Nissan launching a line of self repairing iPhone cases

Japanese car manufacturer Nissan has announced that it will soon be launching a line of self repairing cases for the iPhone. The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone cases will use a special paint technology that Nissan already uses on its cars. The paint was developed back in 2005 in a joint effort between Nissan, the University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials Inc.

The outer ‘paint’ is made from polyrotaxane, which means that when damage occurs to the coating in the form of a fine scratch, the chemical structure is able to react to change back to its original shape and fill the gap – ‘healing’ the blemish.

The case was launched to the press at a motor show in Dubai at the weekend with limited numbers available for testing. If demand is high, Nissan will look to launch the cases properly later in the year. It already licenses the paint technology to Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo who uses the finish on one of its own mobile devices

Polish Jedi says:

It's alien technology from Roswell.

Mike says:

Interesting they're debuting it for a iPhone case first. When I first heard about this technology, it was to be for cars. The idea was when you get a scratch in the paint, you expose it to sun light and it repairs itself. It's wicked cool.

not says:

It's only going to work for fine scratches, like swirls, etc. It not going to fix your paint when someone keys your car or iPhone. lol

Mike says:

Maybe not this iteration, no. But the goal of the technology is/was to take care of something as destructive as keying.

BeyondtheTech says:

And why is it not part of a phone's design instead of an add-on case?
