bandwidth. Fear not, your blobs are still safe and this feature should return soon…

Building on yesterday’s story of Apple announcing they wouldn’t be releasing the white iPhone 4 until Spring 2011 comes new rumors that they’ve cancelled the phantom shade indefinitely, and will not be making it available whatsoever.  BGR reports:

According to a previous source of ours, we have been told that Apple in fact has no plans to release the white model iPhone 4.

With all of the mixed reports we’ve been seeing on the white iPhone lately, we don’t know what to believe anymore.  It’s possible that, due to the timeline and events played out so far, Apple may just wait until the iPhone 5 is released in summer 2011 before officially bringing the white iPhone to the table.

Apple has launched their online store for China, a streamlined store that includes the iPhone, iPod, iPad and Mac product lines. The store also includes free shipping, an option for custom engravings on your iPod or iPad, and it is also the only place online where you can currently grab the iPod Nano in the (PRODUCT RED) variant. From Apple COO Tim Cook:

We are thrilled to open our newest online store in China. With personalized engraving, configure-to-order options and free shipping on everything, the Apple Store is a great destination for our customers in China.

To top it off, Apple has made their App Store available in Simplified Chinese, making it easier for citizens of China to access the 300,000+ apps available for the iPhone and iPod touch (or at least as many of them as are offered in China).

Slowly but surely, Apple is extending their offerings throughout Asia, one of the biggest consumer electronic markets on the planet, and should have 25 more retail stores in China by the end of 2011.

MusicDog, a completely free music streaming app, is now available via Cydia. Version 1.3 only works on iOS 4.x. and features include:

• Multitasking support
• A growing library with over 100,000+ tracks that can be searched and bookmarked
• Album Art
• “What’s Hot” and “Recently Added” lists
• iPod and remote headset control

The app requires you to make an account by adding an email address and password before you are ready to go.

Apple has announced that the now seemingly mythical device known as the white iPhone 4 will not grace us with its presence until next spring. Apple spokesperson Trudy Muller:

We’re sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone yet again, but we’ve decided to delay its release until this Spring.

This just after we told you how Apple teased us all with promises of reserving a white iPhone 4 at your local retail store. Clearly this is not the first time the white iPhone 4 has been delayed, nor do we know if it will be the last.

Those of you still waiting for a white iPhone 4, will you keep waiting, get a black iPhone 4 instead, or just give up and see if a white iPhone 5 ever decides to grace us with its presence?

After rumors that Apple attempted to block Spotify from entering the US market, now there’s a suggestion they might just be negotiating with the Swedish-based streaming music startup over a possible acquisition. TechCrunch reports:

“Apple and Spotify are in on-again, off-again discussions about an acquisition, but at best it’s very early in the process. No firm price has been offered, no term sheet tabled. Still, it’s interesting that the two are talking.”

Now, it’s important to understand that these rumors are just that — rumors — and as such, you should be taking this with a massive data center-sized grain of salt. However it’s still rather interesting to hear that these two clashing companies have been in possible talks.

Apple purchased Lala late last year, a streaming music service similar to Spotify, and many were under the assumption that Apple might create an online iTunes music service with streaming and possibly subscriptions. Now Lala has closed and there’s still no iTunes.com in sight.

Last night Apple updated the Apple Store app for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and decided to tease us by including what looks to be white iPhone 4 reservations as part of the new functionality.

The caveat to this, however, is that not everyone is seeing the white iPhone 4 listed, and even if you do, when you try and reserve it you get a popup stating they are not taking reservations for that product at this time.

So given that it is still not available to be reserved but that Apple updated their app to include the white iPhone 4 does this mean we will be seeing them sooner rather than well…never?

Apple is now offering free iPad engravings, just in time for the holidays. Apple have always offered free ‘personalised’ iPod engravings, however, this marks the first time Apple have unveiled the same laser-engraving program for the iPad.

Like iPod engraving, the iPad engraving is available at no additional cost and you can add up to 2 lines of text. However, it will increase the shipping time by 1-3 days.

VLC has been updated as a universal app that now supports iPhone as well as iPad. The update is now available in the iTunes App Store and allows you to:

• Watch natively unsupported videos on your iPhone or iPad (WMV, AVI etc)
• Open natively unsupported video attachments from emails/internet
• Open natively unsupported videos from other apps, like Dropbox

VLC also allows you to sync your favourite videos to your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad without having the need to convert them.

It looks as if there’s yet another Phone.app security hole, this time in iOS 4.1 that allows someone to get around a passcode locked iPhone, gain access to the owner’s contact list, make calls and send emails to anyone in said contact list.  From MacStories:

“To reproduce the bug, make sure to have a passcode lock turned on and lock your device. In the lockscreen, tap on Emergency Call in the lower left corner. The issue will most-likely get patched by Apple in the 4.2 update coming later this month, but it’s not the first time the emergency call screen has been exploited. Both iOS 2.1 and iOS 2.0.2 suffered from passcode lock bugs. Hopefully Apple pays extra attention and really secures Phone.app this time.

The new Apple data center located in Maiden, North Carolina, is expected to begin its operations “any day now” according to local officials. Amidst Apple getting ready to begin production inside the massive 500,000 sq. ft. data center, rumors have been milling around the internet stating that Apple plans on doubling the size of its already massive data center.

A local realtor, Bill Wagenseller, posted an aerial video of Apple’s facility had these comments to share:

Though there has been no official announcement, I discovered that site work is being performed and it clearly appears that there may be some truth to the speculation.

This new data center is what many are saying will be the heart of Apple’s  new cloud-based services which will allow users to store files such as their iTunes libraries on Apples servers as to stream them to all their devices.

Earlier this morning it was outline how Hollywood stars and producers alike have been quick to adopt the Apple iPad to help with their day-to-day work.

J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, director and producers for shows like LOST, Fringe and the Cloverfield movie respectively, have specifically been using the iPad as a main assisting component when working with Transformers executive-producer Robert Orci last month while laying down the sequel to the last Star Trek movie.

“When you’re carrying a little TV around, you bring the power of imagery to places that you don’t normally have it,” Mr. Orci said in an interview.

In addition to big-time writers and producers using the iPad to help with their work, it looks like many actors — like Dana Delany who will be starring in “Body of Proof” on ABC — have been utilizing the iPad to help with things like rehearsals and script revisions. Heck, even the sound guys are getting in on the action.

“The iPad is the must-carry accessory on sound stages this season, visible behind the scenes of television and film shoots and in business meetings.”

With the amount of product placement for the iPad (2,438 appearances on TV in September alone) and attention from the likes of major Hollywood players mentioned above, how quickly could the iPad take over most day-to-day tasks at the workplace? UK supermarket chain Tesco, have reported that they are experimenting on a new shopping experience, using your iPhone and iPad. They are already trialling a “scan-as-you-shop” system, in a store in Romford, Essex using specially developed handheld scanners. These are used to scan your shopping as you walk around the store, and you can just simply check out at the cashier. Nick Lansley, head of Tesco’s research and development, said that these scanners are likely to roll out nationwide in early 2011. Lansley also added, that his team are looking into implementing similar technology into iPhones and iPads.

The R&D department set about deploying the same technology to an iPhone. We wanted to prove that we could do it without any real change to our checkout systems.

There are several wireless access points in the ceilings of Tesco stores, which staff already use for communication with each other. He explains that using these wireless access points, they can determine where the customer is located in store, which can then be used to navigate them to specific products, or show the user relevant offers in the isle they are currently in. Unfortunately, he added that reflections from certain things within the store, like metals and shelving, may disrupt these signals, however his R&D would look into resolving this.

Ever since the iOS 4.2 beta for iPad came out, some people have been a little upset about the hardware orientation lock being changed into an iPhone-like mute switch. There’s been talk (hope) of getting a settings option that would allow for the user to choose between orientation lock and mute, but now that’s been dashed by an email response purportedly from Apple’s top dog himself, Steve Jobs:

In IOS 4.2 for iPad is the switch on the side going to be the mute and not screen orientation lock from now on?

When Apple first announced the iPad, it was shown to have a hardware mute switch. Just before its release, Apple updated their spec page, relabeling it as an orientation lock. Now they’ve flipped the switch again and it looks like there’s no going back. Remember though you can still access the orientation lock just like on the iPhone and iPod touch by double-tapping the home button and then swiping to the right.

Apple shipped 20% more iPhones than RIM shipped Blackberrys during Q3 2010, according to Strategy Analytics. PC World got a look at the report and says:

With the shipments, Apple grabbed a 15.4 percent share of the market during the period, while RIM finished well behind with a 12.3 percent share. Top dog in the kennel, though, remains Nokia with 26.5 percent of the worldwide market.

With Apple adding global distribution channels all of the time, not mention the increased chances we might see a Verizon iPhone next year, could we soon be looking at even better numbers coming out of Cupertino? Could they ever overtake Nokia, the current top-dog in the mobile space?

With both Greenpois0n and PwnageTool 4.1 successfully jailbreaking the new Apple TV (2010), it didn’t take long for the first jailbreak app to be released: NitoTV.

NitoTV is still in the beta stages, but will soon bring media player capabilities, weather updates, and an RSS feed to your feed AppleTVs.

There is an endless list of apps that allow you to make video calls with your iPhone 4, and aside from Apple’s FaceTime, most of t hese are also compatible with the 3GS, but it can be quite awkward to video call without a front facing camera.

Korean company, PLAYMASS, have produced a new accessory that can solve the problem, iSeeU.

iSeeU clips onto your i Phone 3GS, and flips open to reveal a series of mirrors, that allow you make a video call using the rear facing camera. One neat thing about iSeeU is, you can easily swivel it off to the side to switch the cameras, so that you can still show your friend what the rear facing camera would normally see.

iSeeU is available in 5 colours, black, white, blue, pink and green, and comes with a stylish carry case, so you can easily store it away when you’re not using it.

AT&T has been quietly accumulating smartphone units to add to their war chest in anticipation of the iPhone being made available through Verizon in the near future. Bloomberg reports:

AT&T Inc., facing the possible loss of its hold on the iPhone, is adding handsets at an accelerating clip and retraining store staff to help reduce reliance on its top-selling smartphone during the holidays. AT&T clearly has tried to diversify themselves away from the iPhone, and that’s probably the right strategy since they’ve relied so heavily on the iPhone these past few years [...] this handset strategy could shelter them from some customer losses.”

AT&T has also been revamping many of their retail outlets and giving alternate smartphones to their staff in order to be less dependent on the iPhone in a post-exclusivity world. Is AT&T right to worry or just smart to prepare? Sound off in the comments below!

Back in April Apple launched their magical, revolutionary iPad and all this week TiPb’s been wondering just how well all that magic and revolution has held up some 6 months later. Rene has already shared his thoughts in an editorial and Chad and Georgia shared theirs during the last iPad live! podcast, but we wanted more.

Here’s our original iPad review. Follow on after the break to see how the TiPb writers and Smartphone Expert editors Dieter, Kevin, and Malatesta feel about their iPads… six months later.

Six months in, the iPad has basically filled in two niche uses for me. First and most important: the iPad is the perfect airplane / airport device. I have the 3G version, so I don’t feel beholden to the vagaries of airport WiFi before I get on the plane. While in-flight, I rarely find the environment good for getting actual work done, so the iPad is a perfect device for watching movies and some light reading. The second niche use is as an internet device when I’m puttering around the house. I still don’t feel I can effectively get ‘real’ work done (the browser isn’t up to my needs there), but it’s great for looking up random stuff and sneaking in a game or twenty of Strategery.

Could I live without the iPad? Absolutely. But I’d be hauling out my laptop, not my phone, to fill those gaps.

At first I thought the iPad would be a back-up device to my iPhone. I purchased the 16GB Wi-Fi only model at launch. Though, this worked, I longed to be able to access data anywhere on the device. Over time I have used it more and more, to the point that it is my main computing device. I have since sold my 16GB model and I upgraded to the 32GB 3G version. This device now competes me. Is it perfect? No. But it does what I need it to do very well. Do I still love my purchase? Yes. I love it more than ever.

It’s a larger version of phone more than a laptop, so if you want a laptop, get a laptop. iPad can’t replace that. If you want something easy to use, for pictures or surfing the web or games, get an iPad. For less tech-savvy parents, for children, it’s fabulous.

But it’s not perfect. I wish it didn’t need that ugly USB adapter for my camera. I wish I could just sync it directly with my iPhone. And I’m upset Apple is taking away my orientation lock in iOS 4.2. Plus, what’s with Mac getting FaceTime before the iPad?

That aside I still love it. Go get it.

At first it seemed like there weren’t a ton of apps that were made specifically for iPad but as that number grew, so did the amount of time I’ve spent with it. Adding multitasking may make me more apt to spend more time on the iPad than I do with my iPhone 4. After 4.0, my usage switched to being heavier on the iPhone 4. I’m looking forward to see what devs will do with multitasking on the iPad. I think it’ll only help people make the decision between an iPad and a netbook. 4.2 should add a lot of features people need and want.

Six months ago I did not think I would be purchasing an iPad because of the cost. I decided to get one at the last minute and do not regret it one bit. My MacBook has been playing the role of a desktop now and if I had the money, I would actually sell my MacBook, purchase an iMac, and use the iPad for my mobile computing. My biggest complaint about the iPad is that 6 months later, we are still waiting for iOS 4.0. This is unacceptable to me and I’m looking forward to multitasking and a unified inbox when it finally becomes available. Although I absolutely love my iPad, it is still clearly a 1.0 device in my eyes. I have high hopes for the next generation iPad and can’t wait to see what Apple announces for it.

Yes, I’m the world’s biggest BlackBerry addict, but that doesn’t mean I hate Apple. Truth be told, I probably own more Apple products than most of the hardcore Apple fan boys out there. When it comes to the iPhone, I’ve owned all of them — including the iPhone 4 — but honestly I have yet to really ever be enticed by any of them…. it’s a great consumer product, but for what I do 90% of the time when I have a phone in my hand (communication, critical apps, etc.) for me the BlackBerry simply gets it done quicker, and that’s what I want in a mobile device. I don’t use a phone to kill time, I use it to get sh!t done. But when it does come to killing time with media and games, which is that that other 10% for me, I really appreciate the iPhone as this is where it excels.

When the iPad came out, I picked one up in the USA long before it came to Canada. And it didn’t take me long to decide that for me, everything the iPhone can do the iPad does better. When I travel and have time to kill at the airport and on flights, it really is my best friend. The night before I leave town I always download a few movies and buy a few new games for the iPad. I really like iTunes – it’s one of the best things Apple has going for it (though if you own multiple devices it’s still a pain in the butt to move your content around between them). For the iPad It’s all about that big screen size – why would you want to squint playing Angry Birds on an iPhone when you can have it be nice and big on an iPad? Previously a Kindle user, my Kindle now collects dust too as I now use the iPad as my ebook reader (I use Amazon on the iPad though – not the iBook stuff). Whoever says e-ink is better for reading never grew up with computers – I have no issue reading on the iPad and I do like flipping pages with a touchscreen (I do still find the iPad is a little heavy though for reading when lying in bed – it’s bonked me on the head a few times now when I’ve fallen asleep with my arms outstretched).

The iPad isn’t perfect though. One of things I really wish for is multiple user management. The iPad is kind of like a coffee table book for me – I leave it lying around and it’s something for guests to play with or my niece or nephew when they visit. The fact I can’t set up a guest account on it has forced me to never really start using it as a work tool – I don’t put my email on it. I also own enough laptops that I would never send email on it anyways – time is money and I can type 110 words per minute on a real keyboard… so why would I want to do something slower on an iPad that I can do quicker on something else?

The lack of flash really sucks too. I know the web is quickly catching up and going html 5, but still… I wanted to buy an iPad for my girlfriend’s dad as a present. He doesn’t use a computer but I figured he’d like using the iPad. I showed him mine and he liked it. But the first 3 websites he wanted to check out (mainly the websites for magazines that he reads) had a lot of flash on them so didn’t even load. It turned him off immediately.

Things are getting exciting in the world of BlackBerry with the announcement of their first tablet, the BlackBerry PlayBook. I’m really excited to get my hands on this one. It’ll be interesting to see how I like it. For me, I’ve never really liked the iPhone because I’m so entrenched in BlackBerry – going away from that physical keyboard and the BlackBerry way of things things (fast!) has just always felt alien for me. But on the tablet front, the iPad is my home. It’s what I’m used to in a tablet device. So it’s going to be the PlayBook that will have to be fantastic to really impress me. Apple set the bar for tablets high, so we’ll just have to wait and see how it goes!

I pre-ordered the 32GB WiFi iPad and after six months of use I am still very happy with my purchase, yet I cannot wait until the next OS update with multi-tasking. As I am sure many iPad owners can relate to, I use my iPad while on the couch, sitting at the table, and in other situations where I just want to browse the Internet and I do not need to create content. As I look back at the last six months though, the number one usage for my iPad is as an ebook reader. I have books on Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and Kobo so it is great to have one device to access and read them all.

The Apple iPad is also a wonderful accessory for the airplane traveler. I have used it multiple times for watching movies and reading ebooks. A couple of times I have even left the laptop behind and traveled with the iPad and a Bluetooth keyboard.

The more I use it though, the more I want to see support for multi-tasking as I find myself jumping in and out of apps and games quite a bit. I understand an update is coming soon and think this will make my iPad even more useful.

Honestly, by TKN standards, I was a late adopter. 2 months after release and several jokes about how the iPad wasn’t magical nor revolutionary, I broke down and gave into my gadget obsession. While the pricing was absurd (like all things Apple) I am finding it to be an amazing device for leisure and work. Yes, we all know the benefits of the “toy” aspect, I mean, it has thousands of games, does gorgeous video and is a giant iPod. However, as an educator, I didn’t expect the device to come into handy in the classroom. To my surprise, I have been using it to access student records via web and Excel documents (including rosters, discipline and attendance); I’ve also been using the iPad to VPN into my Smartboard Mac Book to control the board / display when sitting in the back of the classroom with a student to show the rest of the class. This way, what appears to be a “one to one” coaching isn’t anymore and the rest of the students can benefit by just looking up and seeing the math problems with walk through. It was weird at first but the capacitive pen has really come into good use for instances like this. Overall, I feel less guilty for spending close to $800 dollars on this device knowing full well I can now play KenKen’s and use it as a teaching aid.

“It’s just a a big iPhone” is exactly right — size is the killer app. Almost immediately I stopped reading on my iPhone or MacBook. I began saving everything I came across to Instapaper so I could read it later on my iPad. (I would even close my MacBook and pick up my iPad just to read long articles, the experience was so much more enjoyable). Browsing the web is fantastic; disintermediating the keyboard and mouse of the traditional PC and touching the screen made for a far more immediate and intimate experience. So much so, in fact, that when Dieter and I wrote our iPad review we focused almost entirely on the experience of the device. Gaming also benefited from the big screen, igniting an ongoing debate in Chad’s heart as to whether the faster launch schedule of iPhone games can equal out the grandeur scale of iPad.

It’s not perfect. It can be heavy and unwieldy at times. When iPhone 4 and iOS 4 launched in June the combination of Retina Display, FaceTime, and especially multitasking and unified inbox had me reaching for my iPad less and less often. Some of that was surely “shiny new toy” syndrome. Some of it was hard limitations of iPad under iOS 3.2. iOS 4.2 for iPad is on the horizon, however, bringing everything iOS 4 brought to iPhone back in June but adding AirPrint for productivity and AirPlay for entertainment, and while the former was needed the second could just be killer.

iPad is Apple’s first generation mainstream computing appliance, the Apple I or Lisa, not the Apple II or iMac, and that means it’s certainly not for everyone, not yet and perhaps not ever. But it’s proven over time that it’s for me, maybe not “right” but “right now”. Apple hasn’t nailed the device yet — they might next time, or the time after — but they hammered it hard, harder than I initially thought, and developers have taken it even further.

My affair with the iPad has been a mixed one, at best. It all started with a little interest, even a hint of mockery when first announced (okay, more than a hint). But like most people, at one point intrigue crept in and then a sense of fascination, curiosity with a hint of disgust…at myself.

Being ensconced in the Microsoft world (though hardly any allegiance), my interest in Apple is mainly as opposition, though I certainly respect their design aesthetics and recent market prowess. It took me three trips to the Apple store before I committed to buy, so yes hesitation was with me at every step. That all seemed to come to end once I opened it up the box and turned it on–that smooth metal, shiny glass and eye candy of the OS–I immediately fell in like with the device. Over the next few weeks, while not a full convert, I did administer more praise than critique, perhaps surprising a few tech compatriots a long the way.

Fast forward six months and where am I? I’m probably back in the critique camp, though it’s not to say the iPad is a bad device–just not the device for me. What changed? A few things–the way I used the iPad, the strength of my Acer Aspire 1410 Notebook (had it before the iPad) and new or refreshed technologies like the Sprint EVO and new Amazon 6″ Kindle. First, my Asus just served me better for productivity. As a blogger, typing, searching, copying, pasting, linking, etc. are all just easier on my Asus than my iPad. You could even say I love my Acer–I really do. Likewise, although I can read Kindle books on the iPad, I’m just not a fan of reading on displays with a backlight (my eyes tire quickly, headaches ensue). In this regard, the Amazon Kindle is just amazing–e-Ink is truly a remarkable thing if you’re a heavy reader and although the iPad gets great battery life (still impressed by this), the Kindle can go weeks instead of hours. Between the $139 price tag on the Kindle, the battery life and the fact it only weighs 8oz, there’s just no comparison between the two for reading for my situation. (And yes, took my Kindle to the beach where it was awesome; never thought about taking the iPad).

And the Sprint EVO? Yes, as it turns out, having a device with a 480×800 4.3″ screen with 3G can serve wonders for checking email, twitter and websites (and being a Windows Phone fan, I expect the HTC HD7 to replace my EVO–hello Xbox + Zune). The iPad served as a great couch-companion for looking up things on IMDb, YouTube, or checking Twitter. But with the EVO, I can do all of that but faster. And its easier to handle too. As it turns out, my iPad still does serve a purpose: it’s great for watching movies, video podcasts and Netflix. In fact, I use it 90% of the time just for this function. With the great battery life and 10″ screen, it makes a good movie player at work (don’t ask). Is that worth $500? No, not really.

To conclude, though the iPad is a unique device, one which will have a strong presence and continued success in the market, for my needs it fell short: not good for productivity (a fellow blogger tried using his a the recent Microsoft NYC event–I killed him in publishing), it’s not a great eReader and it’s just not that fast for doing things. Sure, I have a 3lbs notebook to carry around (5.5hrs battery life), a Kindle and my EVO, but I’m now quite happy with those over the iPad–in fact I’m thrilled with all of them. Still, I do look forward to trying the new OS update and will see if that breathes new life into the device which at this point is more luxury than necessity.

It looks like US President Barack Obama will be meeting with Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs today. Business Insider reports:

“President Obama is flying to the Bay Area from Seattle this afternoon. He’s speaking at Google exec Marissa Mayer’s house in Palo Alto this evening. Before that, says a source familiar with the details, he will have a one-on-one meeting with Steve Jobs.”

We aren’t exactly sure what they’ll be discussing, but we have a sneaking suspicion that Obama might just have heard what Steve Jobs had to say on Apple’s most recent conference call and is now rethinking the Blackberry device he’s been using since he won the 2008 presidential election.

Perhaps The President will be reaching out to Jobs in order to see how viable the iPhone would be as an alternative — and given the number of apps now available in the App Store for his consumption, we don’t think it’ll be a very challenging pitch for Steve Jobs to manage.

Prominent iOS hacker and Chronic-Dev Team member p0sixninja has tweeted a picture of an Apple TV jailbroken via Greenpios0n.

“Credits go to @nitoTV, @dhowett, and @westbaer for the awesome AppleTV loader”

Previously, the Apple TV had already been jailbroken using the SHAtter exploit, but had absolutely no 3rd party app support. We aren’t sure of when this will be released, or if it’ll be as easy as the current Greenpois0n jailbreak for iPhone or iPad, but at least we know the effort is moving forward — and in a substantial way. Likewise, no information has been released on how 3rd party apps will be run, though the “inject method” shown in the picture is tantalizing to say the least.

However, we’re pretty sure that — given how quickly the team moves on this kind of thing — we’ll be seeing a release in the near future. Maybe with a planned release date announced in the interim, as they did with 10/10/10?

Grooveshark is an online music search engine and music streaming service which allows users to search for, stream, and upload music free of charge that can be played immediately or added to a playlist with the option to cache files for offline play.

In the past, an iPhone app was available on the iTunes App Store, but was quickly removed as it appeared to violate Apple’s iTunes Store Terms of Service. It has now returned on Cydia for free, however the app requires a VIP subscription ($3/month through Grooveshark). However, the app does allow for 50 free plays before the subscription service is required.

The good folks over at Nationwide Network Cellular (Hong Kong) have a brand new metal backing that replaces the standard black glass that comes on iPhone 4. If you tired of having to slap a case on hiding your brand new iPhone 4, if you tired of having to be extra careful when you put your iPhone 4 down, then they might just have your cure for a mere $12.99.

This new cover has a black bevel around the edges with a nice metallic finish insert. The camera lens and the camera flash lens are included and are pre-installed to make installation easy. Iain Dodsworth, CEO of TweetDeck, follows Andy Rubin with Twitter comments refuting what Steve Jobs had to say during Apple’s Q4 2010 earnings call:

Did we at any point say it was a nightmare developing on Android? Err nope, no we didn’t. It wasn’t.

This in response to Jobs’ statement that TweetDeck (he called it TwitterDeck) recently launched their Android app, and the “daunting challenge” of having to contend with 100 different versions of software on 244 different handsets.

Dodsworth added:

We only have 2 guys developing on Android TweetDeck so that shows how small an issue fragmentation is.

The flip-side of open source and multiple handset choice is fragmentation, there’s no denying it. We’ve heard from developers that it definitely is more challenging to code and sell Android apps than iOS apps, but Dodsworth’s point is that the difference is negligible. Any developers who work with both Android and iOS care to weigh in?

Is Apple currently in the “AP” field testing stage — the final stage before the product is to be released — for the much-anticipated and often rumored Verizon CDMA iPhone? One of BGR‘s sources seems to think so:

For starters, we have been told that iPhone model 3,2 — what everyone is assuming to be the Verizon (or at least CDMA-compatible) phone — just hit the “AP” testing stage. This is the very last stage before retail release; final hardware, almost final software. Here is the odd thing, though… the iPhone 3,2 unit, we have been exclusively told, contains a SIM card slot.

And that’s where it gets interesting, because pure CDMA devices do not have SIM card slots.

Could it be a “world phone” with both CDMA and GSM? Could it be using that new Qualcomm hybrid CDMA/GSM chipset that we previously assumed wouldn’t be coming until June next year? Or could it just be a new hardware revision of the existing GSM (read AT&T) iPhone? (Maybe with an antenna fix?)

Speaking of next June, BGR’s source also said the next-generation iPhone 5 was now in EVT, the engineering verification stage before the DVT phase. It seems like most of us (14.1 million at least) just got our iPhone 4, are things really moving this fast now?

Andy Rubin has responded on Twitter to Steve Jobs’ remarks about Android’s openness — how Google is using it as a smokescreen for fragmentation — made during the Apple Q4 2010 earnings call yesterday.

During the live call, where Apple announced their over-the-top results to shareholders (and everyone listening along on the web), Steve Jobs expounded on Apple’s integrated business model and software focus, and how that’s parlayed directly into the success of the iPhone and iPad. In markets that were previously considered slow-moving when it came to innovation, and not particularly user-friendly before Apple came along, Jobs singled Google out for requiring Android users to be their own systems integrators.

Does Rubin’s tweet, while a perfectly nerdy, open-source software response (the commands needed to view and compile Android’s code), really do much to counter that notion for the mainstream?

FaceTime over 3G was one of the most popular reasons to Jailbreak iPhone 4, yet with the rush to upgrade to iOS 4.1 now that both Limera1n and Greenpois0n Jailbreaks have been released, users quickly found out that it no longer worked.

Well, Kim Streich has quickly updated 3G Unresictor to fix this issue and bring back FaceTime over 3G. The app allows users to bypass some apps’ limitations by tricking them into thinking they are on WiFi, even though they are really on 3G or EDGE. Users can pick and choose which apps they want to 3G un-restrict individually.

If you haven’t picked up 3G Unrestrictor yet, it is $3.99 in the Cydia Store.

Qantas Airways Ltd. has announced they will soon be offering up iPads on its Jetstar flights to try and persuade customers to choose them over competing airlines in the Australia and Asian markets. After a successful trial period, customers will receive an iPad on domestic as well as long-haul Jetstar flights. A Jetstar spokesman said:

We’re in the final stages of putting in place what would be a broader roll out across the network. We’re in ongoing discussion with the manufacturer around a more integrated network proposition.”

In-flight entertainment is a whole new possibility revenue wise for Apple. It will also be interesting to see if other airlines jump on the bandwagon and also start offering Apple’s iPad to its customers, or whether competing airlines will turn to competing devices like the Android Galaxy Tab or BlackBerry Playbook will be considered instead?

The Cydia Store now has a great extension available for jailbroken iPhone and iPod touch called Fullscreen for Safari that allows for not only toggling Safari into fullscreen mode for completely unobstructed browsing, but also includes multi-touch gestures.

This package costs $1.49 and has functionality and options that will completely change the way you use Safari. You can do things like two finger swipe left/right to switch tabs, two-finger swipe up/down to either open a new tab or close the current tab respectively, and shake to toggle fulscreen mode. (I personally love this function.) To get into fullscreen mode, the developer has defaulted to using a three finger tap anywhere on a page, but I’ve reassigned that to bring up my bookmarks since I can just shake my iPhone to get it into fullscreen mode.

This Cydia extension is seriously sweet, and I would absolutely consider this a must-have for all iPhone and iPod touch jailbreakers (not yet available for iPad). You can follow the developer, @Yllier, on Twitter to keep informed of any updates.

A couple of interesting FaceTime tidbits this weekend as it looks like group video chats might be available in the future, but only on iPod touch in the Middle-East.

First up, while FaceTime is still missing from certain Middle-Eastern iPhone 4 carriers, it appears to be working fine on iPod touch (2010). So it’s not a government restriction, which just leaves the carriers asking for it to be removed, or Apple worrying about the carriers and pre-emptively removing it. This begs the question, just what’s going on?

Next up, Jailbreakers have struck again and found the following string in iOS firmware:

Apple already provides this functionality in iChat for Mac. If they bring FaceTime to Mac having the best of both worlds makes sense. Likewise, with Skype adding multiple video calls in their Windows version, this would appear the next step for Apple to take to try and get people to start using their product over Skype. Also with the iPad 2 coming next year with most likely a front facing camera, this would be a logical feature to throw in considering the large real estate on the iPad’s screen.

If you are jailbroken and have the knowledge in editing program strings feel free to try this out at your own risk. To enable it all you have to do is navigate to:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/IMCore.framework/imagent.app/PlugIns/FaceTime.imservice/ServiceProperties.plist and change the false value to true. If you try it out let us know how it works!

Noosy, an accessory maker based out of China, has posted an HDMI adapter for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on their website. This would allow iOS device owners to output 720p video directly to the HDMI inputs on their HDTVs, instead of using the $50 Apple component A/V cables.

What remains to be seen is how it will handle copy protected material, which requires HDCP and has been a source of considerable frustration for users of Apple’s VGA adapter. If they’re simply converting the analog component out to HDMI it shouldn’t be a problem. If they going for true digital signal, Hollywood might interfere.

They have yet to announce an availability date or pricing at this time but this sure looks to be an exciting new product. I for one will be ordering as soon as it is available! What about you?

It looks like Apple’s Steve Jobs and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg recently sat down over dinner to talk Ping. The LA Times reports:

Apparently Jobs invited Zuckerberg for dinner at his house to talk about Ping two weeks ago. That’s when a tipster spotted them on a stroll in Palo Alto.

A passerby also reportedly saw the two taking a quick stroll around the block afterwards. Hopefully they were able to smooth things over a bit, and we also suspect as much, as Facebook CTO Bret Taylor recently stated that he felt “very confident” Facebook and Apple should be able to work out their relationship related to the two social/music networking services.

Ping, which launched with the release of iTunes 10, was supposed to include Facebook integration to help the new service garner quicker traction. There was speculation that the two companies had discussed a partnership up to 18 months prior to the launch of Ping. But this relationship quickly fizzled after Facebook blocked Ping’s Facebook Connect feature shortly after the service was made available to iTunes users, and Apple quickly removed it.

So do think Apple and Facebook will come to terms with an agreement? And more importantly, do you think Google’s Eric Schmidt will be upset his last coffee date is now having dinner with his arch rival?

The New York Times has released a substantial update to their iPad newspaper reading app. The app — in a few words — is orders of magnitude better than the previous iPad offerings from NYTimes. Forbes reports:

“The New York Times has finally unveiled the iPad app everyone knew was coming, the one that gives readers full access to the entire paper. It replaces the “Editor’s Choice” app, a truncated offering that Apple boss Steve Jobs reportedly hated.”

Previously, The New York Times app for iPad was quite limited in functionality. However this new update adds not only polish, but also includes significant functionality extensions which should push mobile readership levels to new heights.

• Access the latest articles and photos of the day
• Customize the toolbar with your favorite sections of NYTimes.com
• Read anywhere. After synching, articles and photos are available when offline”

While the iPad is a great platform for both magazines and newspapers alike, up until recently most notable publishers haven’t really taken full advantage of Apple’s tablet for pushing content to their reader base. I suspect that — with a lot of the major players jumping on board with more innovative offerings similar to the NYTimes app — the newspaper business may be seeing some light at the end of the tunnel after all.

Rhapsody for iPhone and iPod touch has received a nice little upgrade. In case you are unfamiliar with the subscription based music service, it allows you to pay a monthly fee starting at $9.99 and you can download anything they have in their huge catalog of over 10 million songs. In their latest update they have included:

• Ability to download albums directly from the Music Guide and My Library. (Download individual tracks with the press-and-hold menu.)

• New Downloads tab with menus for Artists, Albums, Tracks, Playlists to find and manage your downloads

• Downloading screen to see the progress of current downloads, and reorder the download priority

• Performance enhancements, especially while downloads are in progress

• Bug fix: resume playback after receiving a phone call

This is a significant improvement over the ability to only download playlists as you can pick and choose what you would like to download. This also could enable you to finally get rid of your Rhapsody player if you have one and finally be down to one all-in-one device. The update is available now and is free in the store.

The iPhone 4 has been popping up all around the world recently, So we thought we’d bring you a round up of all the International iPhone news and rumours.

UK

The Apple Online Store UK has reduced the ‘dispatch time’ to two weeks instead of three. They’re also offering, 6 months interest free credit on a minimum order value of £450, which can include the iPhone 4, and any of the iPhone accessories.

Germany

As we reported, O2 and Vodafone will be adopting the iPhone 4 and 3GS in Germany, in the coming weeks. T-Mobile will lose its exclusivity, which it has had since 2007

US

After the countless rumours of a Verizon iPhone, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, have said that a CDMA Verizon iPhone will be coming early 2011.

Canada

Like the UK, Canada’s shipping time has been reduced to two weeks.

Kenya

Telkom Kenya (Orange Kenya) has retained their existing exclusivity deal with Apple, and have launched the iPhone 4 on their network.

India

According the the Wall Street Journal, Apple have been talking to Reliance Communications Ltd and Tata Teliservices Ltd to release a CDMA iPhone in India. It has been said that Tata have been in talks with Apple for four to five months.

The White iPhone 4 has been spotted in the hands of Stephen Fry at the T3 Gadget Awards 2010. According to T3, Fry was talking about the Windows Phone 7 launch that he had attended earlier that day. When he reached for the new Windows Phone 7 that Microsoft had given him, however, Fry inadvertently pulled out his White iPhone 4.

Fry proceeded to taunt the audience and claimed that it was “The only white iPhone 4 currently in Europe”.

With the white iPhone 4 still unavailable to order from Apple, people are speculating how Stephen got his hands on the device. Was it an aftermarket job or is he in possession of one of the ‘ready-to-go’ white iPhone units? If the latter, could we see the white iPhone 4 before the holiday season?

Wi-Fi Sync, a jailbreak app available in the Cydia Store for $9.99 which allows you to sync content to and from iTunes over a Wi-Fi network, will be getting an update in December allowing for wireless syncing functionality over your iPhone’s data connection. That’s right, soon you won’t even need to be connected to your home or office WiFi network in order to get your iTunes sync on, let alone being tethered to your Mac or PC via a sync cable! From MacStories:

“Today Hughes confirmed the announced feature set and gave us a release date: Wi-Fi Sync 2.0 is coming this December, and the iPod Touch 4th gen will also be supported. As you can see on the official website, over-the-air sync for iTunes is still there, which means no feature has been scraped during development.”

Back in May, we did a review on the initial release of Wi-Fi Sync which was followed up by a subsequent article outlining some of the issues that were tied to the desktop client, and how to go about further correcting those issues. It turned out that the desktop client was causing problems when restoring your iPhone, and also presented issues with the iTunes Backup feature. So if you’re planning on going out and grabbing this app now, I’d highly suggest taking a look at those posts first — or simply hold off altogether until the 2.0 update hits Cydia.

We’re hoping that these kinks will be smoothed over in the follow-up release of 2.0, as the current version 1.1 has its obvious pros and cons given the issues we’ve seen. MailTones, by Electric Pocket, has received a nice little update. In case you are unfamiliar with the app it enables iPhones users the ability to change your email tone and set different tones for emails. The newest updated is bundled with 60 more tones raning from discrete bells to more audible horns and buzzers as well as an enhanced overall look and feel with full retina support.

MailTones has been a nice little application for people who want the option to filter their incoming emails. It allows you to set filters to change the priority of an email based on who it was sent from. So for example you can set your boss or your spouse to a higher priority so as soon as the email hits you will get a notification with their special alert you chose and you can respond right away. If you set the filter to make someone less of a priority you know you can wait and get back with them at your earliest convenience. You can also set tones based on domain or by contacts. This would be handy for the professional users who want an easy way to tell if an email has come from someone in their office.

MailTones uses Apple’s Push Notification Service, and offers simple set-up from Gmail, MobileMe and any server which supports “forward a copy” forwarding of email. Costs $3.99.

VLC developers Applidium have announced that they have submitted an update to the existing iPad app that will make it universal and support the iPhone and iPod Touch. The update to VLC, the media player all our otherwise unsupported video files love, and that came to the iPad about a month ago, is now headed to the iPhone and iPod touch is currently being reviewed by Apple, and we should expect it in the AppStore any time soon.

There are few restrictions with this new version:

• It’s still not possible to use the hardware video decoder, so unfortunately in most cases 720p video still won’t play smoothly.
• Unfortunately, we couldn’t support older iPhones and iPods. You’ll need either an iPhone 3GS or an iPhone 4 (or a same-generation iPod). The reason is actually pretty simple : based on our tests, the older iPhones (3G and Edge) don’t have enough power to properly decode most movies.

But along with the restrictions, there are some new features as well:

• Playback should be smoother than the previous version. Indeed, we’ve enabled low-level assembly optimisations to use the ARMv7 core of the Apple A4 processor as efficiently as possible.
• We’re supporting a lot more video extensions. Also, as many of you requested, it’s also now possible to open attachments from Mail or Safari (or any other applications actually) in VLC!
• This update is expected soon, and will be FREE for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

T-Mobile has been the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in Germany since the first iPhone in 2007, however there is new evidence to show that T-Mobile may lose its exclusivity to O2 and Vodafone in the coming weeks.

• The O2 Germany website, has launched a ‘keep me informed’ page, that offers “the latest news and everything to know about the iPhone 4 on O2”

• The Vodafone website has launched a similar page that allows you to sign up and select which iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS you want to be notified about.

Both carriers are yet to announce any official pricing or release date, however one source at iPhone-Ticker.de has said that Vodafone will have iPhone 4’s starting Wednesday 27th October, with prices starting at €729 and as high as €849, off contract.

Rumoured contract prices start at €169,90 for the handset and €45 a month for the low-tier contract, to as high as €119,95 a month, with the handset at €1 for the higher-tier contract.

This marks the end of T-Mobile’s exclusivity in Germany, and sees them join the likes of the UK and Canada in the list of multiple-carrier countries. Unless and until Verizon iPhone (or Sprint or T-Mobile) rumors prove true, the US remains exclusive to AT&T.

So, any T-Mobile Germany iPhone users tempted to switch?

In their summer earnings call earlier this evening, Intel conceded that Apple’s iPad has eaten away at overall computer sales since the revolutionary tablet device was released in April. Electronista reports:

“There was “softness” in sales mainly in the US and Western Europe, both of which have been cornerstones of iPad sales. Executives said Apple’s tablet was likely taking away sales “at the margin” as customers without a large income often had to choose between one device or another.”

Over the past 6 months, some believe that as high as 13 percent of computer sales could have been lost to the iPad alone. This is an astounding number when you factor in how new the iPad is to the market — and further suggests that Apple has single-handily defined a new market genre with their quickly-adopted iPad.

During the same time, it appears that they’ve taken a significant chunk of sales from the largest consumer electronics device category in history. Additional comments from the article suggested that the iPad may have an easy time holding their ground through 2011, as there won’t be any form of concordant competition from any of the major players in the immediate future:

“Intel doesn’t plan to have truly thin and long-lived tablets until 2011 but expected to be competitive with Android, MeeGo and Windows tablets.”

Intel is assuming that these other players are going to just pick up market share with their initial offerings, and that they’ll be able to compete head-on with iPad. However, assumptions are never a good thing to make — especially in a market that’s dominated by a company as smart as Apple.

Earlier today, Chronic Dev Team member Joshua Hill (@p0sixninja) announced via twitter that they’ve released Greenpois0n, a jailbreak tool for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad running iOS 4.1. This falls behind their initial goal of pushing the jailbreak out on 10/10/10 at 10:10:10AM due to GeoHot releasing his Limera1n jailbreak first.

Previously based on the SHAtter exploit, Greenpois0n now uses the same bootrom USB exploit that GeoHot implemented in his own release late last week. They decided on using the same exploit as to not give Apple any heads up on how the SHAtter exploit was conducted, in order to ensure that Apple doesn’t quickly patch both exploits in a future iOS update.

You can grab Greenpois0n via greenpoison.com, but you may also want to visit their blog before attempting the jailbreak for more info and to make sure your iOS device is supported. As with the Limera1n exploit, this allows for jailbreaking the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch (3rd and 4th gen only) and the iPad. Additionally, they’ve announced that a future update will also include a jailbreak for the Apple TV (2010) and the 2nd generation iPod Touch.

On Sunday we told you that Yahoo! sent in their update to Apple for the Messenger app to allow for 3G video calling — well today the update is live in the iTunes App Store.

Not only will you now be able to better communicate with others Yahoo! Messenger users on iPhones but you will be able to chat with anyone who has a front facing camera on their phones. Even bigger news than that is the ability to video chat between a phone and the computer version of Yahoo! Messenger. This brings a whole new potential to having the iPhone 4 as well as any smartphone with a front facing camera.

Earlier this week the VP of Yahoo! Mobile in America, David Katz, let slip that Yahoo! will soon be supporting video chat on their mobile apps, including iPhone. A Yahoo Spokesperson has said that he believes:

the iPhone app has already been approved by Apple and that it would be would be available “soon.”

The advantage of Yahoo video calling as opposed to Apple’s built-in FaceTime is that the user will not only be able make video calls with iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4. but with Android devices, Mac and Windows PCs, and anything else Yahoo supports. Yahoo’s app will also not be restricted to just Wi-Fi like FaceTime, and will be able to be used via 3G/4G.

Apple used open standards to make FaceTime and has said they’re releasing FaceTime back as an open standard itself, but since it seems to be taking a while, are you interested in Yahoo! as a FaceTime alternative? Do you think Yahoo will do it right?

Looks like Geohot wants back with limera1n and back in on the Jailbreak scene. Just day after Chronic Dev Team and Comex announced the 10/10/10 release date of Greenpois0n, he has announced his own bootrom exploit, which he wants included in Greenpois0n, no doubt delaying it’s release… What will Chronic Dev Team do? According to the @chronicdevteam twitter account:

We are currently working the “situation” out. Don’t worry, you’ll still get the jailbreak in the end, nothing to be concerned about.

The story of Geohot is well known and his achievements in the iPhone hacking world are well documented…

Moments ago, prominent Chronic Dev Team member Joshua Hill (p0sixninja) announced via twitter that “Things have progressed to the point where we don’t expect anymore roadblocks. ETA for greenpois0n is 10/10/10 at 10:10:10AM.” This hotly anticipated Jailbreak should bring another large contingent into the Jailbreaking community as many new iPhone users who have not been able to jailbreak 4.0.2 and 4.1 will now be able to jailbreak their device.

While details of the jailbreak, such as whether it will be tethered or how it will be implemented have not been announced, that information will likely be given shortly… As a reminder, it is a good idea to save your SHSH blobs with TinyUmbrella if you have not already done so.

UPDATE: Greenpois0n is based on the SHAtter exploit which only works on 4th generation (2010) devices such as iPhone 4, iPad, and the iPod Touch 4. Older devices such as the iPhone 3GS will not be able to use Greenpois0n. Also if you wish to retain your ultrasn0w unlock, you will have to restore to a custom iPSW with baseband 01.59.00 and not the official apple 4.1 since baseband firmware CANNOT be downgraded.

Apple have silently changed the details of AirPrint support since the release of iOS 4.2 Beta 2 last week. Originally the AirPrint capability was listed by Apple as supporting the iPod touch 2nd Generation when it was announced back on the 15th September:

AirPrint will work with iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (second generation and later).

After the release of the latest iOS Beta the press release has now been changed to read:

AirPrint will work with iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (third generation and later).

So it looks like if you have an iPod touch 2nd Generation, printing will be out of reach for you. A bit sneaky to change a press release a few weeks later.

According to a couple of mobile industry executives, Adidas has pulled out of their $10 million deal with Apple to provide ads from the shoemaker under Apple’s iAd mobile advertising platform. This comes after Chanel, one of the companies included as a partner in the initial iAd launch, cancelled their own campaign. From Business Insider:

Adidas supposedly pulled its $10+ million ad campaign from the iAd program because Apple CEO Steve Jobs was being too much of a control freak. According to one industry exec, Adidas decided to cancel its iAds after Apple rejected its creative concept for the third time.

To top it off, while iAds has grabbed a lot of marketshare away from Google and Microsoft, some don’t believe the economics surrounding the validity of the iAd platform will ultimately pay off for Apple or its partners in the long run (or developers according to Crossforward).

• all annotations that you create or edit in GoodReader – notes, highlights, markups, and drawings >- are saved in a PDF file, so you will be able to see them later on a computer or in another copy of GoodReader on your colleague’s device
• all notes, highlights, markups, and drawings created outside GoodReader, and properly stored in a PDF file, can be viewed or edited in GoodReader
• types of annotations that you can create and edit in GoodReader: comments (“sticky notes”) with 7 different icons, text highlights, freehand drawings, lines, arrows, rectangles, ovals, text underlines, text deletion marks (strikeouts), text insertion marks, text replacement marks. You can freely adjust color of all of the above.

• certain not very large files were known to consistently crash GoodReader (as well as other PDF reader apps) for no apparent reason. This was the issue with iOS 3.x. We have resolved this issue. It shouldn’t be a problem now, even if you’re still on iOS 3.x (this one is for you, Linux Journal readers
• now we can hide PDF watermarks (adjustable option in settings) -> certain button images in place of PDF links that were not shown before, are now shown correctly

And some other nice things:

• you can now choose which minimum zoom ratio you prefer for PDF pages – “fit to screen” or “fit to width” (an option in settings)
• we have lifted the limitation for a size of files being extracted from PDF Portfolios. Now we’re able to extract files of any size. Just make sure that you have enough of free disk space!
• now when you copy a file to the same location as the original, a copy is created. Very handy if you want to annotate a PDF file, but also want to leave the original file unchanged.
• a workaround for the issue when WiFi was conflicting with Bluetooth (slow WiFi connection, occasional WiFi signal drops when Bluetooth switch is on, etc.) was finally found. Now there should be no conflict between WiFi and Bluetooth when working in GoodReader.

Using a publicly released version of the Apple TV iOS 4.1 firmware, the Dev-Team has decrypted its keys, the first step necessary to a Jailbreak, which could very well be on its way. That’s less than 24 hours after the iPod Touch 4G fell victim to the same SHAtter exploit.

UPDATE #1: It’s looking like SHAtter is going to be the gift that keeps on giving. Even though the new AppleTV isn’t yet in people’s homes, the firmware is available on Apple’s normal public distribution servers and SHAtter has been used to decrypt its keys!

Cydia apps? 1080p output? At this point anything seems possible.

A way to control the UI absent finger-on-screen multitouch would still have to be worked out for standard iOS apps to function, but getting Hulu, PC to AppleTV streaming for video formats like DIVx and MKV, and Mobile freakin’ Safari up there would all be excellent starting points.

Apple has already approved the official Google Voice App for the iPhone, according to a post over at TechCrunch:

We’ve gotten word that the official Google Voice application is on its way to the iPhone in the next few weeks. In fact, we’ve heard from a source close to Google that it’s already been approved — Google just needs to revamp the application to work with the iPhone 4 and iOS’s multitasking capabilities. If you’re a Google Voice user and you’re on an iPhone, this is great news.

Google last word on the matter was “no comment”, but could the app whose infamous non-approval launched an FCC investigation and kick-started a new era of less kind, less friendly Apple/Google relations finally make its way ito the App Store? This is not that big of a surprise given that a couple of third party applications have already been approved that work with Google Voice, namely GV Mobile + and GV Connect.

Keep an eye on the App Store as if the report is correct, it could appear anytime soon!

iPhone Dev Team has put @pod2g’s SHAtter exploit into actual use with it’s first application as a jailbreak tool on the iPod touch 4 [Video Below]. Right after Apple released iOS 4.1, Former Chronic Dev Team member pod2g announced his development of a low level bootrom exploit that would be difficult to patch via a software release.

Since then, both Chronic Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team have been hard at work to implement that exploit into a usable jailbreak tool. The next domino has fallen as they have been able to use this exploit via a beta version of their PwnageTool on the iPod Touch 4G.

Although PwnageTool was a useful first test of a full iPod 4G jailbreak via SHAtter, it’s really overkill compared to the faster tools being developed. Its main use in PwnageTool will be for those with iPhone4’s, to allow updates while preserving the baseband and ultrasn0w carrier unlock. In any event, this is another exciting time for iPhone and iPod touch users…the cat and mouse game continues!

While many wait impatiently for the next jailbreak tool to be released, this news is reassuring and will give us something to look forward to in the weeks ahead. How long until the iPhone 4 falls to the likes of the Dev Teams? Tell us what you think below…

Some Apple patents were made public this weekend giving possible hints at the the future of the iPad, include a landscape dock port and “smart-bezel”.

The first one shows a second 30-pin dock connector on the left side for landscape docking. I’m sure this will make the keyboard dock and bluetooth keyboards even easier to use with some apps.

The second patent is for something called “Smart Bezel” which isnt really described well but by the pictures it looks like you touch a part of the bezel and and you can assign that part to a particular action.

Neither of these are bold re-designs, but are they features you want to see in a refresh? Oh, and let us know if you think that’s a front-facing camera in the smart-bezel illustration after the break, or just the ambient light sensor…

The European Commission is calling off the investigation into Apple’s ban on cross-compilers after Apple reversed the policy. The EU also claims that the policy change was a direct result of their investigation.

“Apple’s response to our preliminary investigations shows that the Commission can use the competition rules to achieve swift results on the market with clear benefits for consumers, without the need to open formal proceedings,” Almunia said.

While the FTC/EU investigation is certainly one of the leading theories behind Apple’s new App Store policies and guidelines, others have suggested increased competition from Google’s Android, and a desire to have games in the App Store based on engines like Unity and Unreal.

So which theory is correct? Or was it a combination of factors that made Apple change their minds?

Target has announced it will indeed start carrying the iPad in its retail stores across the country starting October 3rd:

As a way to drive traffic to stores this holiday, Target also announced it would begin carrying six models of Apple Inc.’s iPad, starting $499, starting Oct. 3.

Target will be the largest retail chain to carry the iPad. Its shares rose $1.20, or 2.2 percent, to $54.97. The models include 16-, 32-, and 64-gigabyte versions of both the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models.

Customers who have a Target credit card will also be eligible for a 5 percent discount on the device, once the card launches on Oct. 17.

Chief executive Ivan Seidenberg told investors he hopes Apple will build a Verizon iPhone for their upcomming 4G LTE network. He said nothing about an iPhone being built for Verizon’s current CDMA network, however, so contrast that as you will against recent rumors of Apple building 3 million CDMA iPhones in December for an early 2011 launch.

“We don’t feel like we have an iPhone deficit. We would love to carry it when we get there, but we have to earn it,” Seidenberg said.

“I think 4G will accelerate the process, and any other decisions Apple makes would be fine with us,” he added. “Hopefully, at some point Apple will get with the program.”

Either way, it will be an interesting couple of months comming up. Verizon is currently the largest carrier in the US and they have promised 4G LTE in 30 NFL markets by the end of 2010. AT&T is also working on their 4G network with promises of a mid-2011 rollout.

A new patent recently filed by Apple lays out plans to unleash iPhones and iPads covered with sensors that could make buttons like Home and Sleep/Wake obsolete:

“For instance, holding an iPad-style tablet with one hand could trigger the slate to activate the sensors on the other side of the hardware, so that only the controlling hand can use them. Meanwhile on-screen controls could be shifted across accordingly. Smaller devices could… react to individual or chorded input from the fingers holding the handset; that would allow for single-handed use of an iPhone, for instance.”

Filed Tuesday, the patent states that sensors could be placed under a device’s touchscreen, or even within its casing. This means that instead of having a homescreen button to press, one would simply swipe their finger along the bottom of the device to get back to their home page. (Sounds like Palm devices, doesn’t it?)

Likewise, locking the device, or adjusting the volume, could use similar swipe related gestures in place of buttons. Apple’s abandonment of buttons would also lead to sleeker, smoother idevices that would definitely fit with the company’s reputation for creating ultra-modern, aesthetically pleasing products.

Rumors of Apple working on multitouch casings and bezels have been around for a while so while we never know if anything from the labs will ever make it into real, production devices, it does look like they’re still actively pursuing the idea.

Custom ringtone makers for the iPhone are the latest group of of apps to suddenly gain approval for the App Store. This correlates directly with Apple’s recent changes to their App Store policies, allowing 3rd party Google Voice apps and other apps that Apple had previously banned or rejected from their mobile app marketplace, or simply left in limbo. Techcrunch reports:

Since the early days of the App Store, applications that allow users to make ringtones from songs on their handsets have either inexplicably sat on hold or were outright denied. And yet, here we are; as of right now, there are no less than 5 different ringtone making apps sitting in the App Store.

Another segment of apps that Apple has confirmed does not directly compete with their own app and service offerings has been revealed. I wonder what types of apps we may see pop up next that weren’t previously allowed?

Google updated it’s Google Earth app for iPhone and iPad this morning, including Retina Display support and oceanic layer content that was previously unavailable to iOS users. With this new update, you can now zoom in below the surface of the ocean and view the deep trenches and geography of the ocean floor.

Taking a look at the underwater bathymetry on iPhone 4 Retina Display is, simply put, amazing, and a new experience for users on the go. You’ll have to see it for yourself to truly understand what I’m trying to relay in this post.

Google Earth is a free app on Apple’s App Store, and can be used with any iDevice.

When contacted Monday by Apple Insider, Google declined to comment on whether it would resubmit its native application, which Apple refused to accept into the App Store last year.

“We currently offer Google Voice mobile apps for Blackberry and Android, and we offer an HTML5 web app for the iPhone,” a Google spokesperson said. “We have nothing further to announce at this time.”

Just in case you missed the big headlines recently, Apple relaxed their strict App Store guidelines and now have been approving apps that were previously rejected for replicating the phones built in capabilities. Google Voice apps were just about the first ones back in action and making their presence known in the App Store over the weekend including GV Connect and GV Mobile +.
