Buy a Hopper from Dish, get a free iPad mini (soon)

Dish Network Corp. says that beginning January 17 you'll be able to get a free iPad mini when you sign up for their service. It's actually an extension of an existing program, but up until now it's been the full-sized iPad 2 (instead of first-year programming discounts).

What's the difference between iPads?

'iPad' sounds like just one thing, but Apple has two distinct iPad lines - full-size and mini - and two distinct generations - new and old - available for sale right now. There's the brand new iPad Air and Retina iPad mini, and there's the held-over iPad 2 and iPad mini. But what's the real differences between all these iPads? Does more money really get you more features, does saving up-front cost you in the long run, and how much tablet do you really need? If you're looking to get your first iPad, or looking to get one for family or friends, figuring it all out can be confusing. Here's what you need to know!

74% of Apple mobile devices now running iOS 7

Apple has posted a chart on their developer center showing that iOS 7 adoption, as measure by connections to the App Store between November 25 and December 1, 2013, has reached 74%. That means, in the less than 3 months since launch, very nearly 3 out of every 4 iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads that connect to the App Store are now running the latest version of Apple's mobile software. 22% are running iOS 6, and only 4% are running iOS 5 or earlier.

iPad Air vs Retina iPad mini: The other decision!

As Rene pointed out yesterday, one of, if not the most frequent question we've been asked this past few weeks is which iPad should you buy. Which iPad would we buy? Podcasts, buyers guides, reviews of each, but it seems everyone really wants to know which gets our personal recommendation. Rene outlined some fine points in both camps, so we'll not go over the same ground again – so if you haven't, go read! – but we came to a different decision. For me, if I really, truly, had to choose just one, I'd be taking the Retina iPad mini.

iPad Air vs Retina iPad mini: The decision!

iPad Air vs. Retina iPad mini. It seems like that's all I'm getting asked about these days. We've done podcasts about it we've done full-on buyers guides for it, and I've done a complete iPad Air review and iPad mini with Retina display review, and still, the questions. Haven't. Stopped. Coming. But I've used both now, a week exclusively on the Air, a week exclusively on the Retina mini, and a week switching back and forth. So, what's the answer?

iPad mini with Retina Display hitting resellers in the UK, 4G LTE models still look scarce

When the iPad mini with Retina Display first launched, here in the UK there was no initial reseller availability – as indicated on the GSX portal. It was either Apple or don't get one, but thankfully that seems to have changed with several major retailers now offering Apple's latest. However, if you're wanting a 4G LTE model then you'll be looking much, much harder, as it seems that WiFi only is about all that's available in a lot of places right now.
