Apple Integrates iPhone Support Into iLife '08 and .Mac

Apple Integrates iPhone Support Into iLife '08 and .Mac

In addition to the big iMac announcement, Apple also made a few lesser but greater iLife feature introductions that could have a big impact on iPhone users - those who use Macs anyway.

iMovie '08 now enables video to be encoded and formatted for iPhone's native screen resolution (HVGA). So now you can view your home videos on any iPhone, and share them with other iPhone users.

That's not all. iPhoto '08 offers a new .Mac Web Gallery service for uploading and sharing photos from a Mac, PC, or...iPhone! So iPhone users can now upload images captured from the phone right to a .Mac account. Pretty nifty, eh? Of course you'll have to pony $100 to purchase a .Mac account, and oh yes, a new iMac wouldn't hurt.

So goeth the upgrade treadmill.

Apple Rolls Out New iMacs, iLife Suite

Apple Rolls Out New iMacs, iLife Suite

Moments ago Steve Jobs introduced Apple's new iMac line to the press, ending months of rumors and speculation. The new iMac scarcely differs in overall form of its predecessor, but sports a completely new enclosure designed from aluminum and glass, which gives the appearance of a Cinema Display on steroids.

As expected, Apple has axed the previously available 17" entry-level model and replaced it with a 20" unit starting at $1,199. A beefier midrange model is available for $1,499, with a 24" gut buster rounding out the high end at $1,799.

Overall it's a good looking product with credible specs, but I have to say I wasn't knocked out of my socks upon seeing this new design, though it probably looks sexier in person. But then again I am a "Pro" customer so the iMac isn't targetted towards my demographic anyway.

An Apple A Day Won't Keep This Doctor Away

An Apple A Day Won't Keep This Doctor Away

A Des Moines Iowa physician, Peter V. Boesen, has filed a patent suit against Apple, claiming copyright infringement over iPhone's onscreen keyboard. Boesen holds a patent through a company called SP Technologies, who claims to have held a patent on iPhone's technology since 2004.

The irony in this story is that Mr. Boesen is currently sentenced to 51 months in a federal penitentiary on healthcare fraud charges. I guess Dr. Boesen never heard the phrase "Physician, heal thyself".

My prescription for the good Doctor is to take two cyanide pills and call me in the morning.

Windows Gets a File Browser for iPhone

1

Windows Gets a File Browser for iPhone

ModMyiPhone is living up to its name. A haxor developer nicknamed "Cranium" has created a Windows-based File browser that enables users to access and transfer files directly to the iPhone, in mounted fashion, bypassing the sync process.

Unfortunately this is a quick and dirty application created in visual basic express. There is no installer and you'll need .Net libs to make the magic happen. But if you do manage to fill these requirements, you'll be rewarded with a window to your iPhone that allows full drag and drop support, Right-click save as, Auto previews, file backups, etc. The usual fare.

Finally! A reason to use Windows! Nah.

iSectomy: Man Undergoes Vasectomy to Receive iPhone

This story is so disturbing it simply MUST be true. A reader sent me his personal story of what lengths (excuse the pun) he went through to get an 8GB iPhone. There are many things I would do for an insanely great Apple product...this is not among them.

W00tNess! New Parallels Desktop Beta Supports iPhone

Parallels is beta testing a new release of its desktop virtualization software that incorporates iPhone syncing with XP and Vista. Now you're probably asking yourself "Why the hell would I want to sync my iPhone with a Windows virtual machine on a Mac?" And honestly, other than perhaps the same reason my Doberman Pinscher licks his genitals, I can't think of one good reason. But it's nice to know the option is there should I choose to utilize it, right?

Among the added features in this release...

File this under "Too good to be true", but one commenter and two other people emailing me claim that AT&T salespeople unlocked their iPhones after canceling service. Sound credible to you? Me neither. But according to a user named RAJ...

David Adams Chronicles His Month With iPhone

David Adams from OSNews.com wrote a lengthy and very interesting seven page review of the iPhone and shares his experiences with the device after one month of use. He seems to have grown quite fond of it (haven't we all?) and sees Apple capturing a sizable chunk of the cellular market.

iPhone User Incurs $3,000 Roaming Charges from AT&T

iPhone User Incurs $3,000 Roaming Charges from AT&T

Dave Stolte had a nasty surprise in store for him, upon returning from a trip to Eurorpe (with his iPhone) - a $3,000 bill from AT&T. It seems David learned the hard way that AT&T does not offer international roaming with its iPhone data plans.

Two weeks of travel with sporadic AT&T EDGE network usage off and on mixed with wifi when available... $3000. Doing some research, I learned this morning that AT&T offers unlimited international data usage at $70 per month to its Blackberry customers. Here's my bottom line: I want this same usage plan to be made available to iPhone customers and to be applied retroactively to my account.

Apple Releases iPhone Update 1.0.1

Apple Releases iPhone Update 1.0.1

Gentlemen, start your downloading! Upon docking my iPhone I nearly spewed Coke Zero through my nostrils when a message popped up alerting me to a firmware update for iPhone, version 1.0.1. According to the documentation this is almost entirely a bug fix and little else. Correction It's a security fix for several recently published Safari vulnerabilities.

Bummer. I was expecting some value added goodness.

UPDATE: Apple has posted documentation for this update here.

UPDATE 2: Since installing this update the Mail app has become alarmingly unstable. It seems to freeze up often. On the plus side IMAP folder support appears to have improved, allowing full server-side folder browsing. Nice, but I can do without the crashy crashy.

Plusmo Announces iPhone Support, Plus a Buttload of Widgets

What better way to waste spend your time than downloading thousands of Widgets, slideshows, gamecasts, and feeds right on your iPhone. Plusmo offers a very simple iconic web frontend that delivers easy access to online content, suited for mobile devices. It works very similar to another online mobile content service called Widsets.

Plusmo goes a bit further my creating a homescreen-like interface and enabling web content developers and bloggers (that would be me) to create one-click publishing links that allow users to quickly subscribe to your mobilized content.

And like so many other Web 2.0 services...this one is free!
