How to Jailbreak iOS 4.1 via limera1n [Jailbreak]

Wondering how to Jailbreak your iOS 4.1 iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad? limera1n was updated to support Mac today and after testing, it's a pretty painless process. Pretty much what we've come to expect from Geohot. So here's your TiPb-style walkthrough. You PC users should be able to follow along relatively easily as well since both jailbreaks are pretty much identical in nature.  We've also got tutorials on how to jailbreak iOS 4.1 withgreenpois0n as well as how to jailbreak iOS 4.1 with PwnageTool 4.1 as well.  So feel free to pick your pois0n, er... ra1n.

But as usual, here's the standard disclaimer first:

If you are at all hesitant about jailbreaking or don't consider yourself an intermediate to advanced user, we recommend you pass this up.  TiPb does not accept any responsibility for broken iOS devices (even though we'll be happy to try and help if you run into any problems along the way).  If you're alright with all this, click on for a written, as well as a video walkthrough!

  • Visit and download the Mac version (or the PC version if that applies to you)
  • Plug in your iOS device (compatible versions: iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 3rd and 4th generations, and iPad on iOS 3.2.2)
  • Launch limera1n and simply click Make it ra1n
  • limera1n will prompt you and walk you through putting your phone in DFU mode
  • once in DFU mode, limera1n will jailbreak and reboot your device
  • Once your reboot is done (you may have to turn your phone back on, it happened with one of mine) - simply click the limera1n icon and install Cydia.

Congrats! You're now jailbroken on iOS 4.1!  If you guys have any questions, concerns, or just want to share cool tips and tricks with the rest of us, check out the TiPb Jailbreak Forums.  Happy jailbreaking!

Muero says:

You should note that iOS 4.1 does not apply to the iPad, but limera1n can jailbreak iPads up to and including 3.2.2.

Ken says:

Ok so can someone clarify what the advantages of this latest jailbreak are? I am currently running iOS 4.1 on my iP4.
Hotspot and facetime via 3G are part of it right?

Victor says:

@Ken plus a number of other fantastic things like free tethering, 3g unrestricter (part of the facetime over 3g but its also nice to watch youtube and other things on 3g at full quality). Plus it has some nice OS modifications like infinifolders.
Ps this was also really easy on bootcamp a few days ago...

Victor says:

lockcalendar (or other lock screen widget things) is really nice

Stephxieh says:

Mine hasn't yet successfully installed Cydia, Cursing myself for getting too excited and updating to 4.1 now that there's a jailbreak! I want my stuff back :( I'm going to stubbornly keep on trying!

taroliw says:

Geohot may be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but i frankly don't trust him. The diva drama BS he pulls... Then "don't expect Mac version ever"... Followed by a mac version days later. What a flaky mess!
I shall wait for dev team proper to take it better-tested, methodical approach. One thing missing from this is that there was mention of using TU to preserve basecode for unlock on Windows version. Is this also possible on Mac release?

Jorah says:

Does this also unlock the phone?

Charles says:

Bill, I just used Tiny Umbrella to upgrade my iphone 4 from 4.0.1 to 4.1 while preserving my baseband firmware. I then used limera1n to jailbreak with no issues. My baseband can still be unlocked which is always a goal form me for resale purposes. All of this was done on my Mac. Just make sure you use Tiny Umbrella 4.1.4 or 4.1.5. 4.1.6 WONT WORK!!!

Charles says:

Gorb, it does not. You'll have to use Ultrasnow for that and that will depend on what iphone you have and what baseband you are running.

mark paul says:

does this work on an iphone 3g running with ios 4.1?

anto says:

lol, why dont u guys just try pwnage tool method , that even can do it for 4.2 beta already. Check out !

Winter says:

I told my gadrnmother how you helped. She said, "bake them a cake!"

Luke1989 says:

Is it cool to uninstall limera1n once jailbroken?

MacFan says:

that's one full dock, what are all your awesome apps?

Joe says:

What's the best tool for a 3G running 4.1? I tried PwnageTool, but it didn't allow me to make any call or access 3G. Maybe I did something wrong?

Buffdaddydeluxe says:

Greenpois0n is a much better jailbreak. I jailbroke with limera1n and had it for 4 days until greenpois0n was released. Limera1n was buggy as hell!! No bugs with greenpoos0n and my i4 runs smoother too. And Cydia is faster and has no errors as opposed to limera1n garbage!!

websyndicate says:

@Buffdaddydeluxe No problems with Limera1n here and it the only mac version only.

Martin says:

I've never jailbroken my iPhone, and it all sounds positive here, but what are the drawbacks if any?

jailbroke says:

so I'm jailbroken on 4.0.1.....question is, what is the procedure to jailbreak with limera1in?
Do i have to restore to factory? And if I losing everything I've put on the phone? From Cydia and Rock apps to themes?
Thanks in advance

blake says:

why can i not upgrade to 4.1? itunes say it cannot connect with the server try again later! ive been trying for 2days? latest version of itunes and still no go....

Lithium says:

I upgraded to iOS4 when it first came out but it was unuseable, so downgraded to 3.1.3. Just wondering if anyone has had any personal experience with an iPhone 3G on 4.1, jailbroken with either Greenpois0n or Limera1n?

Grant says:

Which baseband do you need in order to unlock when running 4.1?

Mike says:

We also are offering a Solar Key Chain charger that fits most cell phones, PDA's and cameras.
Please, THINK GREEN and help save our planet.
After all, it's the only we've go

woody88 says:

Mike, you are a effing tool

jesse says:

lol Bill. But yeah I've been waiting for a while to jailbreak the iphone4. I was with verizon for years until I finally got my first iphone couple weeks ago. I have however jailbroken my ipod touch 3 and I used blackra1n on the 3.1.2 software. That worked great for months, but when I jailbroke again on 3.1.3 os, the ipod slowly started to fall apart (wifi stopped working, then the touch was unresponsive). From all the sources I've read, everyone seems to have more trust in dev team than geohot. I really don't have the patience anymore though lol do you guys think limera1n mac would be cool to try out?

Mike says:

disregard that, I blow cockss

Crunch says:

@CHARLES: Nonsense. TinyUmbrella 4.1.6 DOES work when it comes to upgrading your iOS 4.01 to 4.1. I just did exactly that last night.
Love the "new" Game Center...:)

Crunch says:

I can't believe that every last text, missed call, and setting was preserved!
EVERYONE: Make sure you BACK UP your iPhone 4 BEFORE doing this. Sync'ing is good. Fully backing up is better! ;)
Have fun!

BruTaL says:

Limera1n worked perfectly well with no problems at all and was very easy to jailbreak. Thanks
I couldn't agree more with Crunch, iTunes had backed up my 3GS while last syncing and when I restored that on my new iPhone 4....exactly the same, to the slightest detail that even my last note that I had opened was the same.
Thanks geo, tipb, and everyone on this site

Aaron says:

I used Limera1n to jailbreak my 3GS and it worked perfectly. I tried using it on my 3G and it gets stuck at "in DFU mode...wait"
I have tried it a few times and keep getting stuck in the same place. I'm able to restore in iTunes, but really need phone jailbroken.
Is there any trick I'm not aware of? Does ANYONE have some good advice for me???

Me says:

PwntageTool link in the article doesn't work. Is this the best option to unlock as I have Windows (and no Mac)

Jesse says:

I have a 3Gs on 4.1 on 05.14.02 firmware. Was able to jailbreak it fine using limera1n, but wanted to unlock it to use on T mobile, anybody know if this can be done yet and how? Tried using pwnagetool a few weeks ago but wouldn't work (I'm guessing because of the baseband or whatever, not much of a hacker I'm afraid). Let me know if anyone has any tips.

Jkb114 says:

I have an ipod touch version v.o.2 (8A400) and it says its done but i cant find the icon on my ipod help!!!!!!!11

CristianTM says:

I'm new on this world. Here is my question: I've an unlocked Iphone4. But it was bought unlocked, I've bought it on UK. I use it on Brazil. I need to care about this when choosing my jjb method or any of them will work?

nilesh desai says:

can limera1n can also jailbreak my ipod touch3g as my version is 3.1.2

Lucas says:

Hey i made a mistake and unplug during the process would this affect my phone and it says in DFU mode wait, how long do that suppose to last
