iPhone Sync Busted on Windows 7 with Intel P55 Chipset

iPhone BSOD + Laughing Ballmer

According to The Register, if you're running Microsoft's latest OS, Windows 7, and your PC has an Intel P55 Express chipset, you're in for a whole of iPhone sync hurt:

For the past six weeks, complaints from users running this trifecta of pain have been clogging a thread on Apple's discussion board. The posts report that - in most cases - iTunes 9 for Windows will recognize the iPhone, but when a sync is attempted, users are greeted with a cryptic "error 0xE8000065" - an iPhone-connection failure notification.

While not the oldest or most common chipset, and thus not likely to affect a huge swathe of users, those with problems just want them fixed. Microsoft is doing their... um... investigating:

Microsoft has not seen this particular question posed in the Microsoft Answers for Windows 7 community forum, nor in any of our call centers. We reviewed the issue raised on the Apple Discussion Board and are currently investigating. If we determine this to be a problem specific to Windows 7, we will post an update on the Microsoft Answers site."

In the mean time, here's what's worked for some:

  • A USB port on a USB card not part of the P55
  • deleting the iPodDevices.xml file from C:\Users username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
  • disabling Bonjour
  • turning on C-state capability in BIOS

If you're having this problem, and if any of these or other fixes work for you, let us know!

WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII says:

i don't think that's microsoft's fault. it's not their responsibility to make sure iphones sync with itunes. the company that makes the iphones and itunes should fix that.

tuscanidream says:

And let me guess. It's not Microsofts fault that windows is a pile of garbage that doesn't work 99% of the time.

Michael says:

Hahaha, classic Windows hater. A moron who wants to pay 3x as much for a system that works with 1/100 of the available software.

bugs says:

just blame palm for this, 99% this has to do with the device id usb crap apple / palm going on with.

Jake says:

I hate this kinda stuff!

Rjd says:

Oh god, Apple fanboy alert. The morons are about to stampede!

  1. This hasn't got a damn thing to do with windows. It's an intel chipset issue. The driver for it isn't even an MS driver - it's an intel driver. But way to mislead, Rene.
  2. Even if it were an MS issue why would MS have any obligation to ensure that apple hardware works with MS software? You don't seem to have a problem with Apple PURPOSELY breaking iTunes for all the folks with palm pre, even if they spent big bucks on music from the iTunes store.

The iPhone blog sorely needs a better writer.

fjrabon says:

As much as I dislike MS as a company, they definitely seem to be the last in the line of blame on this issue.

Shubes says:

"Windows 7 is not going to have any of the problems that previous versions of Windows had!" Noooooo...we're going to create a whole slew of brand-new trash 'n' crash that will infuriate our loyal bonehead followers. Oh, and before you start the lame flame, let the record show that I've been a Microsoft user since the days of Windows 3.1. Doesn't mean I like it, and it certainly doesn't mean I think it's a good OS; just means I haven't sprung for a Mac. Yet. That will soon change. I'm tired of operating systems that only look good in blue.

Rene Ritchie says:

It's not about Apple, Microsoft, or Intel, it's about users who can't sync their iPhones and hopefully all three companies are looking into it and trying to figure out what they can do to help those users.
Chipset soft update, Windows update, iTunes update -- all three? -- whatever gets the fix done, right?

Eeveevolve says:

I had the problem, till I dusted off my old PCI USB card. Then no problem.
Using the USB on the motherboard, it would get halfway through the sync and just stall and eat 100% of my CPU with a IRQ something...

bugs says:

99.99% its itunes, the same way itunes on my xp box when iphone 3g came out would bsod windows, yet vista was fine. then a month later itunes updated fix.
this is 99% the crappy usb driver itunes has.

Andrew says:

Lets settle this pros and cons of mac and windows.
Windows pros: used most around the world about 90% i would guess. Much much more applications are available. Can be installed on any computer and lots of tweaking and development can be done.
Windows cons: attacked more by hackers. Since u can tweak a lot u may tweak something wrong and makes app crash, not because its MS fault. ( the only reason they get viruses is because think about it who are hackers gonna attack 10% of computers or 90% of computer? Pretty simple if u use your brain also it depends on the consumer on how they use their computer and webites and downloads.)
Mac Pros: simple user interface anyyone can use. Not cluttered with bloatware. Good support from apple. Not attacked as much as windows
Mac Cons: personally its hard for me to use it since its simple interface sorta degrades me. Idk its hard to explain. Developers find it hard to make applications on it, not like windows who makes it easier. Not nearly as many apps available. Unable to be installed on other computers. Not customizable with ram and memory.(at least i think u cant.) i know all you apple fa boys are gonna reply and say why would u want to install it on a crappy computer like alienware or sony vaio. And its because apple computers dont offer the customization u can with windows based computers)
reply back with constructive criticism not fanboy bullshit from both sides. The key word here is "constructive" not smart ass replies.

I've been using Windows 7 since august. iTunes is the only software that has given me problems. Maybe apple is not too friendly with pcs?
And to retards who speak of the bluescreen being common on pcs please throw yourself out of the window cause I haven't seen the bluescreen since win98.

stuffradio says:

I have no problems syncing on Windows 7.
If Microsoft is investigating, good for them... it's not their driver or chip that caused it to crash. It's Intel's fault.

Rjd says:

Rene you douche - if you're not trying to falsely implicate windows that why do you have a huge pic of Ballmer at the lead to this moronic post? Douche!

Rene Ritchie says:

Because. It's. Funny. Same reason we use silly pictures of Jobs or Schiller.

Rjd says:

Oh baloney Rene. MS has nothing whatsoever to do with this. But if you were wondering why TIPB is the least credible iPhone blog on the Internet this moronic post of yours is an excellent example.

Draino says:

Can't we all just along.

Kaiks says:

@Rjd
Can you tell me more credible iPhone blog sites?
I think Rene and team do a decent job even though some stories are biased or have little relevance to iPhone.

Rene Ritchie says:

@RJD, your feedback is welcome and appreciated, however it would be nice if we could discuss things without personal attacks or rudeness :)

Before iPods existed I had a Sony Net Walkman. I thought nothing could be worse than Sony's truly awful SonicStage software.
Recently got an iPhone, which is great, but find iTunes is bringing back the great hardware, rubbish software thoughts of my Sony experience.
I got here as considering a new PC with, you guessed it, P55 Express chipset...

ThisBrian says:

I don't know how iTunes works on the PC but it works just fine on the Mac. Just select what you want and it syncs, but I forgot everything is easier on the Mac. Oh I paid extra for something that works right.

Andrew says:

@brian sorry you paid extra for windows. Shouldve done research lol

Rjd says:

@kaik: frankly just about every other iPhone blog out there. And I 6 bookmarked. So defintely all of those.
@Rene: rude is constantly defaming other comapanies products when you rarely have a clue what you're talking about. And it's not like it's an accident at this point. This "feedback" as you call it has been provided as naseum. You are simply not an honest, credible broker about technology at this point. If your blog wasn't such a gnat on the butt of the Internet MS probably would haved sued you by now.

Elese says:

wow, MS fanboys are panicking in those comments. How can MS's image be ruined? oh no lol
yes yes it has nothing to do with Windows, its still funny how the koolaid kicks in and activates defence mode lol

Fail trolls/fanboys are fail

ThisBrian says:

@Rjd what did Rene say bad about MS, unless I missed something it looks like he was just informing people and maybe giving a solution to fix it. You must roll with RON JEREMY, it's sound like you have some of the same issue.
@Andrew sorry you can't read the article is about something that doesn't work right on the PC you must have thought you selected a different blog. Hit the back button dude!!

you must be completely cluelessmto say that. Windows > MAC for 10s of reasons but above all because 99% of the software coming out works in windows and perhaps 1% of mac.
In windows you can do EVERYTHING. In mac you are trying to figure how to make everything work like windows and you cant. So here's is an interesting article about macs:
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=macs_cant

Rene Ritchie says:

Okay folks, these comments are for people with the above problem, please try to stay on topic, let us know if you have the problem and what, if any, fixes have worked for you.
If we have to, we'll moderate them clean, but I'd rather trust everyone to try and be helpful first.
Thanks!

Rjd says:

95% plus of the world uses windows for a reason. It's better. And no amount of ignorant posts by apple fan boyz who don't grok how to use real grown up computers, or immature Photoshop pics of MS is going to change that. Why not just stick to promoting iPhone rather than continue to make fools of yourselves? Just a thought.

icebike says:

The “error 0xE8000065″ is not new, its been occurring on and off for over a year.
It seems to occur any time there is a dodgy connection or the USB host controller does not service the bus fast enough for the iPhone. The phone does not do enough re-trys and just assumes the bus is dead, and aborts what ever was in process.
Some chipsets will take longer than others to respond to bus requests than others. And some people have high demand devices on the same host controller as the phone.
The fact that this only seems to affect certain chipsets suggests its the Driver itself. (The Apple Mobile Device Driver). I'm not convinced this is a Windows 7 problem, as googling will reveal this problem has been going on for quite some time. (Remember the problems when an HP printer shared the same host adaptor back in release 2.0?).
The Apple USB driver the same driver that has had compatibility issues for years. Apple has had problems with this driver since at least 2006. They acquired this driver from some fairly early unix driver, and have tried to patch it into compliance ever since.
Most devices just use generic drivers provided by the OS manufacturer. But Apple can't do this because they rely on this driver to enforce their rules that only itunes can write to the iPhone.

This, to me, seems to be somewhat of an attack on MS. I always read iPhone blog, but it does seem to hate on anything iPhone, at least the things written by Rene. None of the other SMExperts sites are as BIASED as Rene when it comes to a non-phone product.
Sure, I could live with iPhone bias, because I am on an iPhone site. But I didn't come here for pro-Mac OSX (or, more specifically, non-apple bashing). If I had, I would have gone to Macrumors.
Honestly, the only time I dislike visiting this site is when I find that the article was written by Rene. I enjoy Jeremy's and Deiter's articles so much more.
On topic though, I do not think this problem is MS caused. It is most likely an Intel/Apple problem. Apple likely broke something with its back'n forth with Palm :(

icebike says:

@nihouma:

I always read iPhone blog, but it does seem to hate on anything iPhone, at least the things written by Rene.

You sure you meant to say that?

Rjd says:

@mike: first of all I am north of 50 yrs old and have been using computers longer than most of you apple children have been alive. That includes linux, dos, win, os2, and mac. And me and 95% of computer users agree - win is best. For a myriad of reasons.
As for Rene, you have seriously got to be THE most Immature blog "journalist" I have ever read. I hope they don't actually pay you. That would be a crime. They could get a tween to do it for free.

Derrick says:

I am extremely shocked and disappointed at the amount of immature posts on this blog. What used to be a semi-professional blog that shared current information about the iPhone has devolved into a juvenile, moronic slurfest of insults for those that support one OS over another. Can we clean up our language and posts, please? Let's act like mature human beings.

this article is f*cking dumb says:

Seriously, this was old news already and Engadget got blasted by its readers when they spun this story exactly how TiPB did, by saying its microsofts fault when its clearly an issue with INTEL DRIVERS
READ THIS AGAIN
INTEL DRIVERS ARE CAUSING THE ISSUES
So, i hope you read that and now we can move on to something that is written with at least ENC1101 caliber skill.

ML says:

I got this error in Vista 64 after a few days of syncing successfully on my new P55 build using the Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P. It is definitely something with the P55 chipset. I am getting the same error in Windows 7 Professional. My iPhone will semi-brick and I end up restoring my iPhone on an old Vista 32 Ultimate machine, with which the device syncs flawlessly. I've tried reinstalling the chipset driver and rebuilding the iTunes library with the same result. I'm not sure if the fix will be with iTunes or with new chipset drivers. However, from my perspective, it doesn't look like an issue with the OS. Please let me know if you have any other suggestions.

icebike says:

@ML
Its not the chipset driver, its the USB drivers, specifically usb host controller.
Some users report better compatibility by NOT using the intel host controller that windows chooses automatically.
Try switching the controller for the port you sync with to the Windows standard drivers.
Open device manager
Plug in the phone, but kill off iTunes if it launches
Check each USB host controller till you find the one used by the iPhone. (Double click each host controller, and check the Advanced tab, looking for the one having the Apple Mobile Device USB driver listed).
When you find it, step to the Driver tab, (unplug iphone)
Click Update Driver / Browse my computer
Then click Let me pick from List
Select the Standard Enhanced driver, not the intel one.
Select Next etc etc.
Nice thin about this is since Microsoft moved USB drivers out of kernal space you can do this without a reboot.
Then re-plug iPhone, and see if it syncs better (or at all). Undo above if no help.
This forces the use of Microsoft Drivers instead of Intel drivers, and may prove more reliable.

Bent24 says:

@ Rjd
didn't read if you were replied to, but I have to anyway regardless. You ask "why is it MS responsibility to fix this issue?" The truth is it isn't but it's called customer service and if you let that die you will slowly give your business. It would benefit everyone involved to get cracking. You talking about partnerships that could be soured intel, Microsoft, apple, USB. Anyone in that list will not want a bad mark because they pointed the finger at someone and walked away. It's really common sense.

Barracuda says:

I remember something on my Blackberry about this same thing! Seems MS initiates a "sleep mode" when the USB is not being used, this is to conserve CPU and battery on Notebooks/netbooks
let me see if I remember correctly
open power options
"change settings" on whatever option you use
then open "change advanced settings"
scroll to USB Power settings, expand.
Make sure "Selective Suspend" is DISABLED!
That should do it! I hope!

Barracuda says:

The above post got wrapped! It was broken up into steps! Sorry!

icebike says:

@Bent24:

“why is it MS responsibility to fix this issue?” The truth is it isn’t but it’s called customer service

Why wouldn't that apply to APPLE?
Its THEIR drivers that are crashing, not Microsoft's.
Unless Apple turns over the source code of their driver How is Microsoft or Intel going to fix anything?
You know how protective of their code Apple is!

RJD says:

@Brent24: The first thing you need to understand if you read this blog is they don't understand much at all about software or hardware. It's a fanboy site, and that's about it.
The second thing you need to understand is that they take that ignorance and look for every way they can to make unfactual comments about any Apple competitor.
Now hear me clearly: MS does not write the driver that Itunes uses to synch an ipod, an iphone, or any ithing. You only THINK they do because of a combination of BS and ignorance from reading this blog and assuming they are posting in a fact based world. They aren't. And until they get rid of certain writers you should take any "information" that is posted here with a huge grain of salt.

Piper says:

All this childish banter is not helpful. What we need is a workaround in the short term & then a fix in the long term. I could care less who's fault it is, I'm just interested in the fix. I'm about to buy a new PC & don't need problems syncing my iPhone.

The67beast says:

100% off subject but is it just me or do they new windows 7 commercials basically say that they just stole all their ideas from others and are making money from it. Not really sure I would advertise.... I thought it up, Microsoft made it... Hmmm......

ThisBrian says:

MS has some good ideas, did you see the first Apple store in Scottsdale that opened on 10/22/09 they clapped hands, cheered plus gave high fives? Sorry my bad it was the new MS Store, it was confusing, even the tables, floor and walls looked the same? Wow the ideas they come up with.

ThisBrian says:

Intel is reportedly investigating a compatibility issue involving the iPhone and certain chipsets, according to CNET News. A number of users have reported that iTunes 9 for Windows is able to recognize the iPhone, however the device cannot sync with certain machines utilizing Intel's P55 chipset and motherboards from certain manufacturers.
"Our leading theory is a BIOS or system configuration issue, but we are still investigating," Intel said.
The company's P55 Express chipset works with processors in the Core i7-800 and Core i5-700 families. Most problems have also involved 64-bit Windows 7, although the incompatibility has not been confirmed to involve the particular operating system.

Rjd says:

@Brian: you wrote a lot of fancy words that boil down to two things; the HARDWARE Manufacturers need to write compatible drivers. Either apple or intel. MS is a software company. Although MS has taken on the responsibility for many lazy hardware vendors in its time it is not their responsibility to do so.
Bottom line is that Apple needs to get off their butt and write better drivers that actually work with the software their customers use. I can't see a single thing MS can do about it given that Apple's code is locked down. And even if it weren't why should MS spend money to make an Apple product compatible? 95% of the world uses windows. Maybe those same folks should buy a Zune if Apple doesn't care enough to write a decent driver.

ThisBrian says:

Sorry I didn't write that, it was a article I found. I just knew there was a big wrestling match in this blog so thought it might clear a little up.
I'm no fancy word writter.
