Review: NewsGator Online Makes RSS Reading Simple, But Irritating

My day revolves around web-based RSS readers. Google Reader, Bloglines Beta, NewsGator...you name it, I've tried it. Unfortunately those services aren't conveniently rendered on iPhone's 3.5" display, and require lots of pinching, jiggering, and side-scrolling to view content. Adding to that frustration, Safari tends to choke on AJAX code which these online readers employ heavily - crashing the browser and dumping you back to the home screen.

Enter Newsgator Online for mobile users; a service designed for small screens with low overhead.

Apple Launches iPhone on UK's O2 Network, Sorry Limeys...no 3G

Apple Launches iPhone on UK's O2 Network, Sorry Limeys...no 3G

Bloody hell! Steve Jobs took the stage early this morning, I mean REAL early for those living on this side of the international dateline. As expected he finally pulled back the kimono on the Eurorpean iPhone model. The big surprise? It's not 3G! EDGE only. Didn't see that coming, especially when considering the fact that 3G is far more ubiquitous in the UK and European markets. In fact, less than one quarter of O2 customers are on EDGE. Blimey!

Other news to come out of this event; the UK iPhone will land on November 9. Apple will launch it's iTunes WiFi store later this month and preload the software on iPhone shortly thereafter. Realy quite a non-event, what? Quite.

iPhone Update Coming Soon? My Tipster Says...Uh Huh!

Hey, check this out. I heard from a guy who knows an Apple employee that heard a rumor from Steve Jobs's cleaning woman, that Apple is planning to rollout a big ass iPhone update (version 1.1) as soon as later today or tomorrow. What's in this update, you ask? Don't know. All I do know is that it has something to do with bringing iPod Touch features like iTunes WiFi Store and that Starbucks thingy to iPhone. But word is that bugfixes galore are also in store.

Be still, my heart.

AT&T Continues Billing Reign of Terror, I Can't Takes No More!

What is up with you, AT&T? Seriously, are you singling me out for some reason? Am I a special needs case? Didn't you announce to myself and the rest of the world that you would put an end to unnecessary paper carnage for iPhone data billing? More importantly, didn't I already disable printed invoicing in my account profile...months ago? So why do you do me like this?

Bill Maher Calls Me a Dipshit, and a Virgin. There Goes my Self-esteem

Bill Maher Calls Me a Dipshit, and a Virgin. There Goes my Self-esteem

Well known comedian, and marijuana advocate, Bill Maher humiliates iPhone fanboys still rabid over iPhone's $200 price cut. Maher goes on to call angry early adopters "dipshits" for having stood in line for a hours to buy a phone, and tells us to stop our bitching. His commentary is delightful and insulting, as always.

Sorry, Bill. I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome my iPhone is.

Shure SE Earphone Line Fits iPhone, No Adapter Needed. Huzzah!

Shure SE Earphone Line Fits iPhone, No Adapter Needed. Huzzah!

A reader informs me that Shure's new line of SE earphones is fully iPhone compatible right out of the box. Apparently Shure is bundling iPhone jacks with each model in this series, eliminating the need to purchase a separate $50 adapter.

A thoughtful touch considering these earbuds start at well over $120. Shure earphones rock, by the way. Totally!

[Thanks to Michael for the tip]

SummerBoard Themes Your Homescreen, Cures Boredom

Tired of the same default homescreen, and its OSX Dashboard motif? Bored with tapping the same icons over and over again? Well fire up your Community Source package, and let SummerBoard cure those homescreen blues.

This amazing app changes the look and feel of iPhone's default launcher, with a choice of four available themes. If you have Installer.app setup, just select SummberBoard from the list of source packages. After installed you will see a new icon on your homescreen called SMBPrefs. Tap that and pick a theme. It's just that simple.

360 Covers Both Pimp and Protect your iPhone

360 Covers Both Pimp and Protect your iPhone

I don't wear protection...on my iPhone. But if these crystal cases from 360 are as sick looking as photos portray, I may have to change my policy. These amazing looking clear plastic cases are available in an array of jaw dropping color patterns, priced at $19.99. For just a few bucks more, $24.99 to be exact, you can design your own color pattern.

Pretty sweet, I think. Anyone out there own one? Let us know your impressions.

Update: anySIM Bricked my iPhone. MOMMY!

Update: anySIM Bricked my iPhone. MOMMY!

Angels and ministers of grace defend me! My compulsion to beta test software has led to my iPhone's untimely demise. I installed anySIM from iPhone Dev Team, under the foolish assumption that it would work and do little harm to my dearly beloved. Everything seemed to be going fine until the unlock process completed. Then an error message popped up saying "Unlock Failed" and blathered on about not being able to update baseband settings.

anySIM: iPhone Unlocking for Dummies

anySIM: iPhone Unlocking for Dummies

We really need to pool our money and buy the guys (and gals) of iPhone Dev Team a free round of drinks; they never stop coding! The team is now offering a GUI solution (that's graphical user interface to you newbs out there) to its former iUnlock solution, called anySIM, making the process painless and tolerable. If this solution works as advertised, as it appears to, unlocking your iPhone can be done with just a few mouse clicks. I like the sound of that.

I plan on testing this out myself later today. Keep you posted.

Mein Gott! Deutsche Telekom Signs Exclusive Agreement with Apple - iPhone Kommen to Germany!

Reuters reports that German mobile operator Deutsche Telekom has signed an exclusive agreement with Apple, bringing iPhone to the land of bier and lederhosen. The terms of the deal remain undisclosed, but according to one source an announcement from both sides will come as early as next week.

Neither company is offering comments at this time, but when asked by reporters whether a partnership had been reached, a press agent for T-Mobile clicked his heals together, raised one arm in solute, and shouted "Jawohl!".

Apple Makes Good on Promise, Begins Offering $100 Store Credit to Early Adopters

Oh cheer up, guys. Sure it's only $100...but think of all the wondrous things you do with that trifling sum. Why, you can buy half an iPod. Or .0000001% of a MacBook Pro. Or a king's ransom in iTunes music. Har har.

Seriously though, I know this offer won't pacify all of my outspoken readers, but it's something anyway. Take the money, use it to buy yourself something nice, like an iPod or MacBook. Life is too short to fret over money. Go enjoy yourself, and have a nice weekend!
