AT&T rolling back upgrade eligibility dates for next iPhone?

We have some good news for those of you who are AT&T customers as it appears the carrier is rolling back upgrade eligibility dates for early adopters of last years iPhone 3GS. I have been keeping an eye on my upgrade date online for the past two weeks waiting for it to change from 11/20 with no luck just yet but a MobileCrunch reader has noticed a change to their account.

"Not sure if anyone [..] has noticed this same thing, but my Upgrade Eligibility date on my AT&T account switched from 11/21 to 6/21 in the last day or so. I bought a 3GS on launch day last year, and my upgrade date read 11/21 since then. A few other folks in my office have noticed the same changes happening to their accounts as well."

Could Monday June 21st be the actual release date of the next iPhone? We are leaning towards no considering his original update was 11/21 while mine is 11/20 and based off that assumption, my upgrade date should change to 6/20 which falls on a Sunday. All of the speculation will come to an end at WWDC in the beginning of June. Until then, check your accounts to see if any changes have been made and let us know in the comments below!

AT&T rolling back upgrade eligibility dates for next iPhone?

Sort by Rating

I was told by an at&t represenative that it's gonna be available on the 18th of June.
I'm pretty sure it'll stay with AT&T after all (:

My dad and I are on a family share plan, we both bought the 3GS when it came out, and our upgrade dates were both moved to 6/20

Mine rolled back last year as well. Plus I did notice on mine like two weeks ago that it had jumped from November to June. I guess this could mean something.

Mine just says an error has occured and I have to call a 800 number to find out...to lazy to do that right now :(

I bought a 3GS back when it first came out at discount price (not upgrade price) and mine still says i can't upgrade untill March 2011=(

mine says 2/20/11. I bought my 3gs on launch day. my bill is $300 a month and i work through the premiere site.

They definately changed upgrade dates, I was eligible for my upgrade in May of 2011 and I just checked now and i'm now eligible in December 17, coincedentilly I activated my acct on Dec 16th. So it will have been a full year and they usually wait till a year and a half fr from the activatation date. Good info to know since I work at a Radioshack and we sell the iPhone. It will help us close much easier.

I bought the 3g on October 1, 2008 so I should be due for a new phone until the end of September. However, I just checked and my date has been moved up to 6/2, nearly 4 months earlier and several weeks before WWDC.

I bought my 3g on 3/1/09 and mine still says 11/02/10. Not sure if they just didn't get to all of them yet.

Ever since I checked mine 6 months ago, mine has always said that I can get an iPhone upgrade on 6-19-2010. So I wouldn't put any stock on that being the release date unless they decided that date 6 months ago.

I'm so hoping Rogers or Robers rather, will follow AT&T's lead and allow me to upgrade my 3GS to the new iPhone also.
Any word on what Canadian companies (ie. Rogers, Fido, Bell and Telus) are doing Rene or anyone else at tipb?

My line was always eligible every 12 mos because mine is the primary and our bill is high enough (our bill is 211$ a month after tax for 5 lines :S)
But the g/f's line has a 3GS (got them the same day, like every year, on iDay) - hers still says Feb 2011 as of right now.

I hate AT&T's web site. I'm on the phone now with an AT&T CSR. She can't find the upgrade link on the web site, either, but she told me my contract date is Feb 2011. I also have an air card that expires at the end of this month, but I'm going to cancel it.

I traded out my 3G to the 3GS in July of last year and it says mid December for upgrade. With the trade in that I got at Flipswap, plus the AT&T upgrade price it only cost me about $40 to trade up to the 3GS. Was hoping to flip it again, but perhaps not.

I bought mine on sept 4th and my phone is upgrade eligible on sept 4th 2010. However my wifes says 5 4 2011. That normal for iPhones? Only the main line gets it?

Oh, and by the way. Could this be a sign from AT&T that their 5 year deal did change and they are trying to lock everyone into a 2 year contract before the iphone hits other carriers?
Just a thought to stir the pot.

HERE IS A QUICK WAY TO CHECK !
Check your upgrade eligibility

  1. Dial NEW# (639#) on your phone.
  2. Press the Send key.
  3. Within seconds, your upgrade eligibility is delivered by text message to your phone screen.

WTF I got a 3gs on launch day and mine is still a year or so away. But how did others have theirs rolled back?!?

Got my 3G in April of 09 and it still says my upgrade is in Dec 2010. I'm so sad. I hope my date moves up.

Boots
calm down. My guess is they're slowly updating this and you'll see a change in a near future.
I have 2 3GS phones , both bought on release date last June.
Right now ONE of them says elgible 6/19. The other one says 2/11/2011. They both used to say Feb 2011. I'm thinkin within the next week or so BOTH will say 6/19

Hey chris both of ur lines dropped to earlier dates? Anyone else have 2 lines and have both their dates change?

That's lame I bought a 3g in 12/08 and my upgrade month is still 8/10.... Lame if people who have a 3gs can upgrade before me haha :/

My brother in law was in August, and he still is in August. Technically, he should be eligible now since he bought his iphone without the discount, but we never called customer service to rectify it.
I actually have 5 lines on my account, 3 of which with iPhone (mine, wife, brother in law). We both moved up, my brother in law didn't.
Chris

Ok so just checked, I hve 3 iPhones on my account..
my 3g purchased 12/08
my mothers 3gs purchased 6/09 (launch date)
my sisters 3gs purchased 7/09
the funny thing is that
my 3g upgrade date is 8/10
my mothers 2/11
my sisters 7/10
so what gives my sister who purchased her iPhone last of us all gets to upgrade before all of us.

I bought mine the first day it launched... my eligibility upgrade says that i am eligible on feb 20, 2011... it hasnt changed for me yet, but hopefully it does coz i want the new iPhone!!!

I brought my 3GS in Jan of this year and I am eligible for an upgrade June of next year...so I will be ready for iPhone5...lol

boy att sure makes it difficult eh?
This is my first time coming up on upgrading w/ att. In the past i was with verizon and its pretty clear. Everyone has random dates it seems. Anyone know what the actual policy is for family plan upgrades with iphones?

I bought my 3GS on launch day and I'm already eligible to upgrade. In addition they say they will waive my activation fee! :) 4th generation iPhone here I come! :)

bought my 3g last March. Here's my message "A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on 11/25/2010. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price with a 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee.". I pay $130/ month
Verizon here I come.

I bought a 3G in 3/09 and my date is still 8/10. No changes for me. I don't understand how people who purchased a 3GS after me are getting rolled back before me? ATT better make this right!

Got my 3G April 09 and I've been eligible on 09/15/10 from day one. Hope this changes in time. It's BS if those who have a 3GS(launch or not) become eligible before me.

"As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price, along with a 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please proceed with the online upgrade process for pricing details. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 06/20/2010."
Cool. I bought the 3GS on its launch date. Don't tell them but I was going to get the new iPhone anyway.

I am being screwed by att i suppose because I have a phone that became eligible on april the 12th. That iphone 3g account was activated in August of 2008... A second line, an iphone 3gs was bought on launch date (and stolen a few weeks ago) and for the NEW line it states:
"take advantage of our no commitment pricing. Additional discounts may be available on 02/20/2011"
blah blah blah... so in other words, no early upgrade for me.

I work for the company and we roll back dates the more your monthly bill is. Not based upon when the iPhone allegedly launches. And no matter what AT&T rep tells you, we have NO CLUE when the phone is coming out.

I preordered my 3GS and got it on launch day and my upgrade date has been 6/19/2010 for a while. I'm on the premier site and my bill is over 100/month.

@ AT.T
then explain the fact that my bill has been around $150-$200 for nearly TWO YEARS.
ATT has been ok customer service wise, but when i asked about that at one point they said its automated by a calendar, when I mentioned how much I pay, they said that did not matter.
Go figure.

Maybe they're doing this because a Verizon iPhone is on the horizon? Attempt to lock customers in before they have a choice?
And it looks like they MIGHT be only offering to those whose last iPhone was purchased with a full upgrade - because, they may be reasoning, if someone paid extra to upgrade early in the past, we might be able to get them to do it again . . .

As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a reduced discount, along with a 2-year commitment. Our records indicate that you will be eligible for an upgrade to an iPhone at a discounted price on 06/22/2010
So discounted prices??? What's that going to run us???

My wife and I both got iPhone original on launch day. Two years later(last year), we both got 3Gs upgrades. Now, I am eligible for upgrade on 6/20/10, and she is eligible on 2/11/11. Boy, she's gonna be pissed when I get the new hotness on launch day, and she has to wait 8 months!! Maybe it will change by June. If not, she will have to learn to live with disappointment!

As I said in comment number 4, I was moved up big time to 06/14/2010. Here is what the text message outputs:
You may select equipment at our full retail pricing. An upgrade may be available on 06/14/2010.

The AT&T rep who posted here explained it best. There have always been different upgrade dates for people depending on other factors, including your monthly bill. I doubt what people have been seeing has anything to do with the upcoming iPhone. We have two lines, and the first line is on a one year cycle (which happens to be eligible 6/20/10 since we bought a 3GS on that line on launch day, 6/19/10). The second line is upgrade eligible after 20 months, which I believe is the standard.
My understanding is that if you spend a certain undisclosed amount, your upgrade cycles may be shorter than the standard 20-24 months. I have asked customer service about it, but haven't received much information, so I don't think everyone at AT&T even knows what the criteria are. I have been told by AT&T that it isn't possible to have a line eligible after a year, even though I can verify that isn't the case and have seen many others report that as well.
It seems to be more than just the dollar amount spent on a line. It may be that they take into account the voice plan, but do not count things like data and texting. I have also heard that they look at the average charges on a line over a few months, which may be why people are seeing their upgrade dates change. I think it's a coincidence that this is in anticipation of the next iPhone launch, or it may be just that people are thinking about upgrades now and checking their eligibility.
To @Diggidi - no one knows yet what the pricing of a new iPhone will be. What you are seeing about discounts and reduced discounts is their rather confusing wording about the types of upgrades. What they currently have is a full discount with a new two year contract, generally equivalent to new customer pricing, a "reduced discount" or "early upgrade" which is somewhere between the full retail price and the upgrade price but still requires a new two year contract, and "no commitment" pricing, which offers no discount, but no requirement to sign a new contract either. They clarified the early upgrade pricing with the launch of the 3GS last year, I'm sure in response to all of the people who were upset that they couldn't upgrade their 3G to a 3GS.
This has all probably been a bit of a nightmare to AT&T, who pre-iPhone could keep people happy by giving them their 24 month upgrade (with some cheapie free phone) a couple of months early. Now they have a large vocal customer base fully expecting that they will be able to upgrade their expensive smartphone every year, and furious if they can't.

I am furious with AT&T. I have the original iPhone from 2007 and since I moved to another state last year, AT&T changed my contract when all I requested was an area code number change. They are saying it is a "relocation" and now nothing can be done. My "new" contract expires 8/2011. According to AT&T they will not change my eligibility.

My original upgrade date was 07/01/2011, however, last summer I was tossed into my pool with my month old iPhone 3GS, so I was forced to buy another on 07/31. Now my "updated" upgrade date is 08/01/2010. Not too bad. I'm sure I'll figure out a way to get the new phone sooner.

I upgraded from a 2007 iPhone to a 3GS on launch day last year. I am on a business discounted pricing plan so I guess that's why mine is stuck in Feb 2011...
"As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a reduced discount, along with a 2-year commitment. Our records indicate that you will be eligible for an upgrade to an iPhone at a discounted price on 02/21/2011."
Kind of disappointed in this as I would like a new one this year but I guess that's the price I pay for getting the discount each month. :-(

Mine rolled back to june 18 or so. Don't know when it happened, but I was adding a line and accidentally clicked upgrade. Thought they were asking for the main account holder's number (it was a third party retailer) and they spit back out that I wasn't eligible for an upgrade until June. Much to my surprise.

Dubbdee, I am on a business discount and I got the rollback. Perhaps it's related to how much your bill is or perhaps it's slowly rolling out. It may be that it only affects American accounts if you live elsewhere.

@dubdee: Same thing for me, I get a discounted rate from my college and my upgrade date is 2/21/2011..
"As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a reduced discount, along with a 2-year commitment. Our records indicate that you will be eligible for an upgrade to an iPhone at a discounted price on 02/21/2011"
Sucks. :(

Gus if you didn't get a new phone when you relocated you are eligible for a new phone. I would call back and speak to someone else and explain that you never received a new phone when you relocated, you were eligible a long time ago. From what I understand you don't have to get a phone at the time of signing the contract and you can save your eligibility for later use.

Bought iPhone 3g 5/24/09 then AT&T let me switch it for 3gs on launch for no additional price. And Now my upgrade is for 5/20/10 yahh I'm gunna buy this with graduation money and sell my jailbroken and unlockable 3gs on eBay so I'm gunna get a 4 gen and money to !

mine still says 11/20.. I have been an early adopter of every iPhone since The 2.5G iPhone.. so hopefully I will get this one on launch day..

My wife and I bought a 3GS a week after launch. We have a family plan and her date was moved down to 6/25 while mine is still 2/25/2011. I'm hoping they haven't updated every number yet.

Bought mine for the 2nd tier discounted price ($599 for 32GB) a few days after launch day for the 3GS...upgrade eligibility date remains at 12/8/2010. I'm on the bare minimum 450 plan with the bare minimum 200 text messages.
Not like I'll be able to afford it by Mid June anyway...TV upgrade was more important for me this year, otherwise I would have saved some tax refund money. I'll probably be waiting until my eligibility date. I'm pretty happy with my 3GS at this point. An upgrade would be nice, but isn't essential. My phone runs quite nice. The upgrade from the 3G was a big one, as it ran a bit sluggish while jailbroken. I have no such issue with my 3GS.

OK, so bought the 3G for $99 in Sept. 2009. The full text of my situation from AT&T is:
"A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on 05/07/2011. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price with a 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please visit a participating iPhone sales location for pricing on this offer."
So, how much is the discount going to be? An $18 one-time-charge I can always live with.

Mine still shows 11/20 2010 I upgraded from 2G iPhone last July to the 3GS 32GB ... will keep an eye out.

this is probably a hoax to get everyone excited. My friend said he was one of the first to get a 3gs and nothing has changed. I think its all fake info.

I'll keep looking to see if this changes (no change as of this morning) but I'm not holding out hope. With the discount and the lowest possible package I probably don't send them enough cash for them to justify giving me the upgrade.

Well after a phone call and email AT&T has me all set and ready to go - they must really want to keep me and my family on board - I have never seen them bend over backwards so quickly for anything.

Mine used to be set for the end of December - now it's changed over to 9/7/10. WOO WHOO!

I have an upgrade eligible at the end of May. I think I orginally bought my iphone a while ago but I got it replaced once already at a discount for 200 only 6 months ago and I can upgrade really soon. I am not sure if the dates are random or what but I am not complaining

Same here..my upgrade elibility date says 11/19/10 but I am not as luck as some of you are...it is still the same...

Dear Mr. Slater,
Thank you for taking the time to e-mail AT&T regarding upgrade dates changing for your friends and family, to June, to be able to get the new iPhone. I understand your frustration, and apologize for any error regarding this. My name is Beki Chappell, and I will be happy to review your account.
After reading your email, I have researched and been unable to locate any information on the release of a new iPhone, or any changes to the upgrade dates of the contracts, to upgrade to this new device, if and when it is released.
To be eligible for a fully discounted phone upgrade, a minimum of 18 of the 24 months of the contract, would have to be completed. For your account, this would be on 02/19/11.
Again, we thank you for allowing us the opportunity to assist you with your account, Mr. Slater. If we can be of further assistance, please contact us at http://www.att.com/wireless. Should you have additional concerns or questions about this issue please reply to this email. If you need to contact us again regarding a new issue please send us a new email via the contact link through your online account. As always, thank you for choosing AT&T!
Sincerely,
Beki Chappell

Okay. Here's what i did. I got an I-Phone 3G on the date that the 3Gs came out in June 2009 because my dad didn't think it was necessary and neither did I. Well it says I'm eligible for an upgrade in 2/21/11. That's complete bull because I called AT&T and they said that an upgrade contract ends in 12-18 months making it okay for you to upgrade after what it is. Well that's 20 months not 18 making me ineligible for the iphone 4 upgrade which really pisses me off because i'm stuck with a iphone 3g that is running the new os 4 software extremely badly. I just want to know why it isn't 18 months like they said it was when i called. AT&T really pisses me off.

I’m certainly amazed to acknowledge how good a lot of these previews about windows 7 phone seem to be; but I’m glad to see it.I mean, what functions this windows phone OS has better than the others !!!!I mean the one million question is what's going to be on the mind of early adopters (I am seriously considering being part of that group) is going to be when we might start to see software updates that will fill in some of the gaps that people are already droning on about; and whether or not we’ll be able to update the first generation devices to those new software versions.

Your web link you mailed me came thru, thanks, but it looks to not be working, does anyone have a backup, or mirror source? Just something that works.
