What's new with Bluetooth in iPhone 3.0?
There were plenty of things we were hoping for with iPhone 3.0, but that list definitely included improved support for the many things we can do with Bluetooth. The list was as long as the feature list for Bluetooth itself and though Apple didn't get everything, they certainly got a lot. Here's the list of what you can (and can't) do with Bluetooth on iPhone 3.0:
- A2DP Stereo Bluetooth. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. And come this summer, your bluetooth stereo headphones and speakers will work with the iPhone 3G. Note, it will not work on the original iPhone 2G.
- Peer to Peer. This is a big one, folks, but it's a little strange. You can share files and talk to other apps over Bluetooth. This means you'll be able to do multiplayer games, for example, or 'beam' your contact card from one iPhone to another. Or heck, play a trombone duet. No pairing is required, either. Discovery of other iPhones happens with Apple's Bonjour ZeroConf autodiscovery protocols
- Control Accessories. In addition to the dock accessory control, you can now control Bluetooth accessories from within an app. The example from the event was a glucose meter, but the possibilities are honestly endless.
- Tops on my Bluetooth list: Bluetooth keyboard support. Technically, you will be able to do with with iPhone 3.0. The weird issue there, however, is that this keyboard support would have to happen on an app-by-app basis instead of happening device-wide. That, friends, is a bit of a bummer.
Biggest Bluetooth surprise of the event: confirmation that the 2nd Generation iPod Touch DOES have Bluetooth and they can 'unlock' it to reveal Bluetooth features.

Any word on voice dialing?
Bob
Does this mean we will be able to send images and music over Bluetooth to other phones? Please let the answer be yes!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8g8Y3zKuOs
see how to install bluetooth for transfering ringstones, images, music etc.
Will the lack of A2DP support on the 1st Generation iPhone impact its ability to talk to other iPhones over the new P2P feature?
..Or does this only effect audio transmission to headphones and speakers and such?
My wife doesn't really care about wireless headphones or speakers for her first generation iPhone, but would like to be able to play games with my 3G over P2P.
Does this mean the the Nike+ system (like Nike+iPod) will finally come to the iPhone?
What Bobdaye said--I really hope bluetooth voice-dialing didn't get left out. I miss it. A lot.
Yay. i can finally get the Plantronics Voyager 855 Stereo Bluetooth Headset I wanted last summer !
But I'm not understanding the BT Keyboard situation. So I will needa app to beable to use my BT keyboard with the phone ?
Snoozers...
"So I will needa app to beable to use my BT keyboard with the phone ?"
only apps specifically designed to work with your BT keyboard will work. your BT keyboard will not work with mail, messaging, in the browser or with any other app that hasn't been specifically coded to understand the inputs from your keyboard.
I wonder if there will be an app now for using the iPhone to control my PS3? How cool would that be?
Striatic : thank you ! It would be great for them to impliment that in their native apps. However , I don't think they would put time into creating something not everyone would be able to use.
"You can share files ... over Bluetooth." Uhh... I read (haven't watched recording yet) in one liveblog that when questioned about file transfer in 3.0 the bobbleheads seemed stumped. So... not sure this is really in there. Sure, /Bluetooth/ can do this... but can iPhone OS 3.0? Not clear.
The lack of A2DP support for the original iPhone made this entire presentation SUCK. I can do copy and paste with TWO jailbreak apps. I can do voice recording with several regular AND jailbreak apps. I have been waiting patiently for A2DP, and this is what I get for my patience? Ridiculous. If a 3rd party app made my Treo 650 A2DP-capable, then it is BULLS&&& that Apple can't do the same here.
I echo josh's question: Can we send stuff like pictures to other non-iPhones over Bluetooth?
AS FAR AS I KNOW WHAT THEY SAID AT THE PRESENTATION OF STEREO BLUETOOTH NOT WORKING ON THE FIRST GEN IPHONE IS A BIG FAT LIE TO OUR FACES. BOTH THE IPHONE 3G AND FIRST GEN IPHONE HAVE BLUETOOTH 2.0+EDR (ENHANCED DATA RATE)I JUST HOPE THAT A HACK WILL BE RELEASED TO ENABLE STEREO BLUETOOTH ON THE FIRST GEN.
Lets hope the iBluetooth team get their app fully functional for the first gen, at least I can send/receive pictures with it. How can Apple exclude us first gen users?
Can we send files like music and images to phones such as blackberry ,Sony or nokia ??
//fingers crossed
Man I really think Apple crippled the OG iphone to put pressure on the owners to upgrade. As the Bluetooth chip
is the same in both phones. In order to upgrade just to use the A2DP Stereo bluetooth feature, I would not only have to pay $200 to upgrade my hardware to 3g. BUT, Also have to agree to a more expensive contraqct which does not include text messaging. So I have to buy a new phone, pay about $30 a month more, PLUS pay extra for texting, just to cut the wire on my headphones, for a feature that should have been there from the beginning. I am VERY upset APPLE !
Completely agree with all the folks sad for OG iPhone STILL not bein provided A2DP when its very much present.... APPLE's a big BIG BIGG gambler.....
Proven always... makin us sad :(
New to Iphone.. About to order 3g 8MB phone.. Is there a voice dialing app that I can use that will work with a plantronics 510 bluetooth headset.
thanks
AHHHHH!!! Finally!!! I'm so excited about the stereo bluetooth!! I love music and now im going to love it even more without the big flopping cord!! You'd think the apple people would have these obvious problems taken care of the first time (atleast on the 2g phone). There is a god!!
A2DP is great, but is AVRCP also enabled? Having bluetooth headset, but then still need to fish out iPhone to skip ahead / back or pause would be still a little sucky.
I have a Plantronics 855 head set Bluetooth and iphone 3G. I was not able to listen the music through the Bluetooth. Could any one help me with steps I need to follow to make it work? .
I have a problem, when i conect my iphone3G with my BMW anybody can not hear me good. With nokia i don't have that problem.
It would be kool if that now means we can send and recieve pics, vids and contacts via Bluetooth. Also... "gaber" what's a jailbreak app, and a treo 650??
Hey @Omari James I can confirm that the Plantronics Voyager 855 works great on iPhone 3G. Mute button on the headset pauses/resumes the track; volume control is only via headset volume control. no on-screen volume controls on the iPhone are available; the hard volume buttons on the iPhone have no effect.
@Mouli: step 1: Wait for general release of iPhone OS 3.0 later this summer.
Step 2 - well, do step 1 first and see if you have any questions. :-)
Hey there
I can confirm that Stereo Bluetooth / A2DP is working perfectly in iPhone 3.0, finally, after all the waiting! I have blogged about setting it up, with screenshots.
Well I just downloaded 3.0 and it instantly DC'd my motorola bluetooth, and will not recognize it. I should have known not to download this update before all the bugs got fixed. Since nobody else has said anything about problems with 3.0, let me be the first: IT BUGS YOUR BLUETOOTH AND YOU CANT RECONNECT.
Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but I was hoping the new 3.0 OS would enable my TomTom Go 720 to establish a BT data link via my iPhone. Should this be possible? It will still only do handsfree.
does anyone know if the new iphone update today works with ANY A2DP enabled headset or do i have to wait for Apple to come out with their own headset?
I can confirm that the 3.0 software does not support the next, previous, track
functions in the stereo bluetooth .A2DP is great, but the AVRCP is not enabled ? We still have
to fish out iPhone to skip ahead / back or pause .Why dosen't Apple
get it right. I still can't get an answer from Apple Support regarding voice dial over Bluetooth.
I have called support three times.
Hey, i jsut got the update for my 3G to 3.0 but some of the funtions dont WORK!!!!
lIKE MMS and tathering
Ben - if you are on AT&T the MMS and tethering are enabled in the new OS but we still have to wait for AT&T to enable on their part. On Apple's site is states that MMS on AT&T will be available "later" in the summer, and as far as tethering ... I think AT&T is hoping to charge an extra fee for the capability. Maybe it will be free, but its not available yet :(
just to add on to JayBostons remark above,
its some bullsh*t that AT&T is not allowing the MMS till August and tethering might not be aloud at all. seems to me that AT&T is not making the best decisions with Apple now have signed with Verizon. i would think they should be getting everything offered that apple is making available for the iphone to keep customers here instead of going to Verizon when they get their iphones next year.
I will say I'm disappointed in the A2DP with 3.0. I have Motorola H820 headphones and previously used with my blackjack phone. The audio quality was excellent (cd quality, no fuzz). With the iphone 3g the audio quality is lacking... I got some fuzz in the signal. Also, as others have stated no track advance/previous track/volume control from the headset. So, I have some H820 to put on ebay, thanks apple for doing the minimum amount of work possible to get people to shut up...
I was sooo looking forward to A2DP in 3.0 but disappointed to find that it will not pair with the InPhase car radio I have - despite the fact that it DID pair when running 2.2.1.
Grrrrrrr!!!!
Does anyone know if the Sony ericsson Bluetooth watch will work with iPhone 3.0? I've had my eye on one for a while now.
Is anyone else having trouble playing music through their ipod (on the iphone 3g w/ 3.0) onto your car stereo via bluetooth? I have an '08 Audi A4 with factory bluetooth installed (which comes through the speakers), and when I am connected to it, I do not have an option in in the ipod app (the little bluetooth button at the bottom right) to switch the audio source to the bluetooth. Am I missing something here? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated...
I too do not have the icon in the bottom corner with any option to change the audio source for the ipod on my iphone. However, my phone works via bluetooth in my car. I've updated to OS 3 and am not sure what I'm doing wrong. . .
My First generation iPhone does not give me the option for the Bluetooth source on the iPod App. It sucks that this does not work on the iPod but when i am on a call i can go to the iPod & play the music and listen to it on my bluetooth headset which is a regular one without the a2dp technology. what the hell is apple doing????

I posted the files and instructions on enabling MMS and Tethering on any iPhone on AT&T network
chrissheldrick.com
Bluetooth paired with my Motorola S9 but the pause / next / previous track buttons do nothing. Come on Apple! I can't believe you didn't know about this. Should have mentioned this on your website before I paid my $10 and wasted my time which is more than that. This is the only feature I cared about.
Quit a few let downs and functionality that just fell short!
Tethering, well I still use Netshare and the hack.
MMS, would have been nice... I can wait
Bluetooth Stereo - volume control from iPhone is not working for most models and relys on headset to do so.
Nike+ support, still missing for upgraded 3G. It was just an app with BT support. At least they could have supported the module like the Nano.
Video, still missing. If you jailbreak your phone you can get video. My SE phone from 2003 could do 2MP and video with zoom.
I think is just nickel and diming us for max profits. You need to buy the new hardware...why, some of it is the same, just has new apps on the 3Gs
hay Guys are we able to connect our Bluetooth with other i phone n are we able to copy our contect from phone memory to sim if anyone knew replay me plss

I would be really happy if APPLE fix really buggy connectivity with bluetooth headsets, maybe it's only my problem, but i just bought Jabra BT620s, everything is great but track buttons doesn't work (skimming and next/previous), and its impossible to use voice control functions since iPhone OS doesn't on pushing call button... react
BTW, my bluetooth functionality in iPhone become "unavailable" after trying to invoke voice control...
Apple, please - add support for all Bluetooth headsets functions!
Will this mean that I can use a motorola s9 stereo headset with me iphone 3g with 3.0 update? Yeah!!!!!!!!!1
The Motorola S9 will not work. It will pair with the iphone but all the funtions of the S9 will not work. At first the headset will answer a call, then the volume will go down by its own. With that say goodbye to the sterio music. Control button wont work at all. The update to 3.0.1 didn't fix this problem either. But I have hope one day I can use my S9, it would be cool.
I'm having a bluetooth issue with 3.0 but it's not related to Wifi. Since I "upgraded", when someone calls me while I have bluetooth on and paired with my Jawbone, it sometimes doesn't actually broadcast over my headset. Even though bluetooth is on and my headset is on and the bluetooth indicator on my phone is blue, I have to hold the phone to my ear. It works fine when I call someone, but I have intermittent problems when receiving calls.
i have a motorola H500 headset and it wont pair with my ipod touch. well, first of all, it CANT even DETECT IT! but my motorola phone is able to pair with the headset and use it.
maybe there are only specified bluetooth earphones SPECIFIC for ipod touch. thats why they said "compatible" in their website. it meant, not all will be able to pair with it.
can i send pictures to my iphone using bluetooth ?
hey i want to send my mates porn pics and vids but none of them have a iphone and i have a iphone 3gs . So can i or not? cheers mate
All I want is for the iphone to be able to connect via Bluetooth to other cell phones with bluetooth so that files, photo, and video may be transfered!
What many people said - is there any word on data exchange with other non-iphone cells? Tried it today with several phones, no dice. Anyone heard some rumours or announcements from Apple regarding that function?
Have u been listening to us iPhone users. For the most part we don't care about things like that. what we really want is the ability to pair with other devises.
Here's a workaround that I have found after a little leg work. Essentially you are making a call, putting the call on hold, then starting your iPod and listening to your music. Only problem I found was most automated phone lines hung up on you after :45-1:00. My mission was to find a recording that loops as I have unlimited minutes and use my iPod while working in my shop for 8-11 hours a day. The number I found was an old ass outdated weather hotline somewhere in FL. Here's the work around for the music without any additional devices plugged to ur iPhone:
- call 954-250-0212
- select your audio source as your BT
- place call on hold
- hit the home button
- start your iPod
- Jam out with no wires

hi everyone ive found a bluetooth app in iphone apps book, it's called( photo share,) but you can only share them with other iphone & ipod users only. i think apple are being very petty over their applications for this phone.
I find it strange that I can connect with BT Nokia E51 with Mac running on MacOS 10.4 and transfer files... while I'm not able to connect iPodTouch 3rd generation with the 3.x OS with the same Mac.
Getting error message that the device (the iPod?) doesn't have required something. Also, I'm not able to transfer files (and in fact, connect for longer than 1 second)the iPod with the Nokia phone. Considering it - I would hardly say that the iPod (and the iPhone?) have a BT in them...
And where do i get my ipod unlocked?
Can I send pix via bluetooth

Very helpful article thanks... I too was unaware of the W3C mobile site validation.
I was recommended this website by my cousin. I'm no longer sure whether this post is written by way of him as nobody else recognize such specific approximately my trouble. You are amazing! Thank you!
