Could the long-rumored cameras being added to the iPod touch, iPod nano, and even iPod classic have hit a snag, leading to a delay that might effect Apple's "It's only rock and roll but we like it" special music event planned for Wednesday?

AppleInsider, citing a "person with a strong track record in predicting Apple's upcoming product launches" (PWASTRIPAUPL), is rumoring just that:

Apple has finished their investigation in the case of the exploding iPhones/Pods and the results are not shocking - the battery malfunction theory has been rejected. It was first rumored that defective batteries were more than likely the cause of the devices going boom but as it turns out, excess force was the reason - according to Apple.

The iPod touch, iPod nano, and now it sounds like the hard-drive based iPod classic are all set to receive cameras, presumably at Apple's September 9 music event. We've heard rumors of the iPod touch before, of course, and even the iPod nano, but the iPod classic as well?

That's what Digitimes (via MacRumors) is reporting:

Numerous press reports are claiming that iPhones and iPods are "exploding" -- well, three isolated devices, at least so far. Apple is said to be investigating these reports and have no answers as of now.

Looks like Wednesday, September 9 might just be this year's date for Apple's annual iPod and iTunes event, where it's widely expected we'll see the third generation iPod touch (with video camera?), iTunes 9 (with Blu-Ray and "social" integration?), as well as other refreshes to Apple's music-themed lineup.

ORIGINAL: New images have surfaced purported to be Apple's third generation iPod touch, showing a top, center mounted camera for the presumed-to-be-announced in September product revision.

To catch up, we've heard the new iPod touch would have a camera and mic, and potentially come in at 16GB/32GB/64GB for $199/$299/$399. Now, as to the picture above...

Real? Fake? Really fake? There are certain constants in this Apple 'verse, including spec and image leaks prior to, and in anticipation of, any new Apple event. So either way, we're right on schedule for the rumored September 8th iPod, iTunes, and Music show!
