Purported iPhone 5S parts leaks show a steel gray/graphite color... or do they?

Could the iPhone 5s come in graphite? It's a possibility according to new leaked photos.

The photo above shows two button sets that most likely belong to the iPhone 5s. While the light gold color makes sense, the other middle set I wasn't so sure about. New part leaks this morning appear to show a lighter graphite - or steel gray to keep the metal theme going - colored housing for the iPhone 5s that just happens to match the buttons above. So, what does it mean?

To be clear, the two middle button sets are what we are concentrating on. The exterior two are simply the buttons used in the current iPhone 5 that are added for a good visual comparison. While I don't necessarily think Apple will release four models when it comes to the iPhone 5s, I also am not convinced the casing is a fake either. According to Sonny Dickson, who posted the leaked housing photos in graphite, this color will be available alongside black, white, and gold/champagne. That's where I think he may be wrong.

mendmyi managed to snag the photos of the button sets. They sent me the above image last week before posting their own theory about them. While I don't think black is going anywhere, I could possibly believe that they are altering the current black model.

We have known since the release of the iPhone 5 that Apple has had issues with quality control when it comes to anodizing black, or slate as they call it. Before I'd believe there are four potential models for the iPhone 5s, logic may dictate Apple is altering the current black and slate model. Or, perhaps, experimenting with alternatives.

I don't think we've heard anything about another color until now because it doesn't make sense. Whether or not gray replaces black is hard to say. Black is incredibly popular, but is also incredibly hard to anodize consistently. Apple may keep it, because of its popularity, or they may try to replace it for something that provides a better finished product. Time will tell.

I agree, would go for black any day. However, personally I like the graphite more than the gold/champagne.

I'd like to see the graphite on an actual phone picture to see how it really looks. Anyone with great photoshop skills ?

Thanks Ally. Looks pretty damn good. I was gonna go with White this time around ( as I have a black 5 now, 4S was white, 4 was black... ) but may have to change the trend and go with this new color :)

I believe it. The champagne/gold model won't really appeal to men, especially white men. I can't see Apple introducing only one new color, and a color that would appeal mostly to women. So it would make sense to add the champagne color along with a gunmetal gray.

"The champagne/gold model won't really appeal to men, especially white men"

This particular sentence just seems a bit off. I won't get into what I think you're implying, but just know others may take this negatively.

Also, introducing two new colors would put to rest this idea that the champagne phone is just pandering to India and China.

It actually isn't that hard to anodize black consistently - it just require using type III anodization, like SureFire flashlights. Lighter shades are difficult because the color can change slightly depending on precise timing of the process, which is why natural (OD green) anodized items are difficult to color match.

If they can match champagne well, they should have no trouble with black.

Was thinking of switching it up to white. I've always bought black. I would get the graphite one if its true though.

I recently purchased a stainless steel iPod Shuffle. I probably won't ever take it out of its box. It is a thing of beauty and minimalistic elegance. I don't expect a stainless steel iPhone 5 but it would look amazing.

Woah! - We think the rumors have a good possibility of being true. Where the discrepancy comes into play clearly is what men are going to think of a champagne colored phone - and other lifestyle, image related issues. Either way, it's not a make or break feature/element/asset for the new device. It'll just be interesting to see what we get.
