Dev tip: Hacking AirPlay for 3rd party apps

Dev tip: Hacking AirPlay for 3rd party apps

iOS developer extraordinaire Erica Sadun decided to take a look into iOS 4.2's AirPlay feature (and see if she could figure out why it was restricted to audio-only outside Apple's YouTube and iPod/Video apps (i.e. there are only audio AirPlay API currently available to 3rd party App Store developers). Here's what she's found so far:

Having gotten this proof of concept working, there's still a lot left to get done to transform this into a stable solution that works with general applications. Keep in mind that you'll be working with unpublished APIs, so the above classes and code are not App Store Safe. That's why we have a jailbreak world, after all.

The bad news is it looks like it will take an "Act of Apple" to get proper, video-supporting AirPlay API into developers hands and into App Store apps. (So developers, get thee to the bug report system and ask for this to be fixed and surfaced asap). The good news, at least for now, is that Steven Troughton-Smith has reduced the process to a single line of code, eliminating the YouTube work-around.

Yes, it still won't be App Store safe, but it's jailbreak friendly, works flawlessly, and suggests only a single item that Apple could move to a public API to open up this functionality to developers. What's more, with a little screen scraping or off-screen layer manipulation and a clever use of AVFoundation, you can probably have games working out to Apple TV almost immediately.

Indeed...! Check out her full post via the link below for details on how it all works.

Barrel tweak brings cube transitions to iPhone SpringBoard [Jailbreak]

Barrel tweak brings cube transitions to iPhone SpringBoard [Jailbreak]

Jailbreak developer Aaron Ash released his latest tweak today in the Cydia app store named Barrel which makes your iPhone SpringBoard appear as if it is part of a 3D cube when you switch between pages. The premise of this tweak may be pretty simple but it looks stunning when installed. To make changes you can go into the Settings app and select between making your icons appear as if they are on the outside of the 3D cube or on the inside of the 3D cube.

The only caveat to this tweak is that it requires at least iOS 4.x and it will not work on the iPad at this time. If you are on an iPhone or iPod touch and are currently jailbroken, go check this out and pick it up for $2.99 now in the Cydia app store.

Check out a video of Barrel in action after the break and let us know what you think. Will you be using it?

Warning to unlockers: Apple implemented baseband signature check in iOS 4.2.1!

Warning to unlockers: Apple implemented baseband signature check in iOS 4.2.1!

Apple has once again raised the stakes in their continuing cat and mouse game with unlockers by implementing a boot level signature check in iOS 4.2.1 that will cause the device to fail to boot if the baseband firmware is not correct. This is clearly a reaction to TinyUmbrella's ability to block baseband upgrades on the iPhone 4.

If you try and implement TinyUmbrella when installing 4.2.1 you will be thrown into recovery mode without the ability to kick yourself out of it unless you install the new baseband or downgrade back to iOS 4.1 (if you've saved your SHSH blobs).

Steve Jobs: iPad with iOS 4.2 is a target few other tablets will hit

Steve Jobs: iPad with iOS 4.2 is a target few other tablets will hit

When announcing the iOS 4.2 update yesterday Steve Jobs once again took the opportunity to lay into the tablet competition, saying:

“Once again, the iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit.”

Unlike iPhone, which got iOS 4 back in June, iOS 4.2 is a generational improvement for iPad, which has been stuck on iOS 3.2 since it debuted back in April. Multitasking, folders, AirPrint, AirPlay, threaded email, unified inbox, and more (see our complete iOS 4.2 for iPad walkthrough for all the details).

While RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook, HP's webOS PalmPad, and no doubt a legion of future Android 2.3 and 3.0 tablets are waiting in the wings, only the Galaxy Tab has shipped to date (not counting Windows Tablet PC or Archos, which are different in kind).

I had a chance to try out the Bell version of the Galaxy Tab over the weekend and came away thinking it doesn't really compete with the iPad at all. That's not to say no one will buy a Galaxy Tab -- 600,000 have reportedly been sold in the last month --but at 7-inches and running a thinly skinned version of Android 2.2 Froyo, it felt more like a big Galaxy S phone than a distinct tablet device.

iOS 4.3 rumored for December?

iOS 4.3 rumored for December?

MacStories is claiming a "reliable source" has told them Apple was previously targeting a December release for their next update, iOS 4.3 for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad:

when Apple didn’t know about the WiFi issues in the GM seed of iOS 4.2, the OS was scheduled to be released weeks before Nov. 22nd. Apple found out about the WiFi issues, released a second GM build and iOS 4.2 came out yesterday. It came out in November, but it should have been out in the first half of November. Anyway, before the WiFi issues were discovered, Apple was already planning to release a new build of iOS 4.x in mid-December. Most specifically, they were planning for an iOS 4.3 release on December 13th, which is a Monday.
