iPad 2 vs. BlackBerry PlayBook browser battle!

iPad 2 vs. BlackBerry PlayBook browser battle!

As part of his epic BlackBerry PlayBook review, our good friend CrackBerry Kevin put RIM's new tablet browser one-on-one against the great one -- Apple's iPad 2. That's right, we have yet another entry in our browser battle series!

When we put the PlayBook head to head against the iPad 2 in a browser shootout (see below), we saw pretty comparable page load times but did notice on websites where there were flash-based advertisements present, this would slow down the PlayBook by a few seconds while the iPad 2 would serve up a faster loading static image. Disabling flash evened out the load times.

Check out the video after the break and if you haven't already, check out the rest of Crackberry's PlayBook coverage! (Then rush back here and tell us what you think!)

White iPhone 4 shipping in the next few weeks?

After 10 long, long months Bloomberg says Apple will finally -- finally -- be ready to ship the near mythical white iPhone 4 in just a few short weeks. Phew!

The new version will be available from AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless by the end of April, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public. The release was stalled as Apple resolved manufacturing challenges, including paint that peeled under heat, one person said.

Apple hid iPad from Google's Eric Schmidt?

Apple hid iPad from Google's Eric Schmidt?

Nilay Patel, formerly of Engadget writes on his personal blog that, according to Steven Levy's new book, The Plex, after believing Google copied the iPhone with Android, they hid iPad development from Google CEO and former Apple board member Eric Schmidt.

The acrimony was so deep, we’re told, that Jobs kept the iPad a secret from Eric Schmidt even though Schmidt was still on Apple’s board of directors while it was being developed. (Schmidt would later step down, of course.) It’s juicy stuff, and it nicely feeds right into the current iOS vs. Android narrative of the day.

Angry Birds to get cross device game sync features by the summer, new Easter update coming for Angry Birds Seasons.

Angry Birds to get cross device game sync features by the summer, new Easter update coming for Angry Birds Seasons.

Rovio Mobile is working on a way to sync game positions in Angry Birds across multiple devices. We don’t know at this stage if this sync will be limited to just iOS devices or across all devices that have access to Angry Birds, including other smartphones, tablets, and the version sold in the Mac App Store. Either way it would be a great help for those of us that play the game on iPhone and iPad but don’t want to repeat levels; or be at different stages of the game.

Rovio Mobile is also planning an Easter update for Angry Birds Seasons. Not much detail but it promises lots of great new stuff in the update!

Facebook for iPhone allows 'liking' comments... sometimes

Facebook for iPhone allows 'liking' comments... sometimes

Facebook has made some backend changes that allow users to 'like' comments from stories in their news feed. This has been a much requested feature from Facebook users and, unfortunately, Facebook has only half-delivered.

As you can see from the screenshots above, comments are only "likeable" when viewing from the news feed. If you access comments from anywhere else, say notifications or a friend's profile page, you cannot 'like' them.

Who's excited about this feature and can't wait for it to be app wide?

TiPb Asks: Would you want a cheaper iPad subsidized by advertising?

Would you want an iPad that, like the newly announced Amazon Kindle discount, is subsidized by advertising? Now the new Kindle is only $25 (?!) cheaper which isn't really a big enough subsidy in my opinion but what if the numbers were more interesting, like $100 off, $200 off, $300 off, or even free with iAds? Is there a discount level appealing enough that you'd put up with an iAd banner at the bottom of your home screen or 15 seconds of pre-roll several times an hour when you launch an app?

iPad 2 and iPhone 4 3D demonstration, no glasses required [video]

iPad 2 and iPhone 4 3D demonstration, no glasses required [video]

The EHCI Research Group has produced a demonstration video of 3D without glasses on an iPad 2 and iPhone 4 that will make your jaw drop to the floor! The possibility of glasses–free 3D hitting iOS devices has just become a reality.

Head-Coupled Perspective (HCP) on mobile devices allows to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. It is based on a efficient head-tracker that uses the front-facing camera of the device. We use an off-axis projection in order to adapt the perspective of the 3D scene according to the head's position of the user. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction.

The videos are after the break, you have to see them to believe how good they are. When you have, let us know what you think in the comments!
