PlayStation Phone... is an Android app?!

PlayStation Phone... is an Android app?!

Engadget continues to rake in scoop after scoop on the "PlayStation Phone", which I deliberately place in quotes because it looks like what should be the PSPhone, the next technological marvel from the company that once brought us Walkman, is actually... an Android app.

No, that's not a joke. The PSPhone or PlayStation Phone or Zeus or whatever Sony ends up calling what should be their premiere mobile device runs on top of Google's Android platform. Android 3.0 Gingerbread to be precise.

That's awesome for a whole lot of reasons. It's a huge boost for Google and fantastic news for Android enthusiasts who want great gaming on the platform. (At least for those who are willing to use Sony Ericsson's version of it.) It's great for Apple iPhone lovers because strong competition breeds a better market for everyone. Who knows, maybe someday they'll even make a PlayStation app for iOS too. (I don't think they will but that won't stop me from dreaming about God of War and Grand Turismo on my iPad...)

It might even be great for Sony in the sense that it avoids them having to write a telephony stack and Smartphone OS from scratch, something they've never seriously undertaken on their own (they've previously used Android, Windows Mobile, and Symbian). It probably gets them to market faster, especially considering how slow to market they've been. (The iPhone was released in 2007, the App Store in 2008, and the PSPhone won't hit until 2011. That's positively glacier in modern terms).

iOS 4.2 bugs: Keyboard shortcuts glitchy on iPad?

Has iOS 4.2 made those nifty keyboard shortcuts we posted about a couple weeks ago just a little bit glitchy on your iPad? Being able to tap and slide to capital letters, numbers, symbols, etc. is a real time saver but several of our readers are telling us they're either not working at all, working but resulting in random input instead of the right character, or sometimes working and sometimes not.

I had the problem at first but it seems to have stopped after a reboot. If you're having the problem we have the usual advice to help you fix it, after the break.

Amplitube 2 for iPhone - App Review

Amplitube 2 for iPhone - App Review

Amplitube 2 by IK Multimedia is an awesome little app that allows you to convert your iPhone into a full on guitar rig. Their iPad version was recently featured in one of the new Apple iPad ads. The app has 3 versions currently - Amplitube Free, Amplitube LE ($2.99), and the full Amplitube version ($19.99). We are using the full version for this review to give you a complete picture of what's available.

To use this app, you'll need to purchase an iRig, which are currently priced at $39.99. You'll simply plug your guitar or bass into the iRig which then plugs into your iPhone or iPad. The 3rd outlet allows you to plug into the audio output of your choice. We just used a standard surround system (receiver) for this review. You're also free to use an amp or headphones, which can be great if you'd like to practice quietly. And hey, it's a lot easier to carry around the iRig than an entire guitar rig.

Theme artists Zausser and K. Nitsua presents iNitsua Z Twilight HD for iPhone 4 [Jailbreak]

From the expert theme designers of Xhd and iNSPIRED comes iNitsua Z Twilight HD for the iPhone 4. Zausser and K. Nitsua have created a breathtaking Retina quality theme that skins every UI element of the iPhone 4 from the keypad to the SMS messaging interface. This full featured theme is to be used on Jailbroken iPhones with the Winterboard app and comes with numerous weather widgets, animated lock screen themes, pin entry skins, and even comes with a non Retina port for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. iNitusa Z Twilight HD is available on Cydia for $2.99.

As with all of Zausser and K. Nitsua's themes, most of the fun is derived from customization. iNitsua Z Twilight HD comes with PSDs to easily customize different aspects of the theme and to make your own custom icons. There is already a large library of user made add on packs that allow you to change the color schemes, install different weather widgets and lock screens, iAccess keyboard skins, or add custom icon and SBSetting packs.

Check out the stunning pictures after the break but keep in mind that Retina quality themes look much better on a Retina display than on your computer screen. Excited about all the HD theme's coming to the iPhone 4? Questions about Winterboard and theme customization? Leave us a comment or visit our Jailbreak forums!

Air Video for iPhone, iPad updated with multitasking and retina display support

Air Video, a fantastic app that can transcode and stream video content from your Windows PC or Mac straight to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, has just been updated to include support for multitasking and Retina display.

Your Windows PC or Mac needs a small piece of software installed to communicate with your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad but once setup you can stream native iOS video content (MP4 and M4V) instantly to your device (rather than having to sync it over first via iTunes). Air Video will convert non-supported video formats (AVI, MKV, etc) and either store them for later streaming or stream them on the fly so you can watch now rather than waiting for later.

Incipio underGround Case for iPad - accessory review

Incipio underGround Case for iPad - accessory review

If you're looking for a sleeve case for your iPad, the Incipio underGround Case may be for you. It's envelope design gives it an urban feel while offering protection for your precious iPad.

The outside is made from a wool/felt textured material and feels great in your hands. The micro-suede inside gives your iPad a scratch-free environment. The sleeve provides a snug fit, so pairing it with another case is likely impossible.

There isn't much else to say about Incipio underGround case because of it's simple design - which in this case (no pun intended), is a good thing. If you're an iPad user who prefers to use the device in it's naked state, I recommend heading over the TiPb iPad accessory store and checking the Incipio underGround Case out.

Is iPad 4.2 a whole new iPad? [Round table]

Last week Apple finally brought iOS 4 -- technically iOS 4.2.1 -- to the iPad along with multitasking, folders, unified inbox, threaded email, AirPlay, AirPrint, and a slew of other long-demanded features. Apple considered the 4.2.1 update enough to make you feel like you got a whole new iPad.

Well, following up on our original iPad review, we asked a bunch of Smartphone Experts and TiPb editors and writers what they thought of iOS 4.2.1.

New Michael Jackson song available exclusively on Ping

New Michael Jackson song available exclusively on Ping

A new song from the late Michael Jackson has hit the net, but the only place you can currently grab the track is on Apple's Ping social network. The track will be exclusive to Ping for the next week, followed by the subsequent release of his full record on December 14th.

It's interesting to see the track being made available on Ping before MJ fans can grab it anywhere else. Hopefully this will give Ping a boost, as the social service hasn't picked up too much traction since its debut in early September.

Any Michael Jackson fans planning on downloading this new tune? Let us know in the comments!

Zero Punctuation on iPhone games [NSFW video]

Zero Punctuation takes a break from lambasting the latest console games for a brief look at Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Fruit Ninja and a few other popular iPhone titles. If you're familiar with Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw's style, then you know you're in for incredibly not-safe-for-work (NSFW) language and graphic cartoon subject matter. Be warned.
