How to stop your iPhone or iPad from bothering you.

While Notification Center is a great way to make sure you never miss an alert, there are some times when you might not want to hear the beeping and the buzzing that typically comes with them. With Do Not Disturb, your iPhone or iPad will keep collecting all your alerts but will do so quietly. Whether you're in a meeting, at a romantic dinner, or simply trying to get a good night's sleep, Do Not Disturb will make sure you can talk, eat, or sleep in peace and quiet, and still find all your alerts waiting for you when you're ready.

How to schedule Do Not Disturb for specific times on iPhone or iPad

Something cool you can do is set your iPhone or iPad on Do Not Disturb for certain times. This could be useful if you have something scheduled every day where you can't have your iPhone bleep at you, for example, if you have a class with a particularly crotchety professor, or a meeting with your old-school boss. Here's how:

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on Do Not Disturb.

launch settings app, then tap do not disturb

  3. Tap the Scheduled switch to On in order to activate the scheduling feature.
  4. Tap the blue times directly underneath Scheduled.
  5. Swipe up or down to select the From and To times that you'd like Do Not Disturb to be active.

tap scheduled switch to on, then tap blue times, then swipe up or down to set your from and to times

That's it. Do Not Disturb will now come on at the time you've schedule. Unfortunately Do Not Disturb only lets you schedule one block of time currently, hopefully a future iteration of iOS will let you schedule multiple Do Not Disturb sessions.

How to customize Do Not Disturb settings on iPhone or iPad

You're out with your significant other on the first date you've had since your baby was born. They will be very upset with you if you take a call from one your crazy friends or your boss during your date.

Not a problem. You know how to enable Do Not Disturb on your iPhone, so you do that. But there's one problem with that. What if there is an emergency with your baby? iOS has a simple solution for you: customize the Do Not Disturb settings so that calls from your home number always ring through. Here's how to do it:

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on Do Not Disturb.
  3. Tap on Allow Calls From.

launch settings app, then tap do not disturb, then tap allow calls from

  4. From here, you can select from the following options:
    • Everyone: Allows calls from everyone on your contacts list.
    • No One: Allows calls from no one.
    • Favorites: Allows calls from contacts in your Favorites list.
    • Specific group: A specific group of contacts.
  5. Tap the Repeated Calls switch to on to allow a call from the same number through if received within three minutes of the first.
  6. Tap on either of the Silence options to select your choice:

    • Always: Calls and notifications are always silent.
    • Only while iPhone is locked: Calls and notifications are silent only when the iPhone is locked.

Select setting for allow calls from, then tap repeated calls, then tap option for silence mode

That's all there is to that. As you can see, there are a number of ways you can customize the Do Not Disturb function. So, whether you want to allow calls from just one number, or a group of them, you can easily do that, and much more.
