iPhone 3.0: New Podcast Controls in iPod! Jump Back! Multi-Speed Scrubbing!

iPhone 3.0: New Podcast Controls in iPod! Jump Back! Multi-Speed Scrubbing!

In iPhone OS 2.x, we bemoaned the seemingly useless nature of the repeat and buttons when it came to podcast playback. They just sort of hung around, like guests who were welcome when the music was playing, but just wouldn't leave when the party was over.

Now, in iPhone 3.0, Apple has replaced them with an email icon on the left hand side, and a speed counter on the right hand side. The email icon supposedly allows you to send an iTunes Link for the podcast (similar to how you could previously email YouTube video links).

iPhone After Dark: Gizmodo Goes Wild (NSFW-AC)

We can't use the picture Gizmodo used to headline their post, so we're retreating beneath the wholesome banner of Megan Fox for this one (blink blink). Suffice it to say, mixing and matching from their Gawker Media heritage, Gizmodo asks the adult-content question:

Can the new OS make the iPhone the best sexual toy ever?

AT&T Finally Unleashes the iPhone 3G With No-Commitment Pricing

Well we all you that this day would eventually come. BGR is reporting on March 26th AT&T will begin to offer the iPhone 3G with a no-commitment price as well as no in-store activation. Something to keep in mind, this all comes to us at a very steep price of $599 for the 8 GB and $699 for the 16 GB with a few strings attached.

AT&T will only sell you "one per line". So with that in mind, don't go into the store without a current AT&T phone line and expect to walk out with a shiny new iPhone 3G because that is not going to happen. These iPhones are only being sold to current customers that meet the following criteria:

Apple iPhone 3.0 Massive News Roundup Day 2!

Apple iPhone 3.0 Massive News Roundup Day 2!

Rather than split todays updates into a separate post, we've gone back and added them to yesterday's Massive iPhone 3.0 New Roundup so you still have a single stop for all your iPhone 3.0 updates. New stuff will tend towards the bottom, though we put today's iPhone 3.0 Beta 1 gallery closer to the top.

Enjoy!

iPhone 3.0: Tethering Enabled

Apple's Senior VP for iPhone Software, Scott Forstall, said that Apple had already built Tethering into the iPhone software, shuffling the burden of "where the heck is it then?" neatly into the hands of the still-waffling carriers.

iPhones Causing Mistrials? Google, Twitter, and Wikipedia Out of Order?

iPhones Causing Mistrials? Google, Twitter, and Wikipedia Out of Order?

The New York Times (via TUAW) is reporting that the iPhone is literally causing mistrials now. Howsat?

It might be called a Google mistrial. The use of BlackBerrys and iPhones by jurors gathering and sending out information about cases is wreaking havoc on trials around the country, upending deliberations and infuriating judges.

Others were, apparently, Twittering updates during trial, or looking up information in Wikipedia [citation needed...]

"iPhone HD" and the Problematic Shift to Resolution Independence?

"iPhone HD" and the Problematic Shift to Resolution Independence?

We've spoken quite a bit before about the potential that Apple might one day "split the platform" with either an iPhone nano (very unlikely) or an iPhone HD (which we've been discussing quite a bit lately).

Right now, all existing iPhones and iPod touches sport 320x480 screens at 163dpi. The iPod nano, by contrast, was already at 202dpi during the previous, "fatty" generation. The BlackBerry Bold is at something around 217dpi. HTC is making 480x800 displays now like they're going out of style.
