Does Apple need an iPhone nano to stop the ultra-cheap Android invasion?

Does Apple need an iPhone nano to stop the ultra-cheap Android invasion?

Android is already the biggest iPhone competitor and if technology and emerging markets combine to create $100 off-contract Android phones, will Apple need an iPhone nano to keep both user and developer mindshare?

Seth Weintraub at Fortune kicked over this latest Android anthill with an article on how cheaper chipsets and Google strategy could align to make those $100 Android smartphones a reality, shoving the migration from feature phone to smartphone into overdrive. That's interesting in established markets like US and EU, where the idea of walking into a store, laying down very little cash, and walking out with a "good enough" handset, sans additional contract obligations, is a mainstream dream come true. In emerging markets in Asia and Africa, that's the gold mine. Forget a PC on every desk and in every home -- soon it will be a smartphone in every hand.

Apps that ask to be gifted: smart or obnoxious?

Apps that ask to be gifted: smart or obnoxious?

You buy a hot new game on super sale, wait for it to download, launch it, get all settled in to play, and then a box pops up saying "GIFT THIS GAME! Go to the iTunes App Store Now. Pull down the "Buy App" arrow and select "Gift This App". No, Thanks. YES." -- is that smart marketing on the part of the game company or an obnoxious intrusion into your gaming?

Fair exchange and helpful reminder for the cheap $0.99 or GIFT THIS GAME! and YES all caps, shouting at you?

When it comes to in-game popups asking you to gift the game, which is it? Smart or obnoxious?

Apple raises Q1 2011 iPhone shipments, includes Verizon/CDMA?

DigiTimes is claiming that, according to Taiwan based component suppliers, Apple has its iPhone shipment targets for the first quarter of 2011 from 19 million units to 20-21 million units. This would be up from their estimated 15.5 million units shipped in the fourth quarter of 2010. Additionally:

The first-quarter shipment goal for WCDMA iPhones has been adjusted from 13 million units to 14-15 million units, the sources said. The shipment goal for CDMA iPhones, which will be launched in North America and Asia Pacific in the first quarter, is set at 5-6 million units, the sources added.

redsn0w iOS 4.2.1 untethered Jailbreak "backup plan" released to beta testers [updated]

The iOS 4.2.1 untethered Jailbreak via redsn0w beta we posted about the other day is now good to go for testers. Again, this is not an untethered Jailbreak release it's just a beta that's buggy but, with testers' help and feedback, should get better and quick. Quoth the Dev Team:

How to use Cydia, the Jailbreak App Store

How to use Cydia, the Jailbreak App Store

Apple has the App Store, jailbreakers have the Cydia Store in addition to the default App Store. And if you want to be technical, Cydia was THE first App Store. It was available with iOS 1.x and allowed jailbreakers to download apps before the App Store even existed. Those who jailbroke their first generation iPhones on 1.x have seen several jailbreak ideas and concepts become parts of iOS. We would mention the other Jailbreak App Store, Rock, but seeing as Cydia acquired Rock, there's probably no point now.

Another term you may hear when it comes to Cydia is repos, or repositories. These are simply sources you add in the manage section. ModMyi and BigBoss are two of the largest. They are already added when you install Cydia. You are always welcome to add custom repos if you choose. I highly advise only adding repos from trusted sources. If you have a weird feeling about adding it, I'd probably pass.

For more information, check out our Jailbreak Starters Guide, and if you have any questions, get help in our Jailbreak Apps Forum.

Daily Tip: How to find out what iOS software and baseband version you're running

Interested in Jailbreaking and Unlocking your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad but can't determine which version of iOS you're running, or what your iPhone baseband (i.e. modem firmware) is? Just get a new device and not sure if it's been updated yet? Some Jailbreak methods only work with certain software versions and some Unlocks only work on certain modem firmware, so they're important to know before you start. Luckily they're easy to find. We'll show you where to look, after the break.
