How to estimate your travel time in the OS X Mavericks Calendar app

If you juggle your appointments, meetings, and events using the Calendar app on your Mac, you've probably run into a time or two where knowing the estimated travel time would have been helpful. Luckily, this is now a default feature of the stock Calendar app as long as you're running OS X Mavericks. Here's how to access it:

  1. Launch the Calendar app from the desktop of your Mac running OS X Mavericks.
  2. Find the event in your calendar that you'd like to view travel time for and double click on it in order to bring up the info box. Note that in order for this to work you need to have a valid address attached to the event.
  3. Now click on the date section and you'll see a Travel Time option. Click on that now.
  4. The Calendar app then pulls information from Maps in order to give you a driving time from home as well as a walking time. Click on either one to add it. If you know the travel time, you can also select custom and see it yourself.

That's all there is to it. My only gripe with the feature right now is that I can't tell it a custom from address in order to calculate travel time. That'd be a welcome addition in an update. If you've used the feature, let us know how accurate it's been for you!

Absolutely useless in Japan

I found that if you make a contact for an address helps Maps to locate it. I see several clients a day and if I manually enter their address Apple doesn't know what I'm talking about. But if I make a contact with the clients info and use that in the calendar it's able to find it. Apple needs to fix this.

I wouldn't trust it. Ever.

I think it's a nice feature! If I have to customize the travel time I'll look it up in maps and take that travel time and add it in, that way I always have an accurate travel time.

I love this feature. Especially for, let's say, a daughter's upcoming eye doctor appointment in another city... This at least helps plan when we should leave to get there on time... Now, if Apple could only program this feature to automatically update based on weather and traffic conditions on the day of the appointment!

Great feature, but it would be far more suited to iOS 7 calendar.

Good feature but it keeps calculating my travel times from my work address rather than my home. Would be nice if I could change it, hopefully in the next update.

Neat concept, not sure I'd ever have the chance to use it, though.
