Dynamic affordance: Can the iOS 8 interface be made smarter?

Depending on who you are and how you feel, iOS 7 either took the training wheels off to fully embrace digital design, or it removed so much interface as to crush usability. Both are true. iOS is used by a wide range of people, from the digital and mobile immigrant — those who grew up reading newspapers or using PCs — to the digital and mobile native — those who were born to iPhone and iPad. One, single, static default choice can never properly meet the needs of everyone across that range. But what if iOS 8 could make affordance and accessibility dynamic?

Pixelmator previews impressive advanced image repair tool

An upcoming update to Mac photo editing app Pixelmator will include a rather impressive repair tool. With it, you’ll be able to remove entire objects simply by painting on them and letting the software do the rest. The same tool will be able to remove blemishes and dust with ease. A similar feature has existed in Adobe Photoshop for several years, but Pixelmator is generally much more user friendly and always significantly more affordable.

FarmVille 2: Country Escape is made for mobile, requires no friends

Following a fairly successful soft launch in Canada, Zynga’s FarmVille 2: Country Escape launches globally today on iOS and Android. The Facebook version has been out since 2012, though the new mobile version won’t require a social plug-in to bug your friends for resources. You can also play offline, which is a nice change of pace from these types of games. The usual freemium city-building tropes are here: gather resources, plant new crops, wait on timers, or speed them up through in-app purchases, and co-operate with friends.

Sync your photos across all your devices with Eyefi Cloud

Eyefi has introduced a new cloud service to complement their Wi-Fi-enabled SD memory cards for photographers. Eyefi Cloud provides a polished dedicated interface through new Android and iOS apps for users to view their photos at full resolution, add tags, organize into collections, and sync collections with other devices. The new service will run you $49 for a year of unlimited uploads, plus a free three months when you first download the app. Unfortunately the new app only plays nice with the Eyefi Mobi card for direct camera-to-phone downloads. Anyone with an older card will have to stick with Eyefi’s existing app.

Apple allegedly teaming up with Shazam for song-identification feature in iOS 8

Come iOS 8, you might soon be able to ask your iPhone what song is playing and get an answer. Apple is reportedly prepping an update to Siri that will enable music identification. Yahoo really really wants to be the default search engine for iPhones and iPads

Fire up Safari on your iPhone or iPad today and you'll most likely find Google as the default search engine — but if Yahoo has their way that might change. Users have the option to change from Google to other search providers such as Bing or Yahoo, but Google's had the default spot locked down for some time thanks to the handsome sum they've been paying Apple for the privilege. But Microsoft's Bing is the default search used in Siri, so count that as a win for Redmond. Yahoo isn't too happy that Google holds the crown jewel default search in Safari, and they're apparently aiming to convince Apple to change that.
