iPhone 2.0 is Live: Start your Updates NOW!

You can grab the 2.0 update a little early, MacRumors notes, you can grab it directly by downloading this file from Apple. Let's get it on!

Note: since this is a separate file, make sure you're backed up to iTunes before you start, this full update will erase all your data and you'll need to have your data backed up in order to restore afterwards.

Apples Releases iPhone Config Utilities

Apples Releases iPhone Config Utilities

The hits just keep on coming this morning. Next up, TUAW noticed a few new downloads on Apple.com - specifically they're iPhone configuration utilities that look to be the perfect tool (until there's OTA setup) for administrators in companies that have deployed iPhones. There's a web utility for both Mac and Windows and also a more powerful Mac utility. The basic idea here is you set up a simple file (just XML) with certain settings like:

iPhone 3G: 1 Day and Counting Down to the Next Great Computing Platform!

iPhone 3G: 1 Day and Counting Down to the Next Great Computing Platform!

This is it. We're in the home stretch. 99 meters down and 1 left to go, all or nothing, and Steve Jobs has just tapped into the speed force. Tomorrow we find out if Apple crosses the finish line first, the two-peat for greatest smartphone (even gadget) in the world, or if they trip themselves up with their mostly evolutionary, not so much revolutionary, next generation handset.

Saturday we mentioned one big change: the fast 3G data chip. Sunday it was GPS. Monday we tackled the 2.0 Firmware update. Tuesday we detailed the rebirth of .Mac: MobileMe. Wednesday we hit the mother load, App Store. Today we pull it all together and look at the iPhone 3G, the next great computing platform.

Why am I calling it that? Read on to find out!

iTunes Uses Bonjour to Announce Itself to Apple Remotes

iTunes Uses Bonjour to Announce Itself to Apple Remotes

This will come as a surprise to precisely no-one, but it looks like iTunes announces itself over Bonjour when you turn on "Look for iPhone and iPod Touch remotes" under the advanced preferences. Above are my iTunes Remote details that popped up in Bonjour Browser after I clicked the iTunes' check box.

Sadly, there are no remotes to read the signal just now, but it does seem likely that some enterprising hackers may someday be able to use this info to hack together iTunes remotes for other platforms besides iPhone 2.0. Because, you know, there are still going to be people out there that don't use the iPhone. :D

iTunes 7.7 Live! 500 Apps! 90% Under $10! 25% Free! + Jobs Speaks!

iTunes 7.7 Live! 500 Apps! 90% Under $10! 25% Free! + Jobs Speaks!

Steve Jobs only speaks to the media when he has to, when he launches an iPod, the iPhone, the MacBook Air... the App Store. Here's what he just said to USA Today:

"This is the biggest launch of my career."

From the man who brought us the Apple II and the Mac? Really? That's a lot of faith in what some are calling the next major platform. And it looks like Jobs isn't taking any chances. Heck, it looks like he's positively stacking the deck:

500 Apps in the Store at launch. 450 of them under $10. 125 of them FREE.

Mobile Me Officially Live

Good morning iPhone lovers! Remember when you were a child and you discovered your parents' secret hiding place for your Chrismas presents? You spend a few agonizing minutes (ok, seconds) debating whether or not to peek at what you'd get and then, yes, you peeked. Today's going to be like that. If you haven't yet, it's time to fire up iTunes and check for an update because, yes, 7.7 is here with the App store and ready for download. More on that in a bit.

What's Black and White and All Over AT&T? iPhone 3G!

Yup, iPhone 3G is in the hizzy! Looks like AT&T is getting crazy massive stock of both the 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3G Black, not to mention the exclusive 16GB iPhone 3G White -- in elegant white boxes no less -- as well.

Anyone seeing similar in their countries? Or is the USA hoarding the special editions? Let us know!

Non-Disclosure Expiring? [Redacted] Retracted? App Store to Launch Today?!

Since the iPhone SDK launch in March, developers accepted into the program have been bound via NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) to Apple-institutionalized uber-secrecy (leading one noted developer to cleverly refer to the SDK as [REDACTED] on Twitter). Tech Crunch says, like .Mac, that may end later today:

Fake Steve Gets Steved: Dan Lyons Retires the Parody Postings

It's the end of the blogsphere as we know it, and dagnabit I don't feel fine. Why? Fake Steve is retiring. Former Forbes columnist Dan Lyons, who once panned bloggers and later rose to internet stardom after being exposed as one of the most infamous -- and best in some opinions -- bloggers of them all, is heading to Newsweek and will be switching his posting over to his own name. No doubt his content will continue to be razor sharp and wickedly insightful -- if not inciting -- but Fake Steve has become such an icon of the Web 2.0 age that I can't help but think the loss of Dear Leader, El Jobso, the wake-and-baker himself will leave the net just a little emptier.

iPhone 3G to KO Blackberry in Ultimate Smartphone Championships?

iPhone 3G to KO Blackberry in Ultimate Smartphone Championships?

ChangeWave is back with trends in intended smartphone buying for June 2008. The good? The iPhone has soared from 29% to 56% from a low this time last year of 18%. The bad? Rim has tumbled from 29% to 23% from a high of 33% last July. The ugly? Palm has held steady at 3%, having free fallen from 24% way back in late 2006.

The iPhone dominated almost all rounds, causing an overall increase in planned smartphone purchases to 10%. Satisfaction levels were through the roof at 78% (way above RIM's 54% and trouncing Palm's 29%)

Blackberry held on to the title of reigning email monster, with a holding-steady 42% ownership of that space, but Apple is making inroads even there, up to 11%.

With the second coming of the iPhone at our doorsteps (3G for those of you living in a cave), there has been an intriguing amount of comparison between the "old" iPhone 2G and the shiny new 3G Wonder.  The coming of 2.0 and the App Store has everyone a-twitter, but lest we forget, there are still a plethora of web-based apps out there that are just darn good and useful.  This week's Tip, courtesy of Fiona King and currencytrading.net (a BIG thanks, Fiona!), is all about helpful financial apps for the iPhone.  Read on, friends!
