Retina iPad mini and iPad Air event: What we didn't get

Now that the iPad event has wrapped up, it's time to take stock of what we got and what expectations have been left unfulfilled. Before we dive in, it's fair to note that they announced a lot - a new MacBook Pro, the iPad Air, Retina iPad mini, and lots of extras on products that have already been announced, like the launch of OS X Mavericks and the new Mac Pro's pricetag. On the whole, it's been a solid day for news, and there's really little reason to complain about anything. We're still going to find things to nitpick about, though.

Apple 2013 iPad & Mac event preview

We're only hours away from Apple's 2013 iPad and Mac event, and just like the invitation says, there's a lot left to cover. Last year we got the improved iPad 4, all new iPad mini, redesigned iMac, and the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro. This year we're looking forward to a thinner, lighter iPad 4, Retina iPad mini 2, the all new Mac Pro, Haswell chipset-based MacBook Pro bumps, and... well, that's the real question, isn't it?

Tim Cook will come out and talk Apple Retail and Apple core values. Phil Schiller will show off new iOS and Mac hardware. Craig Federighi will demonstrate new features. Eddy Cue will take us to the iClouds. Jony Ive and Dan Riccio will show up in the videos. But what will they be talking about?

Want amazing new performance out of your old Mac Pro? Here's how

Turbocharging the Mac Pro with SSDs, here's how

Apple's new Mac Pro has some Mac users buzzing: the tiny machine appears to be crazy fast, and it's a total redesign of the system - replacing the giant aluminum box of yore with a tiny little black cylinder. But should you replace your Mac Pro with the new one? If you want to get as much bang for your buck, upgrade your aluminum Mac Pro with an Solid State Drive (SSD).

There are different options available for Mac Pro-compatible SSDs, and we're going to look at two of them here: a SATA-based SSD and a PCIe-based SSD. The bottom line is that you're going to see a huge increase in speed either way; it's just a question of what your budget will allow.

Apple offers graphics replacement program for some 2011-2012 iMacs

There's nothing more stressful for parents or students than the annual back-to-school insanity that prefaces the actual return to educational institutions across the land. From kindergarten to grade school to high school to college, from clothes to supplies to books to gadgets, there's so much to get done and so little time to do it. We feel your pain. It's our pain too. And while we can't help you with all of it, we can absolutely help you with the gadget part. Whether you're a parent shopping for your child, or a student trying to decide what to get yourself, here's every iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Mac made by Apple, and our buyer's guide for each and every one!

Important note: Apple will almost certainly release new iPhones, iPods, iPads, and Macs (with the exception of the Air) this fall. If you have to buy now, now, now, ignore that and get whatever's best today. If you can wait, however, you'll typically pay the same amount for better technology come September/October.
