AirPlay hacks: AirFlick, Air Video Server, XBMC, live conversion, DVDs, DRM, screencasts

Erica Sadun from TUAW is relentlessly prosecuting her AirPlay and Apple TV hacks with a whole series of posts that include turning your Mac into an AirPlay server via the AirFlick app, transcoding AVI and other non-Apple supported videos for use with Airplay, running AirPlay on an XBMC Linux box, playing DVDs on Apple TV via AirPlay, playing iTunes FairPlay DRM protected videos, and sending Mac screencasts to Apple TV. Yeah. Phew.

A lot of this is strictly alpha and proofs of concept at this point and requires a good amount of ninja level skill to implement, but if that's the way you like your hacks, head on over and try them out:

Apple Stores merry with FaceTime Santa displays

Adding to the endless Beatles loops and festive iPad snow globes, Apple Stores now have their very own FaceTime Santa in the windows, spreading Christmas cheer to boys, girls, families, elves, and Mrs. Clause alike.

I caught this one on video at my local Apple Store tonight. Have you seen FaceTime Santa at yours yet? Any idea how he explains to the kids that they can indeed have an iPhone 4 under the tree but they have to ask daddy and mommy to foot the bill for the monthly voice and data plans?

Ho. Ho. Ho.

Apple releases iPhone Configuration Utility 3.2 for Mac

Apple today released version 3.2 of their iPhone Configuration Utility for Mac OS X. If you're familiar with the utility you likely already know what it does, but for anyone curious:

iPhone Configuration Utility lets you easily create, maintain, encrypt, and install configuration profiles, track and install provisioning profiles and authorized applications, and capture device information including console logs.

Configuration profiles are XML files that contain device security policies, VPN configuration information, Wi-Fi settings, APN settings, Exchange account settings, mail settings, and certificates that permit iPhone and iPod touch to work with your enterprise systems.

So IT departments and network admins, go get it!

Will Android phones ever achieve iPhone's level of polish and usability?

Will Android phones ever achieve iPhone's level of polish and usability?

Current Instapaper and former Tumblr developer Marco Arment wonders out loud if Google Android phones can ever achieve the levels of usability and polish Apple's iPhone has arguably had since day one:

Android will continue to exhibit what Google does best: great low-level engineering and tight integration with Google’s other services. But it’s never going to be Apple-like in user experience, polish, or design.

Attention to detail, like most facets of truly good design, can’t be (and never is) added later. It’s an entire development philosophy, methodology, and culture.

How to rearrange app icons to customize your iPhone or iPad Home screen

How to rearrange app icons to customize your iPhone or iPad Home screen

The iPhone and iPad Home screen is an app launcher — it contains a grid of icons that represent all the apps on your device, and if you tap one, you launch the app. The iPhone and iPad come with a full suite of Apple apps built-in, but you can add many, many more through the App Store. Once you have a bunch of apps, however, you might want to change the way they're organized. For example, if you use Facebook a lot you might want to put that on the front page. If you use Camera a lot and Phone not very much, maybe you want to switch its place in the dock? Luckily, iOS makes it easy to organize your apps just the way you want!

TiPb TV 9: Should you wait for the Verizon iPhone?

Should you wait for the legendary Verizon iPhone? Or rather, who should wait for the hotly anticipated Verizon iPhone, and who should get an AT&T iPhone or Verizon BlackBerry or Android phone now? Ever since the Verizon rumors picked up speed and 2011 seemed like the year we'd finally see the Big Red iPhone, that's the question more and more readers have been asking us, and it's the subject of the latest episode of our new, conversational video show, TiPb TV!

Is AT&T the best carrier in your area or is Verizon better? Do you have time left on your contract or is it up now, or did you just lose or break your phone and need a new one urgently? We're still not 100% sure if much less when -- January, April, June, later? -- the Verizon iPhone will land, so how badly do you need a phone and how badly do you need it to be the iPhone? Watch along and we'll help you decide!

WikiLeaks App for iPhone gets pulled from the App Store

Well it was a good short run for developer Igor Barinov and his WikiLeaks application but Apple has officially pulled it from the App Store just four short days after first approving it. I wouldn't expect to see it back anytime in the future.

TiPb asks: What tech gift do you want for the holidays?

iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, Xbox Kinnect, PlayStation Move, Jambox, Nexus S, MacBook Air -- there seems to be so much wonderful tech out there that I am finding it increasingly difficult to figure out what I would really like to receive this holiday season!

What type of tech gifts are you hoping to find under the tree? Is there something cool you really want from that someone special in your life? Help me out, TiPb community, and let me know what you want!

Apple TV sales top 1 million

Apple TV sales top 1 million

Apple announced today that sales of Apple TV are expected to top 1 million units this week. The significantly smaller, significantly less expensive Apple TV was introduced at Apple's annual iPod and iTunes event in September and released around the end of that month. With a focus on rental rather than purchase, streaming rather than sync, Hollywood rather than "amateur hour" and Netflix as well as iTunes, Apple's PR on the subject provides some interesting stats but strangely, no quotes from Apple execs:
