Everything you need to know about Apple's smaller, thinner, lighter, 7.9-inch iPad mini

Apple's new iPad mini was announced on October 23, 2012. Apple calls it the iPad, just concentrated, but the specs are closer to the iPod touch 5 or iPad 2. With an Apple A5 processor, LTE 4G and DC-HSPA networking, and the new Lightning connector, that still makes it the best small tablet on the planet.

Key features: 7.9-inch, 1024x736 163ppi display, Apple A5 chipset, 5mp/1080p iSight camera, 720p FaceTime HD camera, LTE/DC-HSPA+/EVDO data, Lightning connector.

Pricing: $329/16GB, $429/32GB, $529/64GB for Wi-Fi. $459/16GB, $559/32GB, $659/64GB for Wi-Fi + Cellular.

Availability: Wi-Fi available now, cellular shipping in mid- to late-November.

iPad mini vs. Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD: On display size and density

When Apple introduced the iPad mini, they spent quite a bit of time comparing it to the Google Nexus 7, especially when it came to the merits of the iPad mini's 4:3, 7.9-inch screen over the 16:10, 7-inch screen of the Nexus 7. Physical screen size is only one factor, however. There's also screen resolution to consider, something Apple often touts with their Retina display products like the iPhone 5, iPod touch 5, iPad 4, and MacBook Pro. But not the iPad mini. So, when we put everything on the table, how well does the iPad mini stack up not only to the Nexus 7, but the similarly screened Amazon Kindle Fire HD?

iPad mini and iPad 4: Should you upgrade?

Just because Apple has released the new iPad mini and iPad 4 doesn't mean you have to race off and get it. Crazy, I know, particularly coming from the greatest iPad enthusiast site in the world, but that just goes to show you how true it is. When the time comes for you to get your next tablet, whether it's today or next year, and iPad or something else, you should look at what's on the market and decide what best suits your needs.

Amazon attacks iPad mini, forgets Kindle Fire is useless in most countries

While announcing their Q3 numbers yesterday, Amazon took the opportunity to take a few shots at Apple and the newly announced iPad mini. Amazon listed what they think are key advantages for their Kindle Fire HD over the iPad mini, including higher screen resolutions, better speakers, and lower cost. This, perhaps, to help distract from the loss Amazon suffered during the quarter.

AT&T vs Verizon vs Sprint: Which iPad carrier should you choose?

If you're in the U.S. it's probably not so easy deciding which carrier is best for your iPad or iPad mini needs, AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint. Price is always a huge factor to consider when choosing a carrier, but coverage should be just as, if not more, important when making a decision. Since the iPad and iPad mini support LTE cellular technology, you're going to want to take a close look at which carriers offer the best LTE coverage in your area.

iPad 4 vs. iPad 2 vs. iPad mini: Which iPad should you get?

The latest, greatest, iPad -- in this case the late 2012 iPad 4 -- can't be considered a no-brainer buy this year because Apple has now also introduced the all-new iPad mini. The iPad 2 has also stuck around in some sort of limbo-like middle ground, further complicating your purchasing decision.

Power vs portability, starting at $329 vs. starting at $399 or $499 -- there's a lot of factors to consider.

16GB vs 32GB vs 64GB: Which new iPad mini or iPad 4 storage capacity should you get?

So you've decided to take the plunge and the new iPad mini or the newly updated iPad 4, but you aren't sure which storage capacity size to go with? The difference between 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB isn't just how much stuff you can put on it, but $100-$200 in up front costs, so it's worth thinking about.

Black or white, which iPad mini or iPad 4 should you get?

Apple has updated the iPad and launched the new iPad mini, so we're updating our buyers guides to help you choose just exactly the right devices for you. Now, ever since the iPad 2 launched with a choice of black or white faceplates, one of the biggest decisions we've all had to make is which color to get. This year, that stays the same for the iPad, but for the iPad mini, which has an iPod touch 5-style colored backplate as well, it's an even bigger -- make that smaller -- choice.

I love the posts, products, and contests. But, I have never been able to enter a single contest, just links, loops, eventually to nothing at all. Anyone else have this problem?

I like being able to hold the mini in one hand comfortably. It's better in bed for late night browsing, nothing sketchy, just catching up on the news when I can't fall asleep :)

We have been getting a lot of questions about iPad mini durability and screen repair feasibility lately here at iRepairNational. We have been posting our finding on some of the major discussion and blog sites and iMore.com made the cut. It turns out we have good and bad news.
~The bad news is that the mini is as fragile as its big brothers, despite being lighter. Why you ask? Well, all previous versions of iPad have a had a thin plastic or rubber trim that fit between the aluminum frame and the glass. This allowed the iPad to absorb small dents and dings before the aluminum put too much pressure on the fragile glass (yes, despite the hype all of Apple's products still use crack-prone glass). The iPad Mini Glass fits right up to the beveled aluminum edge, and if that edge gets dented in it immediately puts a lot of pressure on the glassing causing it to crack.
~ The good news is that the glass can be replaced for much less than purchasing a replacement or even one of Apple's refurbished units. There are a few challenges to the repair, primarily in that this is the first ever Apple mobile device to require soldering when replacing a cracked or shattered screen. The glass/touchscreen itself has cable that is soldered to a touchscreen controller board, and than a cable from the home button also solders on to the digitizer cable.
