Apple briefly bigger than Exxon

Apple's market cap briefly rose higher than Exxon today, temporarily making Apple the most valuable company in the world.

Whether or not Apple again rises above Exxon, and whether or not they manage to stay that way for a while, it's still a huge milestone for a once-struggling tech company unsure if it could remain in business, let alone surpass the glories of their past.

Congrats

Apple still intent on intervening in Lodsys developer lawsuits

When patent troll Lodsys started suing App Store developers, Apple filed a motion to intervene on developers' behalf and, not surprisingly, Lodsys objected. So now Apple has doubled down, insisting on a hearing and answering all of Lodsys' objections. If the court sides with Apple, Lodsys won't be staring at independent legals teams of assorted sizes. They'll be stared down by Apple legal.

Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents breaks down Apple's 6 areas of response, which he says "tears into pieces" Lodsys' arguments. He sums up:

Apple number one portable maker... if you count iPad

That rocket ship-like Apple uptake in the chart above occurs when you count iPad along with notebooks as one, giant portable market. If you don't count it, Apple falls behind the likes of Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Samsung.

While no doubt debate will continue to rage over just how to meld the PC and post-PC categories, and the tablet iPad market, Deutsche Bank's Chris Whitmore mass t

How to smuggle iPhone, iPad back into China if all you have are crossbows and cables

How to smuggle iPhone, iPad back into China if all you have are crossbows and cables

Dayliss and YCWB report that McGyver-like Chinese smugglers have taken to using ingenious cable and pulley systems, launched from home-spun crossbows and catapults, to smuggle iPhones and iPads back into China. M.I.C. Gadget sums up:

The iPad and iPhones were transported over a small river that separates the booming city of Shenzhen from the rural northern part of Hong Kong using an elaborate pulley system. The cable was shot across the border using a crossbow and the Apple products were flying across at night, which store in black nylon bags. The cable was suspended to a high-rise building in the Chinese border town of Shenzhen, and goods were moved several hundred meters from a small village house located in Hong Kong

No word on whether or no Jackie Chan or Chris Tucker were instrumental in helping Chinese and Hong Kong customs crack the smuggling ring, but we have our suspicions!

Google+ app updated, can now be installed on iPad, iPod touch support (?!)

Google+ app updated, can now be installed on iPad, iPod touch support (?!)

Google has just updated its Google+ iOS app, claiming it now supports the iPad and iPod touch. Sure it works fine on the iPod touch but incredibly Google's "iPad support" comes not in the form of a universal binary with proper, native iPad UI, but simply the ability to now install the Google+ iPhone app on the iPad and run it either windowed or in fuzzy 2x mode. Such a disappointment! On a brighter note, if you're a developer, it does now work with the iOS 5 beta!

Other new features in the update are improved Huddle settings and aggregated circle notifications.
