Do you want a bigger iPhone?
http://polldaddy.com/polls/list-polls.php?popup=1&id=3763081&msg=created
Does the iPhone's 3.5-inch screen ever make you wish for something bigger? With 3.7-inch, 4-inch, and 4.3-inch devices all the rage on other platforms these days, do you want Apple to announce a larger form factor for iPhone 5?
At 960x640 they have the pixels to scale, even if it would reduce density to do so. If it wasn't Retina Display, but was Big Display, would that be better? A larger screen means it's easier to read, easier to tap buttons, but harder to fit in your pocket (or hand if you're dainty).
Tell us your preference in the poll above and give us the details in the comments below.

this is my BIGGEST COMPLAINT about the iPhone.
The reason I'm actively searching for an Android phone that could possibly replace my 3Gs.
Unfortunately, I have no faith that Jobs agrees at all on this issue. He seems to think Grandparents are too important a customer to possibly scare them aware from the device.
Back in the day, we used to carry around very large mobile phones that only made phone calls, and we loved them.
I'd like to see having the option of a 7" iPhone to use with a Bluetooth earpiece. That would rock.
But I won't hold my breath. :|
I don't want a bigger phone, just a bigger screen. I think they could squeeze a 4" screen into nearly the current size phone.
I agree 100% with Webvex, I wouldn't mind a larger screen but not if it makes the phone bigger. I held the EVO and compared to the iPhone it's kinda huge... I remember when cell phones were big and we wanted smaller, are we going full circle on that? Because it's not very often that you can get a larger screen without making the phone larger and a 7" phone (i hope fastlane was kidding)
No way. Screen size is great as is. Keep that ppi the same. Already borders on being too big.
I also want 16:9 iDevices so that "the best way to view your movies" doesn't involve cropping. Currently I abandoned my iPhone 3G for a Dell Streak for this and many other reasons. I'm not holding my breath.
@Greg Foster:
Uhhhh... no. Those big phones only made phone calls. Capisce?
I'm not a huge fan of the EVO's screen and the like. My 3.5 retina display actually feels bigger than my 3gs because I can hold it closer and see every detail. Bigger screen will always mean less battery life, more heat, less performance, more weight, and a bigger device.
If I could have maybe a 3.7'' or 4'' with the same size device, clarity, performance, battery life, and weight... then I'd consider it.
Physical size is awesome. Size of the screen... Well... Compare it with the htc evo.
why doesn't steve o do the obvious... 4+ inches AND bump up resolution.... duh
Yep. I want more screen, not a bigger phone. Put the home button on top of the phone next to the lock button.
Give me a 4 inch and I'm good that's the perfect size for me
I love the size of the iPhone. It's perfectly pocketable and easy to hold and type on. I used to love the size of my Nokia E71 and the iPhone 4 is just about the same exact size (in every dimension). I couldn't ask for a more perfectly sized device.
A 4.3" Retina Display iPhone 5 would rock !!!
No, I like it when my phone fits in my pocket.
You don't have to make a bigger iPhone you can just keep it the same size but expand the screen to where it's all black.
4" screen, but still have the retina display at the iPad's 1024x768 resolution instead of the iPhone 4's 960x640. That is what I want to see on iPhone 5.
Shouldn't be increased, it's find how it is.
Like Nate says I like it when my phone fits in my pocket.
I LOVE my 4.3" Droid X screen. Looking at my old iphone I probably will never go back to one that size.
How about a decent US carrier instead?
See, what he should have done was make the iPad work with cell carrier's voice calls, especially if there is going to be a 7" version released. Let it pair up with a bluetooh headset and be a "cellphone".
If I hated Apple and wasn't smart enough to own an iPad I'd want a bigger screen. Fortunately I have an iPad and want a phone with some style that fits in my pocket without having to re-sew my pants. I personally think most droids are at the edge of too big, but I understand why they have done it considering there wasn't much else to brag about. (overcompensation some call it) ;)
4.3 but I would settle for a 4. Actually even 3.7 just make it bigger.
I'll take a 4 inch screen please!
I'd really like to see an iPhone with a 9.7" screen that doesnt make phone calls.
So size does matter?
Phone size can be a dangerous thing. Not big enough, no sale. Too big, no sale. I believe that is a main issue with the pre. Screen size too small. I think the screen size on the iPhone could be increased without an obvious change in the iPhone outer case.
I'm so used to the 4.3 on my Evo that everything else seems too small. Fits in the pocket perfectly. 4 inch is as small as I could go. Sacrifice bezel for screen Steve, 3. 5 just doesn't cut it.
I don't care much about the screen size. I just want a timer for the camera app so I can take sexy pictures for my girlfriend when I get out of the shower!!!
Add a case as well and it would be enormous at 4" or more. I already get aches from holding the current phone for hours at a time. It's big enough I reckon.
@Bart
"Fortunately I have an iPad and want a phone with some style that fits in my pocket without having to re-sew my pants."
Does that mean your phone is a Pre? :P
You want a bigger phone? Great, GET AN IPAD.
The rest of us want an actual phone we can easily fit into our suit pocket and the iPhone is just right for it. I know some people don't work or carry a purse or wear baggy jeans with giant pockets or whatever, but the average person wants a pocketable phone and the EVO is just way too big.
@Arti:
Rene asked us what we wanted, not whether or not what we wanted was okay with Arti.
I guess you haven't heard... but the iPad doesn't have phone capabilities... and I didn't hear anyone suggest that the current iPhone models be discontinued, anyway.
But, thanks for telling all of us what to get that would meet with your approval.
Look at the size of the Droid Incredible...... About the same size as the iPhone with a 3.7 inch screen... I like the form factor of the iPhone, but a bigger screen with added pixels to keep the current pixel density would be nice... i think a 4 inch screen may drastically change the form factor..... Not something i'd be too interested in....
I just want my iPhone screen to be a tad bigger. Make it the same height screen, but extend the width to a 16:9 aspect ratio. That would be great, but piss off developers. Do the same for the iPad and the iPod Touch
Let me have a 4.5 in screen!
All I know is that over 60% say they want some kind of bigger screen. Steve knows where the money is.
If you want a bigger Iphone then buy an Ipad!!
Yep, I'd love it if the iPhone 5 was just about ALL screen on the front.. :-)
Funny, when it comes to mobile phones, it's the only time you hear guys say "mine is smaller than yours!"
Kick Butt
iPhone is a nice size. I'd be ok if it was a little bigger but I don't want that. I want what most people want and that's a bigger screen. Plenty of space for the screen to grow and still keep the phone the same size. Better for GUI and media. Yes please!
I think 4 inch screens will wind up being the sweet spot for mobile devices. Anything bigger becomes too big.
Me? No.
My parents and grandparents? HELL YES!
Their #1 complaint is having to squint at and/or grab reading glasses to use their gadgets.
One of the things that was tested last year is that they found the iPhone had one of the most accurate touchscreens, especially at the edges. I wonder if the extra .25 inches at the edge of the screen is to make touches more accurate so that fingers can slide to the edge.
I know you all want 3.7 or 4 inch screens but I'm not clear why. I admit I have better than 20/20 vision so someone help me understand. 3.5 has always been fine for me and I want a phone that fits nicely into my pocket...
...and my hand! Those of you who want a larger screen realize that for anything larger than 3.7 will make the handset bigger. Do you want that? I don't have small hands but the current size seems to fit my hand just right. I'd rather not increase the chance of me dropping it.
Yeah I wouldn't mind a 4 inch screen. I have small hands and a 4 inch Samsung Captivate fits just fine and feels comfortable to hold. Wih the Retina display and Ips, a 4 inch screen would make web browsing even better.
Oh god no! Please never do this. If you want a bigger screen go get one of those other stupid devices. I pray this never happens.
I agree just a little bit bigger you don't want a brick, that will hog all the battery. Pardon my ignorance but big screen mean bad battery life.......
the screen size they have now is good. maybe 4" would be nice for the next generation, but anything bigger than that, & it's not pocketable. however, with a bigger screen, you lose resolution. so i doubt they make a bigger screen, but who knows..
[btw, i love the 3.5" screen with the retina display, HD like clarity]
I love the iPhones display the way it is now. If it got any larger, I would prob think twice about buying one. All the other terrible android phones like the evo are to huge and wouldn't even fit In my pockets. The iPhone is the perfect size the way it is.
I've held the huge Android phone (EVO?) and its just too big.
That being said, I don't see why Apple can't do their magic and make the screen a tad bigger, keeping the current form and size.
People....go to your local Verizon store and try holding a Droid Incredible (3.7 inch) and then cross the street to an ATT store and hold a Samsung Captivate. Then compare both to your iPhone 3gs and 4 and tell me that they are "too big". I have owned every iPhone since the 3G and now the i4 is my everyday device. That being said, if you surf the web, read pdf's or eBooks, or work with and docs software, the larger screen real-estate does come in handy. I can just imagine a 3.7 or 4.0 IPS/Retina display - wow.
The iPhone would definitely be nice too have with a larger screen. I have read 25 books on my HD2 in the last few months because it is so easy on the large screen. I never was willing to read for long on the 3gs...though I have not tried on the iphone 4 yet.
Size is perfect now. I hate how huge the Evo and Droid X is.
I just want an iPhone that has all the features of an iPhone 4 that doesn't lose signal when you touch it =x
4.0 any day
I own a 3gs and a HD2 and have had extended hands on time with friends iPhone 4 so I believe I can be an objective voice. I agree with most here that the iPhone is an ideal size in one's hand but I should remind everyone that thickness is important in calculating feel. My HD2 is occasionally awkward to use one handed and I have average sized hands (I think. I can barely palm a basketball if its wet and tacky and you look away after a few seconds :) but in exchange I get easier to read font and easier to manipulate UI elements not to mention improved video experience. The retina display is indeed gorgeous but I prefer the look of web pages on the HD2 even though it is lower resolution. The reason is the lower resolution is much less noticable than the increased size so the net result is web pages are better in my opinion on the HD2. I also agree with most people that the iPhone is much more pocket friendly. Most peoples have bought into the marketing hype of "retina display" like it was Apple's goal in designing the iPhone 4. It was a happy byproduct of the simple math that if the screen resolution was going to be bumped up from 320X480 and the aspect ratio maintained then 480X960 was the obvious choice. There is no compelling reason to alter the resolution if the screen were made larger as that would further fragment iPhones. Basically, the best of all worlds would be to add no more than 1mm in each dimension and squeeze a 4.0" into nearly the same form factor. And add LTE 4G data of course :) The only reason not to is the marketing angle of retina display but that was based on 12" viewing distance. All Apple needs to do is claim that with the larger screen the typical viewing distance is 15" and voila, we still have a retina display. You see, marketing is very flexible.
Sent from my HD2.
My 3GS with a Speck case is a touch too big for my front pocket sometimes. And I can barely reach the opposing corners with my thumbs.
I'd like a bigger screen, but suspect it'll be harder to use and carry around.
If Apple does it, I think they'd have to ship a 3.5" and a 4" one, with the 4" one having more storage and battery and obviously more price.
You guys have to remember that the iPhone has a 3:2 aspect ratio screen. This aspect ratio will be wider and will have more screen area then Android aspect ratios at 16:9.6 or 16:9. Any iPhone at 3:2 and at screen sizes larger than 4" is likely going to be too big to handle one-handed for half of the population.
You people that are crying that 4"+ is too big for your hands/pockets, are you 10yrs or younger? Maybe little people?
I have a Samsung GS with 4" screen and it fits in my hands/pockets quite nicely, even in my jeans with the small pockets. This morning I had it in my pajama pocket and I can barely fit my hand in them.
My girlfriend has tiny little hands like most of you and she has no problem using it either.
An iPhone with the display and resolution of the i4 with a 4" screen would make you cream your jeans. Hope you get it next year, it'll be stunning and I promise you will love it and be on here bragging how much better it is than any Android. ;-)
I've seen an HTC Evo and it's too big. I like my iPhone's size.
I bigger screen would be nice, but knowing the way apple is, we problably won't see it next year.
@nottawhiner
Why are you on an iPhone only blog?
And your girlfriend doesn't have a problem with it? That's nice. What about her personal preference? I have no problem using the iPad, but use my iPhone more and prefer to use my iPhone for quick stuff.
So just because you have no problem with something doesn't mean that your preference is the same.
The Captivate is the SEXIEST phone in the market.
I have an EVO ... The screen is great. As far as functionality, it's the best. However, the Samsung Captivate.. looks a lot sexier.. Because the Captivate is 4in. They have room to have some sexy contours... while the EVO is just a rectangular shape..
4" is the PERFECT size.. I will probably stick with my 4.3 EVO successors.. but for the general public 4" is the best...
A bigger screen is always better for most things. I wish my MacBook Pro had a 23" screen like my desktop, too. But just as I chose the right size for a portable computer, I also have to be able to put the phone into my pocket. The phone is already about as big as it can be without starting to get uncomfortable (especially with a case on). Somewhere you have to draw the line that a phone is not a desktop monitor. I'm happy with the iPhone form factor. If they can eliminate the black border around the screen, great, but I don't want the phone to get bigger.
They should have two sizes. I would like a bigger size for surfing the web but I know my wife likes a small phone. I wouldn't want to give up a retina display for a larger screen though.
I currently own a 3GS and my wife has a 3G. I have played with the EVO, Incredible, Droid X and the Samsung Captivate. I have pretty large hands and I can type comfortable on my 3gs. I have read roughly 30 books this year on my IPhone and I am hoping that Apple does offer something a little larger next year. Right now I prefer the OS of the Iphone to the Android platform but the Samsung Captivates screen size is perfect for me. I will miss alot of the apps I have on my phone but I think I will make the switch based on the screen size + the google voice intergration. I am only holding off because my contract ends in Jan and I am hoping that we get some more info about the Iphone 5 before I take the leap to the dark side.
6 inches! - Phone should be the biggest thing that still fits in a pocket (even when biking). I have a 6 inch calculator that fits just fine. (which would make the display maybe 5.. 5.5 inches?) they'll have to try people's pockets and see how big they can go. oddly, the 4 inch phones don't fit as well as the 6 inch calculator, probably because of thickness.
the iPad on the other hand, should be the biggest thing that fits in a hand (which may or may not be bigger than what fits in pants) but definitely smaller than the current ipad, I cannot hold. (even though a paperback book is 9 inches diagonal in total, somehow the ipad is just much bigger)
smaller versions of them, could also be available for those who have small hands, and great eyesight.
I think 'biggest in pocket' is the direction we've been heading for several years now. so just go for it.. not incremental, just go to it now.
some may like the smaller iphone. I think most will appreciate the ease of viewing and surfing.. on a really big (but not so big you can't carry it) phone.
they probably need to make both.
I have an HD2 and it makes web browsing so much easier... Please, Apple release a phone with a similar sized screen and I would buy it tomorrow!!
It was not so long ago we all wanted the smallest phone.
But that time has changed because we don't just use them to call or text with it anymore.
A bigger screen for better brwosing or playing games or even to read books from it is what the public wants.
The art is to make it big enough to use it for a longer time and better browsing but small enough to fit in the pocket.
I myself would like the 4.3 inch because i feel like the 3.5 inch is just a bit to small.
The phone these days are more like multimedia platforms to control everything around us soon we are going to use them to pay for stuff and take our home to work and our work to home.
