Mac adventure game bonanza: Avernum 2, Icewind Dale Enhanced, and more!

This week I'd like to highlight half a dozen recently-released adventure games you can play on your Mac. Whether it's solo play exploring the surface of an alien world or team-based play in a classic dungeon crawl that's more your speed, I've got something that might appeal to you here.

Some of these games are available via Steam and GOG.com too, so if you're comfortable getting apps from places beside the Mac App Store, it can pay to shop around if you'd like to save a few bucks. In fact, one of them — Grim Fandango — is only available from Steam.

UK banks update their iPhone apps with Touch ID support

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and NatWest have announced updates to their iPhone apps, enabling the support of Touch ID authentication. Since the feature itself has been compromised in the past, unlocking the app using Touch ID will not grant access to all app features. Available to iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus owners, access to fund transfers and other account tasks require additional verification.

iBooks anti-trust monitor once again under fire for antics, billings

Michael Bromwich, appointed by U.S. Judge Denise Cote in the wake of the anti-trust charges leveled against Apple for iBooks deals, is once again under fire in the op ed pages of a prominent publication. This time it's the Wall Street Journal, but the accusation remains the same — that Bromwich abused his role by investigating aspects of the company that have nothing to do with the case, and in the process has billed Apple over $2.65 million for his "services".

Latest IDC numbers show Apple making gains in China

IDC has released the numbers for smartphone shipments by vendor for Q4 2014. Unsurprisingly, Xiaomi is on top with a 13.7 percent market share in the fourth quarter — up from 6.5 percent over the previous year. Perhaps more interesting, however, is that it looks like Apple's launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus helped it jump up to the number two spot in the fourth quarter, with a 12.3 percent market share — up from 5 percent just the quarter prior.

Chris Breen leaves Macworld (and the tech community) for Apple

My friend, former colleague, and Mac guru extraordinaire Chris Breen is leaving Macworld after several decades to go work for Apple. It's a huge loss for IDG, and an even bigger loss for the tech community at large — Chris appeared on podcasts and Lynda videos across the Web, and it's a sad day indeed to think that we won't hear his voice on any tech-related casts from here on out.

DiskWarrior 5 Review: The Essential Mac Disk Maintenance Tool

Maybe you didn't believe me when I said it. Kirk McElhearn chimes in on Macworld with these plaudits:

DiskWarrior remains the essential tool for maintaining and repairing disk problems. For both preventive maintenance and repair it's a must-have tool.

It's not a question of if you will lose data, only a question of when.

A plea to fix multi-group Messages — for our all our sanity

A plea to fix multi-group Messages — for our all our sanity

Though Messages has its quirks, I've been lucky to avoid most of them — I haven't had my message history disappear, nor have random contacts popped in or vanished out of thin air. I've rarely had problems with messages not being received or erroring out.

But I'm not immune to every iMessage problem. And the current bane of my existence is group messages — and the multiple threads they spawn in their wake.
