iPhone 3.0 Beta 4 Now Available to Developers

Like clockwork, Apple has released iPhone 3.0 Beta 4 along with iPhone SDK 3.0 Beta 4 to developers. This marks the 3rd consecutive alternate-Tuesday update following the original Beta 1 release. Beta 2 and Beta 3 were both heavily scoured by code-divers who discovered several new, as-year unannounced features (see our updated iPhone 3.0 walkthrough for more!).

Will Beta 4 be any different? We certainly hope not!

Note: We've gotten reports that developers must install the iTunes 8.2 pre-release before attempting to install iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4.

Also remember iPhone 3.0 is a real Beta intended for developers and testers, not for daily use on a primary phone. If you don’t need the beta, don’t install the beta, and for Jobsake don’t buy it off of eBay. Yikes!

(Thanks Danny, Andrew, and all those who sent this in!)

JustinHorn says:

Yeah, 8.2 is required:
This is a pre-release version of iTunes 8.2. You must download and install iTunes 8.2 pre-release in order to activate iPhone OS 3.0 beta 4 on your iPhone or iPod touch.
Installing now, hopefully there is some new stuff to check out!

spidesol says:

i updated itunes and then i tried to upgrade to beta 4 and my screen went pink with the itunes logo on it and it keeps giving me an error message on itunes indicating that there was an error anyone else get this? my phone is bricked for not it wont come off of the pink screen

Andrew Rusch says:

Are you a registered developer? I got that too, but then it verified me and passed me through to the software loading.

spidesol says:

yes i am a registered developer

Andrew Rusch says:

I'm not sure what to tell you. I'm currently experiencing issues with the iPod crashing.
Is this version more or less buggy?

BriBles says:

If you're registered developers, then you're all under NDA and shouldn't even be talking about this!
Seriously though, keep leaking new code tidbits, it's been a blast to watch.

spidesol says:

yeah (3014) is the error code its giving me

Mike says:

Ya, I'm having the same problem... got Error: connected to device, path does not exist - stuck at pink itunes screen. Let me know if you guys get it figured out.
And yes, I'm registered.

Andrew Rusch says:

Any recognition of the device in iTunes?

Andrew Rusch says:

I know this sounds bad, but...jiggle the cable...I did it a few times and iTunes loaded it right up.

Mike says:

Well itunes is detecting it in restore mode and wanting to restore it back to 2.2.1. First off, Apple says restoring back to 2.x.x will not work (I already had 3.0 beta 3 installed), secondly, I don't want to go back to 2.x.x anyway.

spidesol says:

yeah when i plug in the phone it says iphone found in recovery mode and i click restore with alt held down and choose beta 4 and after it extracts the software it the cannot restore iphone 3014 comes up

Mike says:

Think I got it going... I used iTunes... I went ahead with the iTunes restore except I option clicked restore, and chose the beta 4 ipsw and it's restoring now as I type this.

Mike says:

...if you need further explanation I'll check back in a few - we'll get you up and going man.

Andrew Rusch says:

3014 is the "not a registered developer" error. I entered my UDID wrong back when 2.0 betas came out and bricked my phone because of it and had to get it replaced...
I'd request help in developer connection.

Mike says:

ohhhh.... damn, I see you already did that. I don't man, mine is restoring now. Sounds like it is a "registration" issue.

Mike says:

Just curious... Andrew, did you not use Xcode to install beta 3? I did... didn't know to use iTunes this time. Is this suppose to be the way from now on or is Apple going to change this for the hell of it everytime or have you always been able to install either way?

Andrew Rusch says:

I've always only used iTunes...
I think it is required with this new 8.2 pre-release.

spidesol says:

i havent installed sdk beta 4 yet you think that might be the problem? im downloading it right now

MoBounce says:

I am a PAID registered developer... downloaded beta 4... and got the same error upon install but error "3013". Pink screen and all. Restarted my phone and tried again... now the phone is restoring AOK as I speak...

Rob says:

what about those of us on a dev's device list? beta 4 will only install on the itunes 8.2 pre-release? beta 3 has been great, should i just stick with that?

KunchDiesel says:

problem with sticking with b3 is that it will expire in approx 10 days. I have the same problem. I am able to restore back to b3. Im trying on vista but this time i will try on XP. I meet all the requirements listed in this forum.

Korg says:

So developers have to send the iTunes 8.2 update via email to all there testers along with beta 4 file? Is that how works?

Korg says:

Expires in 10days where does it say that?
Thanks..

KunchDiesel says:

I dont have a personal way of knowing however I've read this on other message boards and it seems to be unanimous. Apparently you can set your clock forward day by day until your phone says its expired. I dont know if you can change the date back after you do this though so i havent tried it. I was able to fix my issue by installing b4 on my xp pc with itunes 8.2 installed and a different usb cable successfully.

Muero says:

I can't get iTunes 8.2.0.10 (64-bit Windows version) to work at all. It appeared to install correctly, but crashes every time I launch it. (Yes, I restarted after installation.) Anybody else using Vista 64-bit with the new iTunes? In case I really can't get it to work, could I install the 32-bit version of iTunes instead?

RiK says:

So, I'm intrigued...
Some of you are talking about the problems you are having installing from windows machines. If that's the case, why not use a Mac?
If you're registered iPhone developers then you must be using a Mac to develop on as that's the only platform supported by xcode... If not, then why are you registered? Surely not just to get early access to v3.0?
;)

ktula says:

@ RiK:
If Apple releases the version of iTunes 8.2 Pre-release for Windows at the same time as the Mac version, and that iTunes 8.2 Pre-release is required to install iPhone 3.0 beta 3, can we not assume that Apple is aware folks are also installing 3.0 beta on Windows?

ktula says:

typo: i meant to write beta 4 instead of beta 3.

Muneesh says:

I installed Beta 4 without any issues...
Only thing I can't get working is the STORE option to log-in and provide the account info.
I've Windows Vista machine and I did upgrade iTunes to 8.2 before upgrading the iPhone s/w

Michael says:

I'm having the same problem that spidesol is having :/

Michael says:

Well, I was previously using a PowerPC G5 and instead i went to an Intel based Mac ... I got it to upgrade there... whew! now I went back to my PowerPC to restore my backup!

guenze says:

I'm having the same problem with error 3013.
my problem was the proxy. with direct connection to the internet it's installing

Bager says:

@guenze, thanks for the Proxy server tip! Once disabled I then got a 3004 error. Some more googling suggested opening access to port 8080 on my firewall and then the restore worked.

dloveprod says:

I did an update from beta 3 to beta 4 instead of a restore because the developers name and password that i was using stopped working. All worked fine other than my music no longer showing up under artist, song or video. I can only access if from the playlist, but at least my phone didn't brick. :-)

bryan says:

TO THOSE HAVING IPOD PROBLEMS IN BETA 4
i kept having my ipod app crash do here what i did to fix
1 plug the iphone into yr computer
2 wait for it to load under the device list in itunes
3 go to music under iphone and just play a song on yr pc
4 while the song is playing open yr ipod app
5 it should take a second to load, once it does pick a song to play and unplug straight from the pc WHILE the song on the iphone is still playing
6 should have a working ipod app!

iphone3gmods says:

i have all the links on my site, direct downloads for all version of iphone and itouch, i am also the biggest cydia list provider on the internet, number one for "cydia sources" in google, check my site all firmware download links are on my front page including itunes 8.2 ENJOY

Peter Wood says:

I am a bit confused. I had b3 and its good. I installed iTunes 8.2 on a mac and then used xcode to install the b4 release on the phone. On previous betas up to 3 I had to wait to get home form work to connect and restore from my iTunes on my winxp PC at home. My iPhone usually shows the itunes connect to activate screen until I restore again. Now it appears my phone has activated to O2 itself without connecting to iTunes. Is this correct behaviour?

Peter Wood says:

Shoudld I be able to upgrade from iTunes 8.2 running on my winxp machine? If so how do I do that? Using the restore function in iTunes?

Brad Willman says:

IPOD Crash fix. Super Easy.... Plug IPOD into PC. Load ITunes. While its plugged in load IPOD app on phone. Songs show up in list now. Unplug from pc and it works 100% of the time now.

justus says:

Jeremy says:

@justus, Wow... just wow... I'm guessing you never bothered to do much reading before you went ahead and updated to a developer only beta... pay the $99 on Apple's website and become a "real" developer...

justus says:

i download it on a unoffical site and nobody said that you need be registerd as a developer...well now i know it
can anybody help me please

nme says:

Rene Ritchie says:

nme says:

Rob says:

Iam Not A Registered Dev And I Loaded 3.0 Beta On My Iphone and now i cant get it to restor correctly on itunes error 3014 what do i do and there is no warrenty on my phone so that is out

Dan Mahoney says:

I am registered developer. woke up to the iphone saying firmware was expired. I downloaded itunes 8.2 and iphone 3.0, the new beta.
i did everything and it didnt work, now i have the pink screen, reinstalled 8.2 and it says it can't restore. aaaggh any ideas?

Dan Mahoney says:

i instealled itunes 8.2.. but used xcode to try to install 3.0 beta. is that the problem? what can I do now?

Jesus Villalobos says:

Ok i installed Iphone 3.0 version 4 beta and when connected to itunes it says m device is not recongnized and now i have problem getting the phone to work

amrayu says:

I woke up to the pink screen of death this morning. I tried to reinstall 3.0 beta 3 and it didn't work. Then I found out there's a beta 5 now. Downloaded 3.0 beta 5 along with iTunes 8.2 and now my phone is back in business.

Stan Dev says:

Hi, i have an issue that I cannot seem to find answers for anywhere, anyone can help here it would be great, as I have an iPhone which expired with the OS3 and when trying to update to the new OS4, there is no way for me to do it as Xcode and Itunes wont let me connect as there is a phone lock password on the phone and there is no option for me to enter the code anywhere and the iPhone simply remains with pink screen or emergency dial and no option to enter my code, so how do I get this iPhone restored?

Jesse Byrd says:

Anyone wanting to run Beta 4... you are out of luck.
The Betas are only valid for X number of days. Once the time has passed you will get the PSoD (Pink Screen of Death).
You have to move up to the next version. To get from Beta 4 to Beta 5 you need to do the following:
Download iTunes 8.2 -
Download Beta 5 for the iPhone/iTouch (select your version) and then:
Install iTunes
Plug in the phone or touch
On the UPGRADE button hold down the option and then select the directory/folder where you downloaded the Beta 5 and it is just that easy.
Once you do that you can then see the phone/touch in Xcode.
If you did not follow the instructions above you will have a bricked phone. To unbrick you can set the phone/touch into DFU mode and then restore to Beta 4 and then go back to the above steps to UPGRADE to Beta 5.

Stan Dev says:

Correct, sorry it is the beta 5 that I want installed however as the phone has a lock code and I get NO WAY to enter the code, I cannot do this restore from beta 3 to 5, so how do I get past the PSoD to be able to let the Xcode allow install or enter my phone lock code?

Stan Dev says:

So here is the latest! Apple Dev Support say, "Sorry, they are aware of this issue but have no fix for it currently!"
Go figure...

Paid Proxy says:

Crazy how many people still use and others profit with web proxies.

LionArch007 says:

I had the same problem. I had the PSoD with a 1604 error. Don't know what 1604 is, but I fixed this by doing a hard reboot on the iPhone and when it appears in iTunes and says it found an iPhone in recovery mode I hold down alt/option and click on restore and find the beta 5 ipsw file and reinstall it. I was freakin out before that so I know what some of you are feeling.

Tom Developer says:

@LionArch007
Your solution worked for med also, thanks!

KBDev says:

Thanks a ton LionArch007!! Your solution worked for me too. I too had this 1604 error and although I knew there was some key combination to use I tried only the "Command" and "Ctrl" keys while clicking Restore.
I do have one more issue - my iPhone camera is not working - the shutter graphics shows but does not open up.

Jason Bici says:

Bought 3.0 off apple developer website for 99$, woke up on june 19th and my phone was completley locked, nothing works. i can't restore update or anything and i paid for it !
help please!

Kent says:

In my case, got the same error and the same itunes screen. I just simply unplug my usb cable and plug it again. Now, it works!. My ITunes 8.2 detected my phone and started restoring it. Good thing I backed up my phone before it went troubled.
