How to get Faces to sync between multiple computers in Photos for OS X

How to get Faces to sync between multiple computers in Photos for OS X

Your Faces album won't sync across your computers — but there's another way to see that collection across your devices.

I like being able to see images of certain family members at a glance — it's helpful for building birthday cards, for instance, or finding great blackmail photos — and it's why I've always loved the Faces feature.

But with Photos for OS X, your tagged Faces won't sync between your Macs — they live, siloed, on the machine where you first tagged them.

This is silly, and something I hope Apple fixes in the next Photos for OS X update. Until they does so, however, you're not completely out of organizational luck: There's a sneaky work-around to get those tagged photos to sync to your other computers.

Apple Watch and accessibility: First impressions

Apple Watch and accessibility: First impressions

Thanks to my awesome girlfriend, I was fortunate to take delivery of an Apple Watch on April 24.

Like others, I've spent the last few weeks trying to understand it and figure out how it fits into my life. So far, Apple Watch has left me very pleased overall.

The fact that I'm so pleased with Apple Watch is a bit surprising. I admit that I was skeptical of the Watch when it was first announced, at least in usability terms. From an accessibility standpoint, I wondered how I could cope with such a small display and the digital crown. Even the seemingly mundane task of putting on and taking off the Watch was concerning. In short, I had a lot of questions.

How the Apple Watch can help battle your iPhone addiction

How the Apple Watch can help battle your iPhone addiction

I ordered an Apple Watch to help me track health and fitness data. Almost a month into using it, however, I'm finding its best feature is that it keeps me off my iPhone and iPad.

Smartphone usage has gotten completely out of hand, though I doubt that's breaking news to anyone. Whether you're sitting at home with your significant other or you're out with friends, you'll see smartphones popping up almost everywhere you look. The time we should spend talking and communicating with one another is instead spent behind glowing screens filled with Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, RSS feeds, and YouTube.

I don't think we mean to get as engrossed as we do, but it happens. I'm guilty of it myself. My iPhone buzzes or beeps and instinct tells me to reach for it. I only intend to respond to a single message, but Twitter grabs my attention, or an incoming email pulls me further down the rabbit hole. It's over; I've checked out of the conversation happening around me.

Apple Watch bands and accessibility

Apple Watch bands and accessibility

With the Apple Watch, accessibility is built into more than just the software — it's in the bands as well.

While it has a bevy of software-based accessibility features, the Apple Watch also offers significant hardware accessibility as well. Whether it was intentional or just the result of good, usable design being accessible, there are several Apple Watch bands especially that are exceptionally easy to put on and adjust.

How to type Spock's Vulcan salute emoji with your Apple Watch

Once you've gotten the 'live long and prosper' emoji onto your iPhone, the next step is getting it onto your Apple Watch!

The Apple Watch 1.0.1 update brings the Apple Watch into emoji parity with iOS 8.3 on the iPhone. That means it can display all the new diversity emoji sent from iOS devices, but can also send the default versions back. The Vulcan salute, however, isn't included in Apple's emoji keyboard. But if you've set up a text shortcut for it on your iPhone, you're only one step away from Messaging with it on your Apple Watch as well!

How to update the Watch OS software on your Apple Watch

Watch OS updates are handled through the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

Apple Watch software updates are similar to iPhone software updates. Because the Apple Watch is paired to the iPhone for internet access and easy device management, however, Watch OS updates aren't done directly on the Apple Watch. Instead, they're done using the Apple Watch for iPhone app. To get started, make sure you have your iPhone ready and on Wi-Fi, and your Apple Watch is charged to 50% or more and connected to its magnetic charger.
