iPad Wi-Fi + 3G: torn down

Bookending the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G unboxing from earlier today is the other classic staple of geekdom: the tear-down. As usual iFixit did the deed, and here's what they uncovered:

  • There are actually FIVE antennas in this iPad. Two antennas handle the cell reception -- one is in the RF window on top, the other attaches to the LCD frame. A single GPS antenna is also housed in the RF window on top. Just like the iPad Wi-Fi, there are two antennas that handle Wi-Fi / Bluetooth connectivity, one in the Apple logo and another to the left of the dock connector.

  • Apple looks to be using the entire LCD frame as an antenna!

  • Apple uses the same 3G baseband processor in both the iPhone 3GS and the iPad 3G.

  • The baseband processor in question is the Infineon 337S3754 PMB 8878 X-Gold IC. It was actually white-labeled on the production unit, but with enough sleuthing we were able to confirm its true identity.

  • The iPad 3G has a Broadcom BCM4750UBG Single-Chip AGPS Solution, whereas the iPhone 3GS uses an Infineon Hammerhead II package. Big win for Broadcom!

Head on over if you want to see the whole, sordid strip-down...

[iFixit, thanks Gregg for the tip!]

iPad Wi-Fi + 3G: torn down

I bought 3 iPads and 1 iPad Im going to drop it down all the way from the top of the US Bank in Downtown LA can't wait....YouTube time

Tipb should start a charity drive. "got an ipad that you are dying to get rid of? Donate it to a less fortunate geek and eliminate the hassle of making a YouTube video that only 13 yearolds will find appealing for 2.5 minutes!"

I hate how people feel compelled to destroy an ipad for 5 seconds of fame. @J1CA1 glad you have so much extra cash lying around to buy ipads to destroy. How about you learn about helping others less fortunate and give one away to a person in need and perhaps contribute to society instead of destroy resources without cause.

how about you mind your own business and stop worrying what other people do with their own money.
I'll never understand some people.

Any reports of the 3g iPad having the same (or similar) wifi problems that the wifi-only models have had?

@Tweger01 11:00am perhaps you should listen to your own counsel and not worry about orion2021's opinion.

Mine is having problems. It sometimes loses the connection or does not automatically connect. Went to the Apple Store and the guy had no idea what I was talking about. I didn't have patience to deal with it bc I was in a hurry. I'll check it out this weekend.

I am just curious how big the battery is? Many people are bragging that ipad is such an energy saver than android tablets. Is it because of a bigger battery or the ios is better?
