Apple alerting users to reserved iCloud email addresses
Apple has begun sending out emails to inform iCloud users that @icloud.com email addresses have been reserved for them. These seem to be directed towards previous MobileMe users who had @me.com (or legacy @mac.com) addresses. I don't recall email addresses being reserved following the mac.com to me.com transition, and icloud.com, and there's no additional information or context provided. The email simply states:
All new iCloud Mail accounts now come with an @icloud.com email address. As an existing user, we'd like to offer you this new address as well. We have reserved [redacted] for you, and you can now use this address with your iOS devices and computers by following these simple instructions.
If you prefer, you can continue to use your current email address just as you always have.
No matter which address you use, you'll continue to receive all your mail, whether it's sent to your @me.com, @mac.com, or @icloud.com address.
Whether this has something to do with previous, additional MobileMe aliases or something else, I'm not sure. If you received an iCloud email reservation from Apple, let me know.

I got one. The email addresses are already set up. When you go to compose an email, you have the option of using your me.com addy, or your new iCloud addy.
Same here. I now have and use the @icloud address. Actually no big deal to me at all.
I got one this morning. Was never a MobleMe customer; never had a mac.com address, either.
I got the email. I never used MobileMe, but I have a @me.com email when I setup the iCloud service.
Got one today as well. Very short on details. I guess you can set it up on iPhone/iPad or access via iCloud. Not sure I'll be using it. Maybe for Spam stuff.

I got one and have no idea how to access it. I can't log into it and can't set up a new account with it as the address. How the @#%$ is this supposed to work?

I haven't gotten one yet, and for what it's worth I didn't have a MobileMe or .Mac account previously...
Well I just went to the iCloud/Apple ID account management page and it lists an @icloud.com alternative of my @me.com address. Maybe they're just doing it automatically for some users, odd.
All my business cards have me.com. Even though you will still get the emails I'm tired of switching my cards .mac, .me now this. My hotmail has been the same forever.

I got this also, even though I started using the iCloud address a few weeks ago. It gave me the option of having email sent to my me.com account forwarded to the iCloud address, so I didn't need to tell people of an address change.

I received this email this morning. While I don't want to use @icloud I also don't want someone to take it either. Do I need to do anything to look the iCloud address?

What basically happened is that for anyone that has a current @me address you can now send emails from the @icloud.com alias as well nothing really changed but before if you tried to send a email from the @icloud the message would not send. Personally I prefer the @icloud extension but if have been using the @me extension you will still receive all your emails. Nothing has really changed.
I didn't receive the email, but after reading this I checked and the @icloud.com has been activated for me previous @me.com address as I can now log into the previous account using either @me.com or @icloud.com.
Kinda confusing, but at least they reserved the logins. When Microsoft implemented Outlook.com, they didn't -- while it was possible to convert old Hotmail addresses to use the new Outlook.com extension, they weren't reserved -- someone else can get then first if you don't convert...
After upgrading to iOS 6, I had both an @me.com and @icloud.com address such that I could send email from either, but any email sent to the @icloud.com address bounced with a reason of not being a valid address.
I wonder if Apple has finally started enabling the @icloud.com address for receiving email. I haven't gotten the email notification yet though.

Unfortunately it doesn't also let me link to my old mac.com email which has the same prefix. They should have done this when me.com was introduced ... :(
