Official Sony PlayStation 4 second screen app coming to iPhone and iPad

Official Sony PlayStation 4 second screen app coming to iPhone and iPadSony held a press conference yesterday to announce its upcoming next generation PlayStation 4 console. One of the additional things that Sony also announced was a new app that would allow an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to be used as a second screen device with the PS4 console.

A new application from SCE called “PlayStation®App” will enable iPhone, iPad, and Android based smartphones and tablets to become second screens. Once installed on these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices.

The possibility for second screen usage is pretty much endless and it is great to see Sony preparing to offer this for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users. Microsoft already offers a second screen app for its Xbox 360 called SmartGlass that allows users to remotely control the gaming console, view related content, type out messages, and otherwise complement everything you'd normally just do with the hardware controller. Hopefully with the PlayStation 4 and the new Xbox, we will see a lot more uses for second screen apps on the iPhone and iPad.

Mike Bullivant says:

Anyone else feel a fruit based bias? No mention of android in the title and only once in the article. Odd when it is the most popular platform.

powerbyte#AC says:

Ummm...this is iMore...of course it's about apple...and as you say "fruit" biased...

I'll give you a few minutes to realize what web site you're on before I shake my head at you.

Bluecanary says:

You realize what website you're on, right? And there's a difference between most popular and most purchased.

richard_rsp says:

Mike Bullivant, this is an Apple related site (iMore), therefore this article is regarding Apple products. The Android site equivilant is located here: http://www.androidcentral.com/sony-promises-android-second-screen-app-pl...

Hail Caesar says:

Awesome, I thought Sony did an excellent job at their conference. They introduced great games and services, also they discussed the power of their upcoming hardware. I am really excited about them again, now I have to wait and see what the Xbox brand is cooking up. Wii U is pretty much DOA at this point.

Shameer Mulji says:

Would've been nice if Sony actually showed the actual hardware and gave a price & release date. And I'm not being sarcastic.
