Tip: Send your digital booklets to iBooks

Ever wonder how to get your digital booklets into iBooks? All of us probably have some sort of digital booklet we received as part of an album in iTunes, right? To be honest, I never really viewed them because I would typically be on the go when the mood struck, not necessarily sitting on front of a computer.

Well, did you know you can "convert" your digital booklets in iTunes to make them viewable in iBooks? This is so easy, it should be illegal. We'll show you how after the break!

TiPb TV 1: Should you get an iPad or MacBook Air?

Should you get an iPad or MacBook Air, or more properly, who should get an iPad and who would do better with a MacBook Air? That's the topic for the very first episode of TiPb TV, our new, more conversational, video show.

Rene and I go back and forth on the pros and cons of the smaller, less expensive, iOS powered iPad and how it compares to the only slightly bigger, double the price, Mac OS X sporting MacBook Air. This is the first time Apple really has two very different products in overlapping categories and there's really no best answer, just a breakdown of which might be best for you, for your kids, for your parents, or just for your inner geek.

Keyboard vs multitouch, storage, speed, battery life, portability, and which is better for things like reading, watching, and browsing vs. production and productivity are all huge factors in the decision (as is cost of course!)

So if you've been trying to decide between an iPad and a MacBook Air this holiday season check out our very first TiPb TV and we'll try to help you make the best choice possible.

Skyfire for iPhone - app review

Skyfire for iPhone - app review

Skyfire for iPhone is a web browsing application that converts Adobe Flash to HTML5/H.264 so you can view it on iPhone or iPad touch. Seeing as Apple chose not to implement Flash into iOS, a lot of videos on the web still can't be watched on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Skyfire steps in to try and bridge this gap and while it's a nice feature to have, but not always the best experience.

iPads in China come standard with 2-year AppleCare protection plan

iPads in China come standard with 2-year AppleCare protection plan

The two-year AppleCare protection plan now comes standard on iPads purchased in China. In all other countries, the iPad comes with a one-year warranty for repairs and 90 days of telephone support. AppleCare extends this warranty and support to two years and can be purchased for an additional $0.99. Why is China so special?

The Chinese government has classified the iPad as a laptop computer, and in China, it is required by law that a two-year warranty be included with the purchase of any computer. This is extremely interesting because there have been many debates on whether the iPad is "good enough" to replace a computer or laptop. China says "yes!"

iXtreamer media player, access iOS content on your HDTV [video]

iXtreamer media player, access iOS content on your HDTV [video]

Well known media player manufacturer Xtreamer, has just launched a new media player, called the iXtreamer. It is aimed squarely at iOS users because not only is this a media player, it also has a dock on the top which accepts virtually all iPod / iPhone devices as well as the iPad. When a device is in the dock, it offers a full charging solution; but more importantly, provides access to your music, video and photo libraries all via your HD TV. The iXtreamer has its own on screen UI to access and play your content via a remote control from the comfort of your living room.

Experience your iPad music collection on the spectacular artistic GUI on your TV screen with amazing picture quality of HD video and crystal clear sound clarity of 7.1 CH digital audio. Use your iPhone or the included remote control to navigate through your entertainment choices using crisp, animated HD menus.

Now combine this with a media player that can also play content from a local hard drive, USB Drives or network attached storage and the package starts to look particularly attractive. File support is well covered, the iXtreamer supports, BluRay image files, MKV, AVI and a lot more besides, all in 1080P HD. YouTube access is also included along with internet radio and TV streams.

Xtreamer has big plans for the device; they are currently investigating the possibility of getting access to apps and games on your iOS device and showing them on your HDTV too. They do state that this will depend on Apple’s willingness, so I think you can rule that one out for the foreseeable future.

This does look like a very good media player with some special features to attract iOS users. The iXtreamer is currently priced at 199 Euros ($270). Shipping is available worldwide and it is available now.

Although this has much greater file support than the Apple TV, does it offer enough for the extra cost? Let us know in the comments!

Sneak peek: New-style Facebook messages on iPhone

Sneak peek: New-style Facebook messages on iPhone

Facebook's new-style messages service -- an abstraction of email, IM, and SMS -- is already working in the latest version of Facebook for iPhone... one you've had the feature rolled out to your account. Facebook isn't the first to try and redefine the ways we communicate online. Google has done it twice already, once successfully with the eccentric but reserved Gmail and again unsuccessfully with the wikichat that was Wave. Facebook is a social network however -- the social network -- so their take is decidedly different and whether or not it catches on remains to be seen.

Setup is simple on the web. You get an invitation, you accept, then you get your @facebook email address, verify your SMS number (if you want), and login to chat (also if you want). After that you're hit with the new interface. Once that's setup, the next time you launch Facebook on iPhone you're alerted that new-style messages are good to go (same way Places alerted you when it arrived) and you're good to go.

We'll be testing it out over the next week or so but in the meantime check out the screenshots after the break and if you have any questions or comments, you know where to leave them!

Google Docs on-the-go from iPhone or iPad

23

Google Docs on-the-go from iPhone or iPad

Google has added some much awaited functionality to Google Docs today -- you can now edit your docs on-the-go with iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad!

The feature will be rolling out over the next few days and means that:

  • You can work on that important memo...while on the bus or train to work.
  • If you’re behind on a group proposal, but really want to make it to the ball game tonight, your whole team can work on it from the bleacher seats.
  • You can take minute-by-minute notes at a concert so you’ll always remember the setlist. And your friends can jealously follow in real-time at home.
  • ...and the list goes on!

If you utilize Google Docs all you have to do is visit docs.google.com in Safari on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and select the document you would like to edit. Once the document is open simply select the edit button and you will be switched over to their mobile editor.

Let us know if you are excited for the seemingly much anticipated feature and if you use it how it worked out for you!

Check out a video of Google Docs editing on-the-go in a video after the break!

17 year old geek makes $130,000 selling White iPhone 4 conversion kits

A 17-year-old geek turned entrepreneur pocketed $130,000 in the past 6 months by selling white iPhone 4 conversion kits online, prompting a private investigator and possible legal woes. From The New York Observer:

The unbelievable demand among Apple enthusiasts for the long-delayed white version of the iPhone 4 has been compared to the hunt for that legendary white whale, Moby Dick. So when Fei Lam, a high school senior and gadget nerd, got a tip about buying up some white iPhone 4 parts, he saw the opportunity to finally make his passion for electronics pay off.

Mark Zuckerberg talks Apple, Facebook integrated during Web 2.0 Summit

On the second day of the Web 2.0 Summit, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made some comments on his company's dealings with Apple over Ping.

Zuckerberg also had an explanation for why the company had not partnered with Apple to let it pull in social data for Ping. He says that Facebook has had to invest tens of millions of dollars into infrastructure to enable games from large developers like Zynga, which is why Facebook and Zynga agreed to a formal alliance. Zuckerberg says that if the company is going to make an investment like this, “we want to have an understanding that you won’t just import our data — and that you try to contribute back. We’re working through that.”

Incipio Kickstand for iPad - accessory review

4

Incipio Kickstand for iPad - accessory review

If you're looking for a durable standing case for your iPad, the Incipio Kickstand case may be for you. It is made of rip-stop nylon on the outside and lined with microsuede on the inside.

The Incipio Kickstand is designed with different panels so that they can fold into a triangle, converting the case to stand. Since the inside is made out of microsuede, it has plenty of friction to keep the iPad standing without special notches, hooks, or flaps to keep it in place. Unfortunately, there is only one angle you have the iPad stand at. This fixed angle keeps the iPad standing tall, perfect for setting on a desk and watching movies. If using the iPad on your lap, you will not want to have it set up as kickstand because the angle is too awkward.

Not only is the microsuede great for providing necessary friction, but it's also very soft and at no risk of scratching your precious iPad. Also, the inside of the middle panel has a pocket that is great for holding items such as envelopes, notes, and business cards. Lastly, the Incipio Kickstand has a magnetic closure which allows it to be free of flaps or fancy closures.

The Incipio Kickstand for iPad is available in the TiPb iPad accessory store in three colors: black, light gray, and khaki/tan. If you're looking for a nice standing case that also offers some good protection, I recommending checking this one out.
