iPhone 4.0: Spotlight searches Google and Wikipedia

Spotlight in iPhone 4.0 takes a %&@ good on-device search that could find your apps, contacts, and other personal data, and makes it a ^%^(&$ fantastic on-device and web-resource search that can also send text strings out to the internet -- spelled Google and Wikipedia and bring you back the results.

First, yes, Google is still the default search engine, so that coffee break obviously worked. Second, yes, those Wikipedia strings that were discovered in previous iPhone OS betas looks like they've finally surfaced.

50 million iPhones sold + 35 million iPod touches = 85 million iPhone OS devices

50 million iPhones sold + 35 million iPod touches = 85 million iPhone OS devices

Steve Jobs reported today that Apple had sold 50 million iPhones and 35 million iPod touch for a grand total of 85 million iPhone OS devices on the market (okay, 85,450,000 including the iPad).

Jobs said this was a great target for developers. He's right. No matter how many complaints there are about iPhone OS and Apple's stewardship thereof, that's a tremendous install base of devices that can pretty much all run the same OS (give or take a few features here or there) and same apps.

That's huge.

450,000 iPads sold, 600,000 iBooks, 3.5 million apps downloaded

As part of the iPhone 4.0 sneak preview event today, Steve Jobs announced some numbers about iPad sell-through to date (meaning Saturday to Thursday):

  • 450,000 iPads were sold. Best Buy was out of stock and Apple Retail was selling them as fast as they could get them.
  • 600,000 iBooks downloaded (which includes free Project Gutenberg titles, no doubt).
  • 3.5 million iPad apps download (ditto free apps).

Initial surge and early adoption or not, all in less than a week on the market has to be termed a success.

Reminder: We won't see all iPhone 4.0 features until WWDC in June

While Apple announced 7 tent-pole features for iPhone 4.0 including multitasking, folders, mail enhancements, iBooks, Enterprise features, Game Center social network, and iAd mobile advertising platform, it's important to remember we won't get the final feature set for iPhone 4.0 until Apple's World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) this June.

Last year Apple showed off a lot of features for iPhone 3.0 in March, but it wasn't until WWDC that we saw features specific to the new iPhone 3GS hardware -- video recording, VoiceOver, compass, Voice Memo app, etc.
