iPad 2 and iPhone 4 3D demonstration, no glasses required [video]

The EHCI Research Group has produced a demonstration video of 3D without glasses on an iPad 2 and iPhone 4 that will make your jaw drop to the floor! The possibility of glasses–free 3D hitting iOS devices has just become a reality.

Head-Coupled Perspective (HCP) on mobile devices allows to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. It is based on a efficient head-tracker that uses the front-facing camera of the device. We use an off-axis projection in order to adapt the perspective of the 3D scene according to the head's position of the user. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction.

The videos are after the break, you have to see them to believe how good they are. When you have, let us know what you think in the comments!

Daily tip: how to add contact pics to your address book with Cyntact [jailbreak]

Adding contact pictures to your address book on stock iPhones will only show the contact picture when you actually click the contact. For jailbreakers, there's a nifty little jailbreak app called Cyntact that'll add them inline. Cyntact was actually one of the first apps available for purchase in Cydia. It was also written by the creator of Cydia, Jay Freeman (Saurik).

iPhone 5 release pool: Avian says 2011, early 2012?

There's no way we're going to report every "analyst" rumor that comes our way about the iPhone 5 release date -- because holding an iPhone 5 release pool, and holding the analysts' feet to fire, is so much more fun. So, first up, Avian Securities as relayed by Business Insider:

Supporting out comments over the last month, conversations with yet another key component supplier indicates that production for iPhone-5 will begin in September. [...] This leads us to believe that any launch is likely a very late 2011 or more likely a 2012 event.

TiPb Answers: What is a SIM card and what does it do?

Ever wonder what exactly that tiny SIM card in the side of your AT&T/GSM iPhone or iPad 3G is and what it does? The short answer is, it's a Subscriber Identity Module, and it is a small circuit board which is placed in your iPhone (or any GSM phone) in order to identify it to your carrier. It's why you can swap SIMs in GSM phones and your phone number, voice, and data plans are swapped right along with it. Unfortunately, it's also why you can't just take a SIM-locked AT&T iPhone and run in on another carrier. For the long answer, stay with us after the break!
