How to move messages on your iPhone and iPad

The iPhone and iPad are great for quickly handling email. However, if something is important, or requires a lengthy reply, or you can only get to it later, or you simply want to keep your inbox close to zero, the iPhone and iPad are also great for quickly sorting and filing your mail into well organized mailboxes.

How to move individual mail messages to different mailboxes on your iPhone and iPad

  1. Launch the Mail app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap into the Inbox that contains the messages you'd like to move. You can also go into All Inboxes if that's easier.
  3. Tap on the message that you'd like to move in order to open it.
  4. Tap on the Move icon in the lower menu. It is the 2nd one from the left.
  5. Now tap on the mailbox you'd like to move the message to.

How to move multiple messages to different mailboxes on your iPhone and iPad

  1. Launch the Mail app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap into the Inbox that contains the messages you'd like to move. You can also go into All Inboxes if that's easier.
  3. Once you're in an inbox, tap on the Edit button in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
  4. Tap on the messages you'd like to move to a different mailbox so they are highlighted.
  5. Now tap on the Move button in the bottom menu.
  6. Choose the mailbox you'd like to move the selected messages to and they'll automatically be moved there.

It's worth noting that some account types allow for folder mapping which means you can move messages from one account to a different account. When moving a message you can go back to the account list and choose a different account. If your email service provider doesn't support this, you'll just receive an error message stating the messages can't be moved.

Question: I have an iCloud account and it works fine when I want to delete messages on my iPhone. However, I have an IMAP account for my website on the iPhone, also, and, when I try to delete messages, I get that "Unable to move message" error. What's up with that?!

A lot of it has to do with whether or not the service you're using has IMAP and folder mapping support. :\

What is folder mapping? Is it required on the source or destination account? Any RFC references or specific mail server config references would be appreciated.

I know I've moved mail between accounts before, but cannot seem to do it now and am wondering what I might need to enable/disable on the mail servers I use.

As usual with i-stuff it doesn't work. I am trying to import sent iPad mail items to Exchange active sync account. I was all cheered up when I found I can move the messages, except I can't move them to Exchange account (grayed out during move).
