T-Mobile Q1 2013 earnings are out showing good numbers for iPhone 5 sales

T-Mobile has released their Q1 2013 earnings report, and it shows good news for the carrier on the iPhone front. The iPhone 5 only launched officially on April 12, yet T-Mobile reports that they have sold around 500,000 units to new and existing customers. Perhaps coincidentally, they're also reporting an uptake in net customer additions for the quarter, standing at 576,000.

Considering we're half way through a release cycle, the numbers also show us that consumer desire for the iPhone 5 still remains pretty high. T-Mobile already had a sizeable base of iPhone customers who brought their own devices to them, and with the launch of their LTE network they'll surely be hoping that the iPhone 5 continues to post good sales numbers for them.

Also in the quarter, T-Mobile launched their new, subscription based T-Mobile TV application for iPhone, as well as finalizing the merger with Metro PCS. This all comes on the back of their dramatic "UN-Carrier" rebranding and the move away from contract plans.

When Leanna reviewed the T-Mobile iPhone 5, she found a mixed bag when it came to data speeds. LTE was good, but Edge was definitely not so good. Otherwise, it's the exact same iPhone 5 we've come to know and love. While they've no doubts sold a fair few in the last few weeks, how many of you picked one up? I've been working with my new iPhone 5 for a couple of days now. So far, I love it! My last phone was a BlackBerry Bold 9780 and, let me tell you, there's a world of difference. Even though LTE is not available on T-mobile in my area yet (Chicagoland), iPhoncé, her Christian name, is eons faster than what I was accustomed to. It's actually quite shocking to not have to plan another activity for the inevitable wait time for any action that required a data network. In fact, I may give up the idea of multitasking altogether!

I don't quite think it's fair to compare the iPhone 5 with a Bold 9780, being that the Bold is around 2 years old at a time when 4G/"4G" wasn't quite as readily available as it is now and also that the specs of the 9780-though being top of the line for that moment-can't compete with the technology of today. Having owned one, the Bold 9780 was a great phone for its time. But a 9780 doesn't work in the current smartphone marketplace, which is where the new BlackBerry phones come in.

That being said, I also have an iPhone 5 on T-Mobile and don't have LTE yet. The "4G" in NYC is great, so good that I don't feel the immediate need for LTE (that's not to say it won't be welcomed). However Edge is terrible on the phone. On any of the several androids I've had over the years, at least on Edge I can manage to do a few things... slowly. Edge on the T-Mobile's iPhone 5 is walking while tied to a pole. But being that I rarely get Edge, this is not much of an issue.

I didn't mean to disparage the BlackBerry name and I was over the moon when the Z10 went to market. It looks like a great device and I hope it's a harbinger of good things for Thornsten, et al. There was just such a remarkable difference between my last phone--which I purchased a couple of yeas back--and my current one that I had to mention it. My guess is that quite a few Tmo customers are coming off of two year plans and the phones that accompanied them. It's enough to make one giddy!

T Mobile is a fine carrier. I only left them after 10 solid years (voicestream to T Mobile) to get an iphone 4S from verizon a little while ago. Found Verizon to be ridiculously expensive on plans and way too restrictive on call minutes and texts. In my area, the Tampa Bay area of Florida, T mobile actually has the entire area blanketed with coverage and it was this way 10 years ago. I have just went back to T Mobile and bought an iphone 5 and couldn't be happier and saved almost $40/month on my bill.

Now that's funny. But anyway, too bad T-Mobile is the smallest carrier out of the four. Maybe in a few years when their LTE network is widespread to go toe to toe with the big two (not EVEN thinking about Sprint in this case), I will give them a shot. Until then, I'm sticking with AT&T.
