iOS apps growing faster than iTunes music?

iOS apps growing faster than iTunes music?

Both iTunes Store music and iOS App Store apps are being downloaded at an increasing rate. Apps are just increasing faster.

As can be seen, the App store has reached the same total downloads in 2.2 years as the iTMS reached after five years. The two curves are likely to be the same height (around 13 billion each) before the year is over.

I'm downloading far more apps than music, what about you?

Final Freeway - app review

I have seen Final Freeway in the App Store for a while and just glanced by. When looking at apps to review this week I felt a little nostalgic and thought I would give this little gem a spin. The result? Well, if you enjoy old-school arcade racing, if you remember when Out Run was the arcade game, then Final Freeway is for you!

iPod nano not iPod OS, not iOS, something new?

30

iPod nano not iPod OS, not iOS, something new?

Is it possible the new iPod nano isn't running iOS, but isn't running the old iPod OS, either? The latest firmware has hit Apple's servers so developers are tearing into it and here's what Steven Troughton-Smith had to say on Twitter:

The nano codename is N20 it appears; also labelled as "1.0" of the OS. Definitely not iOS

Rusty Mercury also says it's running on a Samsung S5L8723, a step up from the previous Samsung S5L8723.

So what is this OS 1.0? something new? Something hybrid?

iTunes 10 features: Listen to music on someone else's iPhone, iPad

If you've ever wanted to plug in your friend's iPhone, iPad or iPod touch into your computer to listen to their music, 9to5 Mac points out that today is your lucky day. Doing so will grant you access to all of the music on that iOS device to play via iTunes 10 without having to enable manually manage music mode.

Just don't expect to be able to export the music files to your computer...

Updated: Apple resets Game Center in advance of iOS 4.1 launch

Looks like Apple has just reset Game Center, their new social gaming network, and any developers testing the service on the Gold Master (GM) seed are now greeted with a "create new account" screen. Moreover, all existing Friends are gone, meaning if you intend to keep connected when iOS 4.1 goes live this week, you'll have to send and approve your friend requests all over again.

That is, if Apple doesn't reset it again before launch. But that's what development builds are for, right?

No HDR photography for iPhone 3G/iPhone 3GS?

While we won't know for absolutely certain until the final release version of iOS 4.1 for iPhone arrives sometime this week (maybe Wednesday), it's looking like HDR photography will be exclusive to iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4, and not available for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users.

Overboard vs Aquapac in iPhone 4 water torture test - Amazing Case [give away]

Overboard vs Aquapac in iPhone 4 water torture test - Amazing Case [give away]

If you had to trust a water-proof case to protect your precious iPhone 4 during a torture test, which would it be -- the Overboard or the Aquapac? That's the challenge they gave me for the latest episode of TiPb's Amazing Case, our hardcore, case vs case tests of strength, durability, and performance.

We figure if either -- or both -- of these water cases could survive being thrown into the deep end and taken through the high-pressure car wash then they can survive a dip in the tub or day at the beach.

Follow on after the jump for the details, and the give-away!

iOS 4.1 review

iOS 4.1 review

Complete review of Apple's iOS 4.1 software update for iPhone and iPod touch

iOS 4.1 is now available from Apple for iPhone and iPod touch. A relative small update to iOS 4 that fixes some important bugs, adds a few new features, and powers the all new iPod touch 4.

Steve Jobs announced the headlines during Apple's 2010 special music event and they include Game Center social gaming network, TV rentals, iTunes Ping social music network, HDR photography, and HD video uploads. (Yes, Apple is introducing not one but two new social networks.)

More importantly for some, proximity sensor misfires, Bluetooth woes, and the abysmal performance on iPhone 3G appear to be fixed.

We'll be covering all of that and more below. For anything and everything that hasn't changed, check out our massive iOS 4 walkthrough because we won't be repeating all that here

Note: this walkthrough is based on the GM (gold master) version of iOS 4.1. We'll continue to add to and improve it as needed, and update once iOS 4.1 release version hits, probably on Wednesday September 8.
