Redsn0w (0.9.6 Beta2) updated to allow Custom IPSW installation with Windows

Redsn0w (0.9.6 Beta2) updated to allow Custom IPSW installation with Windows

Redsn0w -- the lightweight, multi-platform jailbreaking, unlocking and customizing tool for the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 1G, iPod touch 2G, and iPod touch 3G -- has been updated to 0.9.6 Beta2, which allows Custom IPSW installation with Windows. Missing from this update is iPad and AppleTV support, which is currently supported by pwnagetool for OSX, but word is that chpwn is working on a windows version of pwnagetool.

Redsn0w can be used to install custom IPSWs that will keep your baseband firmware from updating and allowing you to unlock with ultrasn0w. Redsn0w works by putting your device into a special DFU mode which is required for installation of custom IPSWs.

Win an iPad from Waze and TiPb!

Win an iPad from Waze and TiPb!

Between now and November 10th, we're partnering with Waze to give away an iPad (or a Galaxy Tab if you're feeling Android-y). Here's how it works:

  1. Download and install Waze from the App Store
  2. Drive around with Waze and collect "Road Goodies" - which basically just means drive over the TiPb logos as you move about your city. As you can see above, they are *everywhere*.
  3. It's a competition between iPhone users, Android users, and BlackBerry users - which is to say you're up against the kids from Android Central and CrackBerry.com. Whichever site whose users collect the most Road Goodies will win and be able to give a tablet away to one of their users - selected randomly from amongst the top 25 collectors. Remember - you only get credit for driving over the iPhone icons.
  4. That's it! Use Waze, collect Road Goodies, and stick it to those Android and BlackBerry users while automatically getting a chance to win an iPad or Tab

What's Waze, then? It's a free social mapping tool: you can get directions, find out where the traffic is, ping other users, and generally find your way around while helping other Waze users get better location and traffic information. Check out the full details on the Waze Blog and check out the demo after the break to see a bit more about how Waze works.

iPhone DST alarm clock bug hits Europe

iPhone DST alarm clock bug hits Europe

Remember that annoying DST bug that was affecting Australian iPhone users' alarm clocks? Well, now it's Europe's turn. The switch from Daylight Saving Time to Standard time happened last night and now many European iPhone users woke up late this morning.

Even though the iPhones are correctly changing the clock time, recurring alarms are not recognizing it. What's even stranger, is that not all alarms are affected. If the alarm is set for "every day" or "never", then the alarm will go off at the correct time.

Crush the Castle for the iPhone a strategy game

Crush the Castle for the iPhone a strategy game

Crush the Castle for iPhone is a simple and fun strategy game. The object of Crush the Castle is to destroy buildings with trebuchets -- a fancy siege engine something like a catapult. You get the chance to be the attacking army and, as a twist, you can even build your own structures and destroy them as well.

The game interface is very easy to get used to. You tap the screen to launch the trebuchet and then again when you want the ammunition to be released. The you watch to see if your ammunition has hit its target. You get to pass the level when all of the occupants of the building have been killed. (Yes, this game is not for the pacifist.)

Updated: If you want VLC for iPhone, iPad get it now before it's pulled

Updated: If you want VLC for iPhone, iPad get it now before it's pulled

Looks like VLC for iPhone and iPad is about to be pulled from the App Store because the Open Source Powers That Be don't believe Apple's iTunes App Store is compatible with the GPL components of the app.

Basically, anything under the GPL has to be freely transferable to anyone without restriction. Since the App Store places FairPlay DRM even on free apps like VLC, even though anyone can still download them, that's considered a restriction.

The long and the short of it is this -- if you want VLC for iPhone or iPad, go get it now.
