Apple Developing 10", 13", and 15" iTablets?
While most recent rumors have been swirling around Apple developing a 10" iTablet that would basically look like an oversized iPod touch, Gizmodo has a source, said to have been 100% reliable in the past, who's telling them Apple is also planning 13" and 15" tablets, one of which... will run Mac OS X.
This source claims that the two touchscreen prototypes—made of aluminum, but on the shape of big iPhones—were in a factory in Shenzuen, China. One of them "was running Mac OS X 10.5." When I asked, the source didn't know if these were built for demonstration purposes, or if they were preproduction units. The company has a tight relation with Apple but "it's not FoxConn."
Could Apple be making both small, iPhone-like tablets and larger, MacBook-like tablets? Do we want them to?

I wonder what the price points might be...
Also, is it going to be a little more difficult to type being that most people only use their thumbs to type on the iPhone/iPod Touch? How will people adjust to having a touchscreen keyboard on something that will mostly be sitting on their lap?
Anticipation.
It will all be a price factor...... I wouldn't want to WAY over for a tablet when I can get the same thing with the laptop.
10.5? I'm skeptical…
I don't care what it costs! A 15" tablet running OS X? I'll sell my Mustang if I have to!
WOW!!!!
It's going to be pretty hard to type on this unless you lay it down on a flat surface.
If this tablet turns out to have a pressure sensitive surface and a stylus, my head may just explode with excitement.
Honestly It's not that i don't want to see FULL blown MAC OSX... but what i would REALLY like to see would be it's own Tablet OS... is anyone else with me on this?
It's kinda like the cheesyness of Windows TOUCH, like on the HP? They make their own "TOUCH" program that just interfaces with windows...
I don't want that..
I want a full blown touch OS, so that way everything in the OS is built for me using a tablet device...
Anyone else feel the same way?
I predict the tablets will actually be a laptop hybrid. Picture a Macbook Pro with a lift-off removable screen. The screen is a touch screen. The keyboard is Bluetooth. This way you get the best of both worlds. A laptop when you need a laptop and a tablet when you want a tablet.
Voice Recognition FTW
keyboard could be a foreseeable option. however, it will be yet another 'add-on' that Apple lets you purchase...separately...from a 3rd-part vendor...if they decide to even make one.
buy your iTablet today! (bluetooth keyboard & tablet docking stand sold separately). :(
@Macxprt:
Obsolete keyboards are being phased out. Have you seen that new iPhone that everyone's been copying by chance?
A keyboard attachment is going to have to be a must. Reguardless of how far the iPhone has taken multiple touch typing, there's no way they can recreate the speed and precision that comes with an actual keyboard.
@Pierce:
I'll be happy to race you in a typing contest one month after I get my hands on one of these. Chose your weapon. ;)
"choose" (not off to a good start already... LOL)
Well, I would love to see a 15" iTablet; but I would have to agree with iPhoneMilk on the OS. It would have to be a hybrid type of OS where the entire OS is "touch" based just like the iPhone's OS. Regarding a physical keyboard, I would assume it would have to be an optional feature via bluetooth.
All in all, I believe that Apple (if it's all actually true) is making the right decision going towards an iTablet/netbook. My only concern (and also of many) would be the price range of these actual products and how well they stand against price/productivity. I wouldn't want the 15" iTablet to be relatively close to that of an MacBook 15" because many people would lean towards the MacBook because of it's reputation.
I don't buy that Apple would release three tablets, one of which runs a different OS from the others. I don't think they would want to create that kind of confusion in the product line. I can totally see them creating either a smaller tablet that runs its own OS, or a full OS X tablet, but both seems a little out of character for the way they like to keep things simple.
As for the keyboard, I think it's a no-brainer. They already have that cute little bluetooth keyboard. If they wanted to, I'll bet they could get it to work on the iPhone tomorrow, much less a tablet. That seems like the perfect solution. It's about the size of a large-ish tablet, and you could carry it in a pouch of some sort with a slot for the tablet and a slot for the keyboard, or carry the tablet alone if you wanted to travel really light. I suspect the bluetooth might not be as battery-efficient as some other wireless, but I hope they would stick to standards.
I still don't think I'd have any use for it, as I need an iPhone and I need a powerful laptop, and there's just not that much in between that either of those things can't handle, but a tablet with keyboard support and full OS X would be really cool.
My thesis all along has been that Snow Leopard is the pivot OS between the iPhoneOS and MacOS, branches, and whether that means the ability to run Mac Apps unmodified, recompiled or some new form of new hybrid runtime model, it just makes sense that the Tablet is where Apple confronts the matrix between all of these different form factors, something that I blogged about in:
Apple, the ‘Boomer’ Tablet and the Matrixhttp://bit.ly/46CtH
Check it out if interested.

I'll just buy a wireless keybord and mouse.. So happy can't wait
I think most of you don't realize you do have a
need. Picture the new Apple Book, Magazine, and Newspaper store. You'll be downloading full page, color layout, display ad media, and you'll pay for it, cuz it will look better that most of the media you currenty see on line. For a poor example of what will soon be great, check out the magazines category over on the left side of the really awesome Iphone Fast Daily Newsreader http://www.iFastNews.com
I doubt Leapord will be the focus of most of this strategy, it may be a fringe version or a user choice to install it. (added by Mobile using Mippin)
@Joseph California:
I'm reminded of an old quote from P.T. Barnum... nah, never mind.
Good question. Do we want them to? Do we want them to? Hmm.
I heard a rumor that the display will be not 15 inches but 55 inches. Hang it on the wall. :)
” When I asked, the source didn’t know if these were built for demonstration purposes, or if they were preproduction units."
Will wait until September 9th but not wantin one.
I wish I were an iTablet Protective Case manufacturer.
@Truth 2.0:
Yup, I have the same problem with my laptop. Can't type worth didly squat while standing on the street corner.
With as little detail as is currently available, it's hard to comment in what way this device might be useful. My first impression is that the current MacbookPro line is pretty slim, trim and easily portable. A "tablet" without a keyboard for inputting of large amounts of text would hold limited utility for many people unless they find a way to overcome that particular limitation. Perhaps with something like system-wide voice to text input? All you would need is a quality bluetooth headset and the keyboard could become less of a necessity. A touch-sensitive screen then makes the trackpad/mouse more redundant as well. If the MacOS and iPhone OS become more merged then the concept of portable/tablet shells with which an iPhone can dock becomes more realistic too... automatic syncing through a built-in USB dock, etc makes the iPhone and the portable/tablet more integrated. I'm curious what they can do and how this will turn out.
are they going to like explode like the iphones...man that would b a bummer...
I love Apple!!! The Best has not come yet!
I just ran across this article and just had to throw in my own 2 cents :)
When all the kindle rage began I for one was envious of my southern counterparts in the USA who had kindle while we Canadians had squat. Now we have Sony readers in Canada and after demoing one at the Sony Store I can honestly say I WOULD NEVER ever consider buying a Sony reader. In a span of 20 minutes the reader locked up on me not once but twice and an embarrassed sales clerk was forced to reboot the device. My opinion is if I’m going to pay 300 dollars Canadian for a e book reader I shouldn’t have to worry about the hardware locking up, neither should I have to wait 6 to 7 seconds for a simple page flip and neither should I have to wait anywhere from a minute to 90 seconds for a simple 30 page book exert to load up. To compound the problem the Sony readers PDF support is both shoddy and painfully slow and you can’t zoom to read any small print on a PDF file.
The kindle although I have heard little in negative feedback pertaining to how its hardware functions has one HUGE drawback that scares me away from buying it even if it did come to Canada. With kindle you can only read e books in the kindle format and that’s it. What happens say 10 years down the road if I decide I don’t want to use kindle and decide I want another type of e book reader? The answer to that question is I’m S.O.L and any money I used to purchase a kindle format e book is gone down the drain.
The drawbacks to an Itablet is that Apple loves to sock it to the customer price wise and because it will have a back lit screen it will be nearly impossible to read a e book under direct sunlight never mind watch a movie or play a video game. This being said I WOULD STILL rather pay the one time exorbitant cost of a Itablet and have a device that’s both concrete in its design (lets face it the itouch iphone and ipod has shown that Apple can design a good device when they so choose to) and gives me the options of multiple tasks such as music, movies, games e books comic books surfing and whatever else I deemed useful for my personal use by simply using their apps store. I find the idea of a 15 inch screen exciting but I don't know if I would ever want to go beyond 10 inches. The bigger the screen the less battery life a tablet would have and considering I would want a tablet for computer mobility that would be a definite drawback. The 2 clinchers for me will be the price point and whether the tablet will be designed to sync with a PC computer. If I can't sync it with my XP then the device will become very limited to me in its usability.
Although I doubt that the e book reader is doomed I strongly doubt it will ever move forward beyond a small niche product or at least it won’t in its present form. E book readers are still far to primitive in their design and performance and bring to little to the table to warrant me shelling out 300, 200 or even 150 for the devices. Whether people like it or not the SON OF NEWTON (nickname some apple heads have given the itablet) will very much squeeze both the e reader market as well as the net book market. Once it finally gets released Apples CEO Jobs is going to be laughing all the way to the bank.
P.S.
Has anyone heard if the tablet will have any expandable storage such as a SD card slot?
;) ;) ;)
@talkin73:
Well, than that's just unfortunate for them, isn't it? They'll simply be left behind.
Okay, class. I want everyone to get out their keyboards and type this paragraph correctly as fast as possible (with all capitalization, punctuation, etc). Now, type the same paragraph, but only lightly touch the keys without pressing them down (don't worry about capitalization, punctuation, etc).
Which way was faster, and required less effort? Not rocket science, is it? Class dismissed.
And what happens every time one pauses mid-sentence to gather thoughts, or turn a page, or is interrupted? Does it wait? Does it mistakenly enter a period and capitalize the next letter when you resume typing? Does it mistakenly insert a comma, or an em dash, perhaps a question mark? Will it know what to do? No. Then again, maybe it will require speaking pause, punctuation, begin new paragraph, etc commands along the way... in which case, it has just slowed down the process close to the speed of rapid typing.
Text to speech would be fantastic for taking notes and for quick unpolished emails. It would also be great for giving commands to applications. But to write a blog, or a newsletter, or any other important professionally-written document? It's just not there yet... not even close, that I'm aware of.
@Porchop1234:
That was more like your 2 dollars. ;)
That should've read "resume speaking?"
:x D'oh!
@Porchop1234 I don't have an eBook Reader but my take is the Sony lineup is superior to the Kindle lineup. It's too bad you saw a defective Sony Reader that once. Even worse that you've passed the same judgement to all Sony Readers.
I'm thinking of picking up the new, much cheaper $199 Sony Reader that's become available but I still have 2 real books lined up to read :P
The Sony Reader and the Amazon Kindle are dedicated eBook readers that do their job very well. They have incredibly advanced e-ink technology that makes reading on them very easy on the eyes. Try and stare at an eBook on any display, even a nice OLED display, and your eyes are going to strain. Not so with the Kindle or the Reader. Their performance is just fine; no one expects to watch movies or run games on them. I have seen the new generation Sony devices and they offer a touch screen interface and snappy menu navigation. I don't know what you're complaining about.
An iTablet would definitely compete against these dedicated devices. They won't replace eBook readers, but many non-readers, or casual readers, will probably pick them up because of their versatility.
It just doesn't make sense to use LEDs anymore with these things out!
When is it going to come out
