More than tagging, what I'd love from Instagram is sharing

Yesterday Instagram added tagging to their service, so you can identify friends who are in your photos. Facebook and even Google+ have had this for a while, and it's fine. What I really want, however, is in-network sharing. The ability to share great Instagrams on Instagram.

On Twitter, if a friend tweets something amazing, I can re-tweet on Twitter, and the people who follow me can discover it. On Google+, if a friend posts something amazing, I can share it on G+, and the people who follow me can likewise discover it. Many other social services have similar features. Friends retweeting or sharing within the network is how we all find new and interesting people to add within those networks. It's the easiest, simplest way to grow.

On Instagram, I can Like amazing photos, but I can't share them with my friends on Instagram. If @safesolvent hits "The Stance" on top of the most spectacular cliff imaginable, or @davidlundbladphotography captures the perfect fashion candid, I have no ability to let anyone else on Instagram experience it with me -- I have to use the built-in feature to share to Facebook or Twitter, or manually share to G+ or other services.

In-network sharing is such a common social feature that Instagram certainly must have considered it, and must have gotten the request for it multiple times. Their vision for the service may not align with sharing, or they may not yet be ready to introduce it the way they want to.

Still, it's something I'd love to see, and sooner rather than later. There's so much amazing work on Instagram, it's a shame it can't be shared on Instagram. Let me know what you think, either in the comments below or on Instagram

More than tagging, what I'd love from Instagram is in-network sharing

I am right there with you. That, along with the just added tagging, are such social network staples, that (prior to yesterday) when I tried to do just that, I was shaking my head and wondering why the feature was so buried I couldn't find them. Later, searching, finding they aren't supported.

I disagree. Sharing is ruining the Facebook experience right now. Adding sharing to Instagram would be the end of me using the service, as I'm getting close to doing with Facebook.

You should be able to turn off re-shares, and on a per-account basis if you really want to. Some people, I'd love to see their recommendations.

It could even be broken out into a separate tab.

really? i don't know if the problem is sharing. the problem is i don't care about what most people on facebook have to say except a few. i only keep facebook so people can find me in an emergency. That's why i like twitter. Kinda sad but its me talking not the other guy. I'm ok with sharing but however they do it it should force people to your instagram page, and you should be the only one getting credit.

Being that most of my Instagram friends have "locked down" accounts (need to request permission to follow), I doubt sharing would work for my group ... if done like in Twitter (since you can't retweet a private account's tweet)

I am disappointed that Instagram does not have this feature. It's a feature that I thought it had initially, like Tumblr, and that was the reason I started using it: to share my friends great photos! Since I found out this could not be done, I have almost stopped using it all together. If they were to introduce this feature, I would strongly consider using Instagram again

While I think this would be great for helping people increase their followership, I think the major downfall would be people abusing the feature by "regramming" multiple posts in a row, killing your timeline.

Like everything else...there's an app for that. I use InstaRepost & it works just fine. It has all the functions of IG plus you can easily repost something you liked on your TL

Some people I followed spammed too many photos I just gave up on the whole thing. A filter to adjust the amount of people's photos in my stream would bring me back.

@ Rene Ritchie, you know there is the Following tab (next to News) within the Instagram app. It displays pictures you friends have liked or people they are starting to follow. Isn't this basically what you're asking for???
