Poll: Should iTunes Move to the Cloud?

Should iTunes move to the cloud?(survey software)

Back in February there were rumors of something called iTunes Replay, that would allow users to store their media purchases -- which can easily grow to 10s if not 100s of GBs fairly quickly -- on Apple's servers and then stream them down to iTunes, Apple TV, or their iPhone or iPod touch on-demand.

Apps for Less: SimCity, Real Racer, Super Monkey Ball

For those of you who are not familiar with our Apps for Less posts, they are a great way for us to point out a few good iPhone (and iPod touch) applications available in the App Store that are currently on sale, or ones that have come down to a price permanently that we feel are worth mentioning to our readers.

First app worth a mention was a much anticipated game, EA's SimCity. [iTunes Link] Now for a limited time you can design, build and manage the city of your dreams for $2.99!

Skype for iPhone Now Available in Canada

Skype [free - iTunes link], which debuted for the rest of the world back in March, is finally available for iPhone and iPod touch users in Canada. What took so long?

A "territorial restriction" over the licensing of a single, solitary audio codec used to play sound from Skype on the iPhone. No, we [secret Canadian curse word] you not. That's it, and it's been resolved, so go get it!

Of course, it's still not good news all around, as SkypeIn remains locked out of Canada du

Palm Tries to Preempt Apple Again -- Announces Pixi Ahead of iPod Music Event

Yes, Palm just announced the Pixi, rocking EVDO Rev A on Sprint. We knew Palm would be announcing what's basically the Centro to the Pre's Treo -- a lower end device based on their new webOS platform. We just didn't think they'd be gutsy -- or crazy, depending on your read -- to go head-to head with another Apple event.

TiPb Preview: "It's only rock and roll, but we like it" Apple Special Music Event

TiPb Preview: "It's only rock and roll, but we like it" Apple Special Music Event

It's only rock and roll, but we like it -- Apple's 2009 iPod- and iTunes-focused special music event -- has a tag line and a date, this Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 10am PT, 1pm ET. TiPb will be live meta-blogging the event, and following it up with a special edition of iPhone Live! at 5pm PT, 8pm ET.

Last year's event, "Let's rock", started with Steve Jobs saying the reports of his death were greatly exaggerated, and went on to announce 7,000 apps and 1 million downloads in the App Store (yeah, that's changed by a factor of 10 or more!), 65,000,000 iTunes customers, iTunes 8 with Genius, new visualizations, HD TV Shows (and the return of NBC), and Album view, iPhone OS 2.1, the second generation "funner" iPod touch, Spore and other game demos from Phil Schiller, as well as new nanochromatic iPod nanos and down-tweaked classics, and headphones, and in-ear headphones, with remote and mic.

What, oh what, could this year possibly hold?

Quick App: Flickr for iPhone

Yahoo! has (finally!) released an official Flickr app (free - iTunes link) for the iPhone and iPod touch, and... Dunno. I'm not a big Flicker user. So, I haven't really formed much of an opinion about the official Flickr app. Leanna, who does use Flickr, liked the homepage (it has a nice Ken Burns-style pan and zoom animation) but felt the rest was underdeveloped and was surprise to see it didn't add "taken with iPhone" (or other, proper, device attribution).

Apple CFO Speaks: iPhone 3GS Still Selling Out, No Apple DVR

Apple Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Peter Oppenheimer, spoke with analyst Robert Cihara of Caris & Company recently, and according to AppleInsider, revealed the following:

  • Apple is still struggling to meet to demand for the iPhone 3GS, and with China coming on board soon, that may be a longer term problem (it was still sold out when I checked a couple of local (Canadian) places last week).

Rumor Expounded: More on Potential iPod touch Camera Delay

Yesterday we heard a rumor that Apple may be experiencing problems with the iPod's new camera feature, and those problems could cause a delay.

Today, Hardmac threw in some rumored details about the rumored problems:

The issue would be linked to the new camera module. We did not get any further details, but the problem has been spotted in the first dozen of thousands units produced. Those units have been put aside.

App Review: CoPilot Live 8 Turn-by-Turn Navigation for iPhone

App Review: CoPilot Live 8 Turn-by-Turn Navigation for iPhone

(Co-Pilot Live 8 for iPhone Forum Review by cjvitek For more Forum Reviews, see the TiPb iPhone App Store Forum Review Index!)

With CoPilot Live North America [$34.99 - iTunes link] The march of GPS Turn-by-turn apps continued. (See the App Review master list, above, for reviews of AT&T Navigator, Navigon Mobile Navigator, iGo My Way, and Sygic Mobile Maps). In the interest of full disclosure, I received a promo code to review this app.

GPS Turn-by-turn apps all want to achieve the same goal - become the ultimate navigation assistant to help you when you are driving. So far the apps I have reviewed have had strong points and some weak points - each having some features that are nice, but no one app dominating the competition. CoPilot Live falls right in, with some compelling features but also lacking some features to put it over the top.
