Facebook Messenger receives update

Facebook Messenger for iPhone has been updated and brings the ability to see when the other person is typing, shows if a person is online or mobile, and has the people you message most quickly accessible.

Despite Facebook's claim of bringing the ability to see when the other person is typing, I haven't seen any such indication. How about you?

Facebook Messenger is a faster way to send mobile messages to friends. With Messenger, you can send and receive messages with any of your friends around the world or anyone in your mobile contacts list. Messenger is available on iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry.

Here's the update details:

  • Ability to see who's online and who's mobile
  • Ability to see when the other person is typing
  • A faster way to compose new messages to the people you message most
  • Various performance improvements
  • Support for 12 additional languages
  • Support for iOS 5

Facebook Messenger is available on the iPhone for free.

Facebook Messenger receives update

Hey there! Sorry you ran into trouble.
You definitely should be able to see when your friends are typing, if they're also using the new version of Facebook Messenger (or the website).
It looks like your friend Rene was on mobile, so ask them to upgrade to the latest version, and you should be able to see when they're typing.

It's a great app, fast and responsive, much better than the chat in the (new) FB app for iPhone. Keep up the good work! :)

It also fixed an interaction problem with the new Japanese keyboard in iOS 5. Japanese input is a very complicated thing to get right. Apple moved the UI that you used to select the appropriate kanji while typing in hiragana from next to the word that's currently being typed to just above the keyboard. as a result some apps that rely on the keyboard to be a certain size now have their UI covered while typing in Japanese.
Regarding facebook messenger, you literally couldn't see what you were typing into the text box nor could you tap the enter button. It made messaging my friends annoying because I had to keep switching keyboards to press the send button. I've been told facebook is working on the same fix for the facebook app too. Another app that needs to fix this is whatsapp.
