Mac

Everything you need to know about using Apple's Mac personal computer and it's operating system, OS X Mountain Lion, with your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad

Apple currently makes both portable and desktop versions of the Mac. For portables, there's the ultra-light MacBook Air line, and the ultra-powerful MacBook Pro line. For desktops, there's entry-level Mac mini, workstation-level Mac Pro, and the all-in-one iMac. Running on all of them is OS X, and its current version, Mountain Lion (10.8).

Updated: Multi-Touch to Go from iPhone to Mouse?

UPDATE: Looks like Engadget managed to score the mouse and keyboard diagrams from the FCC filings before Apple had them yanked. They look the same from what little outline is shown, though the new keyboard is a tad smaller.

Is Apple on the verge of releasing a new, multi-touch enabled mouse for their Mac line that harnesses the technology debuted in the iPhone? That's what AppleInsider is claiming.

The Competition: RIM to Release BlackBerry Desktop Manager... for Mac?!

Via CrackBerry.com:

RIM has officially announced that BlackBerry Desktop Manager software for MAC will be available this September. THANK YOU RIM. You can visit blackberry.com/mac to sign up for updates and learn more or visit the Inside BlackBerry blog to see a few screen captures of it in action.

Yeah. Good luck with that. Any guesses how long that lasts before Apple releases a patch to disable BlackBerry sync?

(Kidding! Joking! Don't panic, Kev! We're happy for you -- now you're at least half-way towards restoring your childlike sense of wonder...)

Tweetie for Mac Shows Where iPhone Twitter is Headed?

We generally don't cover Mac or Windows news on the site, even though most people who have an iPhone will at some point plug it into a laptop or desktop. And we almost never cover software that isn't directly involved with that plug in connection. Why the exception? Tweetie for Mac began as Tweetie for iPhone, one of the most popular and robust iPhone Twitter clients in the App Store, and as much as the iPhone version set the foundation for Tweetie for Mac, it looks like Tweetie for Mac rebuilt that foundation for the next iPhone release.

How To: Re-Enable Jailbreak/Unlock for Mac OS X 10.5.6

So you say you updated to the latest Mac OS X 10.5.6 and wanted to jailbreak or unlock. Well the update severely hindered your ability to do that. The Dev-Team says it is a simple kernel bug and not a specific countermeasure by Apple, never the less, there is still a work around.

It's a pretty straight forward fix actually, first you need to have administrator privileges. Then download the script file . Got it? Good, now continue on for the detailed instructions after the break!

Apple Posts 3rd Quarter Results: Hello Halo Effect?

We told you that today's earnings would be thin on iPhone details and that is definitely the case. Apple's just posted their 3rd quarter results and the results are: dizzang!

Dig the full results (minus the legal speak) after the break. Here's the short version: a record number of Macs were sold, just shy of 2.5 million, which works out to about 41% growth year over year, 43% revenue growth. That's ALottaMacs, friends, and it helped Apple hit a quarterly profit of over a billion dollars on $7.46 billion in revenue -- both significant increases over the same quarter last year. Margins were down a hair, but whatev -- Apple's selling Macs, dig?

We can't wait to see what the financial results are for iPhone sales (they'll come next quarter), but we have a sneaking suspicion that numbers like these mean that the just-dandy sales for iPhones 2 quarters ago have translated into quite a few people getting interested in replacing a PC with a Mac. As Mac-users ourselves, we welcome you folks to the fold. Are you a recent switcher? Was it the Halo effect? Is your new iPhone 3G spotting a shiny halo that has you thinking Mac for your next purchase?
