YES! It has begun! New Zealand has the iPhone 3G! Officially on sale as of 12:01 AM local time, the Kiwi's are the first to grab up Stevo's 2nd generation mobile platform.

Shoppers, start your engines. From Oceania, the iPhone will start lighting up Asia, Africa, Europe, East Coast North America, West Coast North America, and finally Hawaii as its march across the globe -- and total Risk triumph concludes. (Well, except for holdouts China and Russia).

Note: since this is a separate file, make sure you're backed up to iTunes before you start, this full update will erase all your data and you'll need to have your data backed up in order to restore afterwards.

The hits just keep on coming this morning. Next up, TUAW noticed a few new downloads on Apple.com - specifically they're iPhone configuration utilities that look to be the perfect tool (until there's OTA setup) for administrators in companies that have deployed iPhones. There's a web utility for both Mac and Windows and also a more powerful Mac utility. The basic idea here is you set up a simple file (just XML) with certain settings like:

This is it. We're in the home stretch. 99 meters down and 1 left to go, all or nothing, and Steve Jobs has just tapped into the speed force. Tomorrow we find out if Apple crosses the finish line first, the two-peat for greatest smartphone (even gadget) in the world, or if they trip themselves up with their mostly evolutionary, not so much revolutionary, next generation handset.

Saturday we mentioned one big change: the fast 3G data chip. Sunday it was GPS. Monday we tackled the 2.0 Firmware update. Tuesday we detailed the rebirth of .Mac: MobileMe. Wednesday we hit the mother load, App Store. Today we pull it all together and look at the iPhone 3G, the next great computing platform.

Why am I calling it that? Read on to find out!

This will come as a surprise to precisely no-one, but it looks like iTunes announces itself over Bonjour when you turn on "Look for iPhone and iPod Touch remotes" under the advanced preferences. Above are my iTunes Remote details that popped up in Bonjour Browser after I clicked the iTunes' check box.

Sadly, there are no remotes to read the signal just now, but it does seem likely that some enterprising hackers may someday be able to use this info to hack together iTunes remotes for other platforms besides iPhone 2.0. Because, you know, there are still going to be people out there that don't use the iPhone. :D

I just told you today would be like peeking at your Christmas presents early and Rene just told you that iTunes 7.7 is live. Put those two things together and what ydo you get? Why, you get the ability to browse and download iPhone apps today. Once you have iTunes 7.7 installed, just use this handy tip from MacRumors:

1. Search for "aol"
2. Click on the AOL iPhone App.
3. Use the breadcrumbs at the top go get to the app store .

Steve Jobs only speaks to the media when he has to, when he launches an iPod, the iPhone, the MacBook Air... the App Store. Here's what he just said to USA Today:

"This is the biggest launch of my career."

From the man who brought us the Apple II and the Mac? Really? That's a lot of faith in what some are calling the next major platform. And it looks like Jobs isn't taking any chances. Heck, it looks like he's positively stacking the deck:
