iMore show 317: iPhone 5 gripes

You guys discussed an issue with the "shaking" sound coming from the sleep/wake button on the iPhone 5. I noticed this as well when I received mine, but I read a few things online about it and the noise is not coming from the sleep/wake button. Its the camera and its autofocus. If you tap on the back of the phone and work your way up to the camera the noise will increase. This is apparently normal, and has been since previous generations. Also, just holding the sleep/wake button with your finger and tapping or "shaking" the phone will easily rule out the button as the culprit. Just thought you guys would like to know. Thanks and great show!

Maybe it's because there's only one new device a year or it's just an Apple thing but it seems like there's a concerted effort by the tech media to magnify, nitpick and exaggerate every possible flaw with iPhone, real or imagined. Having both an iPhone 5 and a Galaxy Nexus, I still prefer to use the iPhone over the Nexus in most situations and the iPhone 5 is a considerable improvement over the 4S and niggling concerns over the phone are actually with iOS 6 as opposed to the device. As my secondary phone, I enjoy the GN as well but that doesn't mean I couldn't point out it's flaws or that one couldn't dig up negativity about the device on the various forums.

I don't know about you guys, but my iPhone 5 battery is killer. I'll get through a whole day (with normal use) and still have 60-70% power left at 5pm. I'm really surprised too. Best battery life I've ever seen on a phone. Maybe the device I got is just special.

I agree on battery. I get great performance. Surprising too. Cause as with any new device, I've been using the hell out of it. Usually on lte. And doing a lot of data usage/streaming. Definitely best battery I've experienced on iPhone.

1) I wish there was a way in settings to have each webpage automatically go to "full site" vs. mobile site. Some sites have a link, but for others, it's hard to find.

2) Will Apple ever put an FM/AM radio in the iPhone? And before everyone jumps on me saying radio is so 80's or use an app like Radio, I want one to tune to empty FM frequencies for TV audio when I am at the gym.

Thanks for the replies.

I really hate getting a text in my ear. It's always very annoying and totally cuts whoever I'm talking to off! Ugh.

Hello! I'm a new listener of the podcast. And I loved the podcast. I'm Brazilian, my English is not so good, but I can understand you very well.Just do not quite understand when you talk really fast, but I can follow in mid-sentence. lol
I really like the iMore Show. Georgia's voice is very beautiful just like her. Rene congratulations podcast.

I just received my black iPhone 5 yesterday and have to say I love it. Traded in my S3 for it actually and haven't regretted it yet. Ive had an iPhone 3g, 4, 4s and multiple android devices as well. I have to say this is the smoothest and most enjoyable device Ive used to date! Oh, I must also add in that Georgia is stunning to behold :)

Georgia's bashing of the iPhone 5's Maps was really weird b/c thats maybe my favorite thing about the phone. I use Apple Maps constantly and its awesome, smooth, and beautiful. It hasn't failed me at all. She spoke about Maps like its a HUGE FAILURE across the board, but she doesn't speak for my experience. I'm sure it isn't so great for everyone, but it is a welcome upgrade for me. And Siri is not that bad, either. My complaints about the iPhone 5 are that the autobrighness has a mind of its own sometimes, the camera is still not as good as a $99 Nikon, and the Lightning cables and adaptors are ridiculously expensive and should have been free.

I don't agree with the assessment Rene made that the purple fringing/flare is due to the Camera being "better". As a photographer sometimes we purposefully use lens flare as an effect, this is not the case with this accidental fringing due to hardware malfunction or poor design. It appears to me to be an aberration and an annoyance. I have never seen this issue with my 4s and I shoot a great deal with it.
